McConville was 'the difference' for Armagh
Ger Houlahan and Oisin McConville reminisced fondly on this week's GAA Social BBC gaelic games podcast about their time together in the Armagh football squad.Houlahan, who secured an All-Star in 1993 and was part of the county's Ulster Championship winning squads in 1999 and 2000, said McConville was "the difference between Armagh being an ordinary team and being an All-Ireland team"."We had some great games but just couldn't get over the line. With him around, you always got over the line," said Houlahan, who made his county debut in 1983 and remained part of the squad until 2000."I remember Joey Donnelly who was a corner-back trying frees…..John Rafferty when you [McConville] were coming into the set-up taking frees but they were never free-kick takers. "It just came so naturally to Oisin and he was ballsy enough to score the big ones. That was the difference."In a highly entertaining podcast, McConville laughed as he recalled Houlahan's attempts to console after his sending off in the Ulster Football Championship replay against Donegal in 1999."Houlie [who was on the bench] followed me just to make sure I was OK because I went straight into the changing-room. I was absolutely devastated. I was accused of elbowing Niall McCready. I actually ended up getting it rescinded on the video evidence. "I remember saying at the time 'That's us.....we're up the left now' and Houlie said 'yeah….you were our only chance'. But we actually won the game. [Diarmaid] Marsden had an absolute stormer."McConville added that he had watched the Pearse Ogs man "for 10 years with club and county"."He was an absolute wizard. His left foot was wonderful," added the current Wicklow manager."But he was so encouraging to me because he instilled confidence in me."Every single free-kick on the pitch, he's be saying 'that's your free-kick'…..no matter where it was on the pitch. He wanted me on it. I came on the panel at 18 and if you have that sort of backing, it's nice. We had great fun too."Their fun included owning a greyhound together with a couple of other Armagh squad members which raced on local tracks.Houlahan's sporting career included a soccer stint at Sligo Rovers and he revealed that then Portadown FC manager Ronnie McFall attempted to sign him at one point.

'Tyrone should always push for All-Ireland titles'
Eoin McElholm says Tyrone "should always be pushing" for All-Ireland titles but insists manager Malachy O'Rourke is keeping the team grounded ahead of Sunday's pivotal Group One game against Cavan (16:15 BST). Tyrone, Cavan, Donegal and Mayo all enter the final round of the round-robin stage locked on two points after two games. The Red Hands have been talked about as All-Ireland contenders after securing an impressive win over Ulster champions Donegal in Ballybofey, but McElholm says the players are paying no heed to outside noise."That's what Malachy's good at, keeping us grounded," said McElholm, who is fresh off being named the Under-20 Footballer of the Year after helping his county secure back-to-back All-Ireland crowns at the grade."Obviously Tyrone always should be All-Ireland contenders, just for such a good footballing county and the amount of quality in the team. "We should always be pushing for an All-Ireland and people are going to say we're all All-Ireland contenders, but Malachy has pushed us right down to Earth and says 'you're as good as your last game', so hopefully we can put up a good performance on Sunday. In between the All-Ireland Under-20 semi-final and final, McElholm featured for the Tyrone seniors in the opening round-robin win over Donegal. He did not feature in the defeat by Mayo last time out, but was introduced in Tyrone's Ulster quarter-final win over Cavan in Omagh in April. Tyrone will top the group and advance to the quarter-finals if they beat Cavan and Donegal beat Mayo on Sunday. O'Rourke's side will also finish top if they win and Donegal and Mayo play out a draw, which would knock Cavan out. Second place would earn Tyrone a home preliminary quarter-final, while third would mean an away game. "We just need to go in and boost our performance from the last day," added McElholm. "If we win, we win, but we just need a good performance from everyone and good energy from the whole team."All of this weekend's round-robin games will be played at neutral venues, with Tyrone and Cavan meeting at Brewster Park in Enniskillen, where McElholm won an Ulster Minor title with the Red Hands in 2021."The venue should be irrelevant and it's the same for every player on the pitch whether you like it or not," he said."I have good memories there, I played in an Ulster Minor final at Brewster and beat Donegal in it so personally I like Brewster. "Other players might not have good memories there but it's about coming together and getting through it."

URC Final preview: Leinster face showdown against the Bulls at Croke Park
Leinster will be looking for their first piece of silverware since 2021 when they take on South Africa's Bulls at Croke Park on Saturday. The Bulls lost to compatriots the Stormers three seasons ago and were stunned by Glasgow Warriors in the decider in Pretoria last season, a game they were heavily tipped to win. USMNT standout Michael Bradley named Red Bulls II coach
June 12 - Longtime U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley was named the head coach of MLS NEXT Pro side New York Red Bulls II on Thursday. It is the first head coaching position for Bradley, 37, who worked on his father Bob Bradley's coaching staff with the Norwegian club Stabaek from 2023-24. Bradley will replace Ibrahim Sekagya, who was promoted Wednesday to a spot as an assistant coach for the Red Bulls' first team in MLS. It is a homecoming of sorts for Michael Bradley, who began his professional career in 2004 with the MetroStars, a forerunner of the current New York Red Bulls of MLS. "I couldn't be more excited to come back to where my professional playing career began," Bradley said. "This is a dream opportunity as a young coach. I'm looking forward to working every day with this talented group of players, and I'll give everything to help them take the next step in their careers. "I'm thankful to the club for the opportunity and can't wait to get started." Bradley played with Toronto FC in MLS from 2014-23, recording 16 goals in 258 matches and earning three All-Star nods. He earned 151 caps with the U.S. men's national team from 2006-19, scoring 17 goals and participating in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. He was the U.S. Soccer Player of the Year in 2015. Bradley's first match as head coach of Red Bulls II will be on June 21 against Carolina Core FC in High Point, N.C.
