UFC fighter who withdrew at last minute breaks silence after rival's dig
UFC sensation Maycee Barber has fiercely responded to Erin Blanchfield's jibe that her life is 'a mess' following a seizure that forced her out of their bout.
The 27-year-old was set to headline UFC Fight Night at the UFC Apex against Blanchfield on Saturday evening. However, in a shocking turn of events, the flyweight clash was scrapped just before their entrance due to Barber suffering a seizure backstage.
Blanchfield didn't hold back in criticising her opponent after the fight was called off, branding Barber 'unprofessional' and dismissing any possibility of rescheduling their match-up. As Blanchfield's scathing remarks went viral online, it did not take long for her rival to issue a response.
Barber, who had to pull out of the fight on medical grounds, stood by her professionalism. "Not what I had planned for a Sunday post. Thank you to everyone for the prayers and support," she said. "I owe an apology to UFC, [UFC matchmaker] Mick Maynard, Dana White, [UFC matchmaker] Sean Shelby and Erin Blanchfield.
"P.S: My life is not messy; this is just a bad hand. We will get to the bottom of it all and be back." The fighter also shared images on social media showing her connected to ECG leads, as well as a snapshot from her hospital bed, underlining the seriousness of her condition.
Following her social media update, it was evident that she wasn't fit to fight in Saturday's main event. Prior to the contest, Barber had a mishap at the weigh-in, clocking in at 126.5lbs. The top contender aimed to continue her impressive spell in the cage, bouncing back from consecutive losses to Roxanne Modafferi and Alexa Grasso in 2020 and 2021 with a six-fight winning streak, claiming victories over rivals such as Jessica Eye, Amanda Ribas, and Katlyn Cerminara.
Despite brutally criticising her rival, Blanchfield has recently changed course on her scathing remarks towards Barber. In an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Blanchfield clarified her harsh comments after Barber's medical issues surfaced following Saturday night's fight card.
'She can't control medical issues that she's having, so that's not unprofessional. I meant more the weight miss on Friday and the way she approached it,' Blanchfield said. 'I believe she was offered more time to cut weight and didn't, missed weight and then still was acting the way she was at the weigh-ins. So that's more what I meant about being unprofessional…[being unreliable] I still stand by, she pulled out of the first [fight] and now this one.
'I know she has issues, but if she does have those severe medical issues, that's why I wouldn't want to be matched up with her again,' Blanchfield continued. 'I was caught up in the moment myself, she probably does have some issues…and she probably should've pulled out sooner so that I would've had another opponent. Not being honest about her condition wasn't the right thing to do.'

Alexander Volkanovski insists Lerone Murphy is ‘no-brainer' as next challenger after UFC 319 win
Alexander Volkanovski has insisted that Lerone Murphy is a 'no-brainer' as his next challenger for the UFC featherweight title, after the Briton's stunning knockout of Aaron Pico. In the co-main event of UFC 319 on Saturday (16 August), Murphy finished Pico with a spinning back elbow in the first round, brutally ending the latter's UFC debut. Pico, 28, made his name in Bellator and claimed that an emphatic win over the highly-ranked Murphy, 34, might propel him straight into a title fight. But instead, Murphy strengthened his case to challenge two-time champion Volkanovski next. The Briton's win over Pico took his UFC record to 9-0-1, dating back to his debut in the promotion in 2019. He is also unbeaten in his overall MMA career at 17-0-1. 'See you in December @LeroneMurphy congrats #ufc319,' Volkanovski wrote on Twitter/X on Saturday, before delving into the matter in greater depth on his YouTube channel. The Australian, 36, said: 'I think it's a bit of a no-brainer. December's looking good. There were earlier dates that probably wouldn't work for guys that are fighting right now anyway, so the later dates were always looking better for me anyway – and for my future potential opponents. So, December's looking like it could be there.' Volkanovski also acknowledged the credentials of Movsar Evloev, but noted how the Russian recently withdrew from a planned bout with Pico due to injury. 'A lot of people are going to be like, 'Movsar should be there,'' Volkanovski said. 'I tried. I tried to make that happen. I thought he deserves it, he did deserve it, he had this fight, and then I'm like: 'Alright, he's going to have to do this [Pico] fight and then he definitely gets it – and then he pulled out. 'And you know what the UFC is like with things like that [...] Maybe it was a serious injury, I'm not sure, I don't know what it is. Maybe that's why he can't fight, I don't know, but it doesn't look like it's going to be Movsar. I've tried with all of them, but it looks like it's Lerone Murphy. It makes a lot of sense, so let's do Lerone Murphy. December, sounds great.' Another match-up with the potential to crown a No 1 contender is Jean Silva's fight with Diego Lopes in September. While Lopes almost certainly wouldn't gain a title shot with a win, having lost to Volkanovski with the vacant belt on the line in April, Silva might. 'Did I know that the winner of this is going to be fighting for the title?' Volkanovski said of Murphy vs Pico. 'No, I don't. I still don't have no clear answers. But at least you had Pico saying he thinks he's going to knock me out and outwrestle me, and obviously I end up saying something back. 'I don't think he was being disrespectful for that, and I wasn't being disrespectful. I'm literally just trying to put the feelers out there. Who knows who I've got next? 'It could be Lerone Murphy, it could have been Pico, it could [be] Silva if he beats Diego. Movsar, you never know, I don't know. Or even Yair [Rodriguez]. I'm trying to put the feelers out for whoever it is, so it makes sense.' Volkanovski first held the featherweight title from late 2019 until early 2024, recording five successful title defences along the way. He then lost the belt with a knockout defeat by Ilia Topuria, who gave up the gold this February to move up to lightweight, where he claimed a second title. After Topuria vacated the featherweight belt, Volkanovski outpointed Lopes to reclaim the 145lb crown in April.

