Bung to Armizan: Sabah BN won't wait for 'green light' from others

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) is ready to face Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, stressing that it does not rely on "green lights" from others to make political decisions.
Sabah BN chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said the coalition welcomed healthy democratic competition and would only engage in political cooperation based on sincerity and mutual respect.
"We do not wait for signals from any party to determine our position or course of action.
"More importantly, this issue must be viewed in the broader context of political legitimacy, strategic autonomy, and sincerity in cooperation.
"BN is not against cooperation. But we do not want partnerships that merely serve to boost numbers or lend legitimacy to a fragile rule," said Bung, who is also the Sabah Umno liaison committee chairman, in a statement.
The Lamag assemblyman was responding to a statement by GRS deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who said yesterday that the Sabah-based coalition should face BN in the coming state polls.
The domestic trade and cost of living minister had said that a contest between the two coalitions would allow the people to decide who they wanted to govern the state.
Bung added that if GRS was indeed ready to compete democratically, Sabah BN welcomed the challenge.
"In a democracy, contests are not to be feared.
"They present opportunities to determine who truly has the people's trust, based on real strength, not borrowed support or shortcuts."
He stressed that Sabah BN would not shape its political direction based on the statements of others, and that past experience had made the coalition wary of entering political alliances lightly.
"Cooperation without sincerity is like building a house on mud. It may stand briefly but will collapse under pressure. We have learned our lesson.
"The people have also witnessed how alliances without sincerity result in weak, inconsistent, and unconvincing governments.
"In politics, legitimacy is not defined by seat numbers alone, but by the people's trust in the sincerity of one's struggle."

He said this reflects GRS' stance, but any formal decision on political cooperation must be made by the coalition's Supreme Council. Advertisement Hajiji said this after officiating Sulaman Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah's (Gagasan Rakyat) annual conference here on Sunday. Hajiji also agreed with GRS Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who supported the idea of GRS going head-to-head with Barisan Nasional (BN). He added that BN had already indicated a lack of interest in collaborating, and GRS would not force any party into cooperation. Armizan had earlier said he agreed with Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin that GRS and BN should contest separately in the election. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Pantai Manis Gagasan Rakyat backs solo run for GRS in state polls

Published on: Sunday, June 15, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 15, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: Abdul Rahim and other leaders at the party's divisional meeting. PAPAR: Nearly 1,000 delegates of Pantai Manis Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) unanimously backed a motion urging Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to contest solo in the upcoming 17th State Election. Divisional chief Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Ismail said the motion came from grassroots sentiment demanding full political autonomy and an end to collaborations with other parties, especially Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno. Advertisement He added that the division also approved a second motion endorsing the long-standing 'Sabah for Sabahans' agenda, citing decades of federal marginalisation and exploitation of state resources. While acknowledging GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's continued cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH), Abdul Rahim said the grassroots remained firm in wanting GRS to go it alone in the next state polls. He also stressed the importance of youth development within the party, calling young members the 'reserve team' and urging all divisions to prepare for the election, which could be called at any time. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS open to cooperation, but Barisan shows lack of interest, says Hajiji

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who is also Gagasan Rakyat president, officiates the party's Sulaman division annual meeting in Tuaran on Sunday. KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) never shut the door on cooperating with Barisan Nasional, but it was Barisan that first showed disinterest, claimed Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. 'I support his (Armizan's) view, but we have yet to make a final decision. This didn't come from me — it came from Barisan, who said they're not interested. We shouldn't force people if they're not interested,' he said.. He was responding to GRS deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali's recent remarks supporting a straight fight between the two coalitions in the 17th Sabah state election (PRN17), a proposal raised initially by Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. 'GRS is ready to face anyone, but the GRS supreme council must finalise any form of political cooperation,' said Hajiji, who is also the GRS chairman, after launching the Gagasan Rakyat Sulaman division's annual meeting in Tuaran on Sunday (June 15). While speculation continues over the possible dissolution of the state assembly by late July or early August, Hajiji, who is also president of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), said no date has been fixed — though he hinted an announcement may come after the Gagasan Rakyat general assembly at the end of July. He also called on Gagasan Rakyat and GRS members to stay united and strengthen party machinery in preparation for the election. On seat negotiations, Hajiji said that while no final decisions have been made, he favours continuing the current GRS-Pakatan Harapan Plus arrangement. Hajiji, who has held the Sulaman seat since 1990, said he was confident it would remain under GRS, along with the other Tuaran constituencies of Pantai Dalit, Tamparuli and Kiulu.
