On your bike! Lime booted out of west London borough after pavement parking complaints
Hounslow council has ended its two-year association with the firm, which dominates the capital's bike hire market, and appointed two rivals in its place.
The move is thought to be the toughest response yet from a London borough to concerns about 'anti-social' parking - though there are also suggestions that the council simply opted for the most lucrative bid.
But the move also appears to highlight how councils are increasingly requiring dockless bike hire firms to meet tough standards, while seizing the opportunity to generate income - ahead of a long awaited city-wide regulatory scheme mentioned in the Government's devolution white paper.
Hounslow's decision, following a retendering process, is expected to mean that Lime will have to 'geo-fence' its bikes to prevent them being hired or parked in the borough, which includes Chiswick and Brentford.
A Lime spokesperson said: "We're disappointed by Hounslow council's decision. We're proud of our bid, which we believe offered the best overall value for Hounslow residents by focusing on quality of service, safety, and community benefit above all.
"We're also disappointed for the thousands of Hounslow residents that rely on our bikes daily to connect to other areas of London.
'Built over seven years operating in the capital, Lime's service has allowed people living in Hounslow to access all parts of the city, and cycle as far as Hackney and Lewisham in one easy journey.
'It's important for councils to prioritise seamless mobility across London for their residents when selecting operators as otherwise we risk creating a patchwork system that undermines this.
"Our data proves this. Since we launched in Hounslow in 2023, the number of Lime rides has more than doubled year-on-year, and we've seen a massive 95 per cent increase in people using our bikes to commute.
'It's clear that Hounslow residents have embraced cycling, and we're glad to have supported the council's wider cycling goals.
'We remain dedicated to working with TfL and local councils across the capital to ensure all Londoners have access to sustainable modes of transport and to build a more accessible, inclusive and greener city for everyone.'
Last November, neighbouring Brent council had threatened to evict Lime after similar complaints from residents about abandoned bikes, but struck a lucrative deal to fund the provision of 200 on-street bike parking bays.
Hounslow has appointed Forest and Voi in place of Lime, under a new contract that will begin on August 11.
The council held a competitive procurement process, 'shaped by widespread community feedback' that requested 'stronger parking compliance, faster response times to resident concerns and more tailored and affordable pricing'.
There are currently more than 250 designated e-bike parking bays across the borough and the council pledged to review its enforcement procedures 'to maintain clear pavements and discourage poor parking behaviour'.
Lime bikes have been used for more than 1.7m trips since a trial was launched by the council in 2023, with it being extended to Isleworth and Osterley due to its popularity.
The new scheme will have lower prices, including discounts for residents, low-income users and local businesses, and will use advanced technology and stricter enforcement to ensure the Forest and Voi bikes are parked in designated bays.
There will also be lighter e-bikes, including the trial of e-bikes with cargo baskets or child seats.
According to the ChiswickW4.com website, Lime's trial 'drew criticism for widespread antisocial parking, hacking incidents, and inadequate customer support'.
It added: 'Bikes were often left blocking pavements, driveways, and even junctions, prompting safety concerns from residents and councillors alike.'
Forest already operates in Brent and Hammersmith and Fulham and plans to have 1,087 of its green e-bikes in Hounslow.
Voi recently launched in Ealing and has earmarked other west London boroughs.
Forest said it had secured first place in the council's tendering competition. Its arrival in Hounslow will mean its bikes are available in 18 London boroughs.
However, there have been reports that the council awarded the contract to the firms that offered to pay most for the right to operate within the borough.
Last month Forest bikes were used for 1.5m journeys in London – 60 per cent up on July 2024.

Transport for London has announced free 60-minute rides on its Santander-sponsored 'Boris bikes' each Sunday in August.