Francis Ngannou provides update on Deontay Wilder fight and MMA return
Francis Ngannou has been out of action for nearly a year, but the PFL star has no plans to return to the SmartCage as he looks to secure a boxing match with Deontay Wilder Francis Ngannou has expressed his desire to face Deontay Wilder in the ring, following the PFL star's admission that talks between the two camps are set to take place. Ngannou, who left UFC two years ago, signed a lucrative deal with PFL but not before dipping his toes into the world of professional boxing. He made his debut in October 2023 against Tyson Fury, in what was expected to be an easy win for the 'Gypsy King'. However, Ngannou proved to be a formidable opponent, even managing to floor the Brit, although he ultimately lost by split decision after a thrilling bout. He returned to the ring in March 2024 to face Anthony Joshua, but this time the fight was more one-sided, with Joshua delivering a knockout blow in the second round. In October, Ngannou made his PFL debut, defeating Renan Ferreira in the first round. Despite it being nearly a year since his last fight, the 38-year-old has no immediate plans to return to the SmartCage, reports All Out Fighting. Instead, he is setting his sights on a showdown with Wilder. The heavyweight from Cameroon has been vocal about wanting to fight the 'Bronze Bomber' and it appears that discussions between the two teams will soon take place. When questioned about a potential return to MMA this year, Ngannou dismissed the idea, stating that his focus is firmly on boxing. "There's nothing yet, I don't think they have an opening for me, so we will wait," Ngannou told Ariel Helwani about his return to MMA. "We still have time. Meanwhile, we're trying on the Deontay Wilder fight." When pressed about whether Ngannou fancies a bout with the American heavyweight, the 38-year-old responded: "Yes. I do." He continued: "We haven't engaged personally, but it's gonna be soon. We are setting some things up, but I keep training. I'm training." Wilder is considered the third pillar of the division's elite triumvirate, alongside Fury and Joshua, before Oleksandr Usyk entered the heavyweight scene. The 'Bronze Bomber' was a devastating presence, delivering numerous savage knockout triumphs as champion before falling to Fury. Following his second defeat to Fury in 2021, the boxing veteran bounced back with victory over Robert Helenius, only to endure consecutive setbacks against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. He secured his first triumph in almost three years this past June, overcoming Tyrrell Anthony Herndon. In the same interview with Helwani, Ngannou later asked if the fight is his top choice across all sports and opponents. 'I would say so, since the Jon Jones fight is off," said Ngannou. "It [the Jones fight] cannot be a part of my top choice.' Both Ngannou and Jon Jones have been tipped to fight each other for quite some time, but nothing has ever materialised. Regarding the potential clash, Ngannou admitted: 'No, it never got off the ground. For sure, the UFC doesn't want anything to do with co-promotion stuff. I think even Turki [Alalshikh] tried to make that fight happen. They don't want it.' On the American's retirement, Ngannou speculated: 'Maybe that was his own maneuver of negotiation. Retirement doesn't mean anything. If he decides tomorrow that he's fighting, then that retirement is void. It means nothing. Nobody will stop him if he keeps training. That doesn't change anything.' When is Francis Ngannou's next fight? It's been nearly a year since Ngannou last stepped into the ring. The PFL recently hosted two historic events in Africa, and Ngannou played a significant role in introducing MMA to his cherished continent. However, many were left puzzled as to why he did not participate in either of the two cards. Explaining why he did not fight, he said: "For example, like if you want to know what exactly is the reason why I wasn't there. I wasn't very okay with the first PFL Africa event seeming to be like an undercard. "Quoting him, we work a lot for that, PFL Africa, but I hoped PFL Africa's debut would have at least have its glory, its moment. But that wasn't my decision and I wasn't down for it. I express my feeling to them." With Ngannou apparently keen to take on Wilder, a potential clash could happen before the year ends. The 'Bronze Bomber' disclosed prior to his comeback that he's aiming for two fights this year and remains willing to face the former UFC heavyweight champion.
