Ian Wright slams pitch as Arsenal beaten by Real Madrid in Women's Champions League: 'F****** disgrace'

Yahoo19-03-2025

Ian Wright slammed the condition of the pitch as Arsenal were beaten by Real Madrid in the Women's Champions League.
The Gunners fell to a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their quarter-final tie, with Linda Caicedo opening the scoring in Madrid and Athenea del Castillo doubling the lead with a strike from distance in the final ten minutes of the match.
It leaves Arsenal requiring a big comeback at the Emirates Stadium next week if they are to avoid a last-eight exit in Europe.
They can, at least, be confident of a far better playing surface in north London, with both sets of players having to endure an awful pitch in Madrid.
It was muddy and heavy from the start and only deteriorated further as the rain fell throughout the match, and conditions were perhaps to blame for Leah Williamson failing to intercept a pass played forward by Caroline Weir, allowing Caicedo in for the opening goal.
Free-flowing football was almost impossible on that pitch and Wright, watching at home, took to Instagram to post a video taking aim at the state of the surface.
He said: 'Watching the Champions League quarter-final. Real Madrid's pitch - this is worse than Derby's pitch the other day in the Conti Cup final.
'This is a f****** disgrace the pitches these girls have to play on.'
As Wright referenced, there was criticism for the surface during the Women's League Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City at Pride Park.
Sonia Bompastor won her first trophy as Chelsea boss, but made it clear that she viewed the pitch as unacceptable.
"It is a shame to have this pitch for a final, especially when you expect in England to have the best groundsmen and pitches in the world," Bompastor said.
"I'm not sure if it was a men's final game it would be the same. We just need to make sure we have the best facilities and grass to play the games."

Kylian Mbappé released from hospital after being treated for gastroenteritis

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has been released from hospital after being treated for gastroenteritis, the club announced on Thursday. Real Madrid had said earlier on Thursday that the 26-year-old had been admitted to hospital after suffering from 'an acute case of gastroenteritis.' The Spanish club said he would undergo tests and 'follow the appropriate course of treatment.' Later in the day, Los Blancos said that Mbappé had left hospital and returned to the team's training complex in Palm Beach where he would 'continue with specific medical treatment and will gradually return to team activity.' Gastroenteritis is an infection of the intestines that can cause diarrhea, pain or cramping in your abdomen, nausea or vomiting, and sometimes fever, as described by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Mbappé missed Real Madrid's opening game at the FIFA Club World Cup on Tuesday in Miami where it drew 1-1 with Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia. Real's next game at the tournament is against Mexican side, Pachuca, on Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its final group game is against Salzburg on June 26 in Philadelphia. The Club World Cup is Real's first competition under new head coach Xabi Alonso who replaced Carlo Ancelotti at the end of the season. In Mbappé's debut campaign with Real Madrid last season, the French captain scored 43 goals in 56 matches, winning the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup along the way – as well as the European Golden Boot as Europe's top scorer – but missed out on the La Liga title by four points and was knocked of the Champions League by Arsenal in the quarterfinals.

Araujo's goal was a thing of beauty, and it will be up to Moises Caicedo to ensure he doesn't get that amount of time and space at the Linc on Friday. Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez helped Chelsea see off LAFC, but the performance left a lot to be desired, with the likes of Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke never getting out of first gear. Liam Delap's assist on debut was the biggest positive for Enzo Maresca's men, though Romeo Lavia in particular seemed to love the FIFA Club World Cup's individual walkouts. Both teams expressed their shock that their opening games were played in near-empty stadiums, and with this clash scheduled for 2 p.m. local time at a 67,000-seater arena, they'd better get used to it. Martin Zubimendi in London to meet Arsenal officials ahead of Real Sociedad move

Martin Zubimendi is in London to meet Arsenal officials and complete the formalities of his transfer from Real Sociedad to the north London club. Arsenal have been working for a considerable time on a deal for the Spain international, who has a €60million (£51.7m; $63.4m) release clause in his contract with Sociedad. The Premier League club's pursuit of Zubimendi has been driven by head coach Mikel Arteta and was reinvigorated when the clubs were in talks over a deal for Mikel Merino to move to the Emirates Stadium last summer. As reported by The Athletic earlier this month, Real Madrid – now coached by former Sociedad player Xabi Alonso – admired Zubimendi but decided not to pursue a move for the player this summer. The Athletic reported on June 10 that Arsenal regarded the deal as done, despite noise around Real's interest. Advertisement In January, The Athletic reported Arsenal's plans for a summer bid for Zubimendi, who Liverpool had attempted to sign last summer, only for the Spaniard to remain in San Sebastian for the remainder of the campaign. Arteta's side, who reached the Champions League semi-finals this season and finished second in the Premier League, have struggled with injuries, particularly up front, and so an attacking signing in the summer is a priority. However, signing a midfielder such as Zubimendi is also important due to the departure of Jorginho to Flamengo and Thomas Partey's expiring contract. Talks have been held over a new deal for Partey. Zubimendi scored two goals and provided two assists in 36 La Liga appearances for Real Sociedad this season as they finished 11th. Analysis by Thom Harris A player born and raised in a city captivated by the football of Xabi Alonso, coached by the man himself, playing where he once played — Zubimendi couldn't be better placed to become the sport's next great pivote. For all the romanticism of his footballing upbringing — his destiny at the peak of the game — Zubimendi remains as grounded and as pragmatic as they come. With more touches, passes and carries than any other team-mate, he inspired his boyhood club to Champions League qualification in 2022-23 (they reached the round of 16 last term) anchoring a technically gifted Real Sociedad midfield with intuitive defensive positioning and expansive passing from deep. Generally, Real Sociedad like to start play from the back and they are not averse to playing short, risky passes around their own penalty area to lure the opposition in. Zubimendi is often the receiver, picking up the ball under pressure and facing his own goal. It's a role that requires not only immaculate technique, but quick and nerveless decision-making, ensuring the right pass — at the right speed, angle, and elevation — is played to allow his team-mates to progress the ball. It also needs confidence, but not too much, to occasionally look to sidestep the pressure himself. Zubimendi is the cog between the defence and the midfield – the spare man Real Sociedad need to win these mini-battles and move into the space that has been created by their brave, press-baiting build-up.