Bank of England set to cut rate as UK economy weakens
The Bank of England is widely expected to cut its key interest rate Thursday, with policymakers mindful of US tariffs and their potential risks to an already-struggling UK economy. With the BoE likely to trim borrowing costs by a quarter point to 4.0 percent, focus will be on potential changes to the central bank's economic growth and inflation outlooks. "There are clear signs of (UK) economic deterioration, particularly stemming from the labour market," Victoria Scholar, head of investment at Interactive Investor, noted ahead of the latest rate call. "Yet policymakers must weigh this up against the risk of inflationary pressures particularly with rising food prices and international uncertainty around (US President Donald) Trump's tariffs and volatility in energy markets." Against this backdrop, analysts expect splits within the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee. Some argue that while the majority of the nine policymakers, including governor Andrew Bailey, will vote for a quarter-point cut, some are likely to demand an even larger reduction and others no change. A quarter-point cut Thursday would be the BoE's fifth such reduction since starting a trimming cycle in August 2024, emphasising its "gradual" approach to reducing rates. The BoE's main task is to keep Britain's annual inflation rate at 2.0 percent but the latest official data showed it had jumped unexpectedly to an 18-month high in June. The Consumer Prices Index increased to 3.6 percent as motor fuel and food prices stayed high. - Weak economy - Latest official figures also show that Britain's economy unexpectedly contracted for a second month running in May and UK unemployment is at a near four-year high of 4.7 percent. This is largely down to Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour government increasing a UK business tax from April, the same month that the country became subject to Trump's 10-percent baseline tariff on most goods. London and Washington reached an agreement in May to cut levies of more than 10 percent imposed by Trump on certain UK-made items imported by the United States, notably vehicles. Last month, the BoE warned in a report that tariff unpredictability and Middle East conflicts pose risks to UK financial stability. The US Federal Reserve last week kept interest rates unchanged, defying strong political pressure from Trump to slash borrowing costs in a bid to boost the world's biggest economy. Asked about US tariffs following the decision, Fed Chair Jerome Powell told a press conference: "We're still a ways away from seeing where things settle down." The European Central Bank is meanwhile widely expected to keep rates unchanged at its next meeting, with eurozone inflation around the ECB's two-percent target. In June, Sun announced a 10.6% dividend increase, which translates to a $1.04 per share payout for investors. The residential REIT specializes in owning and operating manufactured housing and residential vehicle communities. Sun's portfolio includes 502 properties spread across the U.S., the U.K., and Canada. It's currently trading around $116, but many analysts believe it's primed for a comeback. Benzinga recently compiled the opinions of 10 analysts, and Sun Communities' average 12-month price target is $139.12. The highest estimate is $147, while the lowest is $126. Both are improvements over the current share price. There may be solid upside for investors here. Millrose Properties (NYSE: MRP) was the second-largest dividend winner for shareholders. It announced a 6.2% quarterly dividend increase in June, which translates to $0.69 per share, which the REIT paid on July 15. This specialty REIT refers to itself as a Homesite Option Purchase Platform. It acquires homesites for builders and then grants the builder an option to purchase the homesite at a later date. Then, Millrose uses the sale profits to identify new home sites. If the builder declines the option, Millrose has a readymade home site that it can sell to another builder or developer. Millrose Properties was created as a spinoff from Lennar (NYSE: LEN LEN.B) and has only been trading since February. Since then, Millrose Properties' share price has risen from $21.94 to its current price of $30.54. This is a new REIT with a unique business model, but its relationship with Lennar suggests that it may have at least one long-term partner for its projects. With that said, Millrose Properties' short track record certainly raises its risk profile. Benzinga's compilation of analyst ratings shows an average share price of $31.50, which doesn't represent tremendous growth from today's price of $30.54. It's important to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day, and Millrose Properties helps to provide a product that every American needs. This could be a solid long-term growth Properties (NYSE: EPRT) is third on the list with a modest 1.7% dividend increase. That bump will net Essential Properties' shareholders $0.30 per share. This commercial REIT operates a portfolio of free-standing, single-tenant properties with net leases to long-term tenants. According to Essential Properties' website, its portfolio includes 2,190 units in 49 states. Perhaps most impressively, Essential Properties has a 99.6% occupancy rate. Benzinga surveyed a panel of 20 analysts, and the average price target for Essential Properties was $32.96. That offers some upside from the current share price of $30.67, and shareholders will also earn a 3.84% dividend. Essential Properties may not offer the excitement of an AI stock, but its share price has grown since its 2018 IPO price of $13.50. It has the potential to be a long-term winner, but this REIT is still in its very early stages.
