Montana will head to NCAA Tournament for first time since 2019 with 91-83 win over Northern Colorado
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Kai Johnson scored six of his 23 points late to help No. 2 seed Montana pull away and beat top-seeded Northern Colorado 91-83 in the Big Sky Championship title game on Wednesday night.
Montana lead by as many as 14 points early in the second half, but Northern Colorado later used an 18-9 surge to pull within 74-73 with 3:35 remaining. Johnson answered with a three-point play and a 3-pointer to stretch the Grizzlies' lead to 80-73 with 2:24 left. The Bears got within five points twice but didn't get closer.
Montana (25-9), which has won 14 of its last 15 games, collected its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2019 and its 12th overall to extend its conference record. The Grizzlies also won their 51st Big Sky Tournament game, surpassing Weber State for the most in league history.
Brandon Whitney added 18 points for Montana, which shot 65% (30 of 46) overall and 24 of 28 (86%) from the free-throw line. Joe Pridgen chipped in with 17 points and Malik Moore had 15.
Jaron Rillie scored 24 points and had six assists to lead Northern Colorado (25-9). Langston Reynolds added 18 points, Brock Wisne had 15 and Isaiah Hawthorne had 14.
Montana took the lead for good midway through the first half and led 48-39 at the break. Moore scored seven points during an 11-6 spurt to give the Grizzlies a 59-45 advantage with 16:22 to play.
Northern Colorado's last NCAA Tournament appearance was in 2011.

The Nationals loaded the bases in the third on two walks and a catcher's interference. Their first hit of the night was an RBI infield single by CJ Abrams, and Bell followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Key stat Senga has allowed 18 earned runs over 27 innings in his past six starts for a 6.00 ERA. 49ers trade for Chiefs receiver Skyy Moore, AP source says
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a deal to acquire receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday. A person familiar with the trade said the teams will swap sixth- and seventh-round picks in 2027 in the deal that sends Moore to San Francisco. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade can't be finalized until Moore passes a physical. Moore was drafted by Kansas City in the second round in 2022 but hasn't produced much in his first three seasons. He had 43 catches for 494 yards and one TD in 36 games. He didn't catch a single pass last season because of a a core muscle injury. Moore did catch a TD pass in the fourth quarter of Kansas City's 38-35 win in the Super Bowl against Philadelphia following the 2022 season. Moore had an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of a preseason game last Friday at Seattle. The 49ers have gone 227 consecutive regular-season games without a punt return touchdown for the second longest active drought in the NFL. The Niners were in dire need of healthy receivers. Brandon Aiyuk is working his way back from major knee surgery and isn't expected to be able to play until at least Week 6, while fellow starter Jauan Jennings has been out for most of training camp with a calf injury. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday on his radio show that Demarcus Robinson is facing a three-game suspension, pending appeal, after pleading no contest last month to a misdemeanor DUI charge. Rookie Jordan Watkins is out with a high ankle sprain and second-year pro Jacob Cowing is nursing a hamstring injury. Cowing hurt his hamstring the first day of training camp and returned to practice last week. Cowing tweaked the injury on Tuesday and missed practice Wednesday. ___
