Eagles Slot Cornerback Named NFL Best
Eagles Slot Cornerback Named NFL Best originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Through the first four weeks of the 2024 season, the Philadelphia Eagles fielded one of the worst pass defenses in the game. All that changed after the bye week. Advertisement While some analysts will point to a more buttoned-up unit under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, one player's arrival certainly changed the foundation of Philadelphia's defense. Cooper DeJean, the defensive back out of Iowa, missed most of training camp and the first month of the season due to a hamstring injury. The moment he arrived on the field in Philadelphia's 20-16 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 6 (the first game after their bye week), he quickly became an integral part of Philly's defense. A few months later, not only is DeJean a Super Bowl champion/hero, but the league has begun to recognize him as the best in the league at his position. Bill Barnwell of ESPN wrote a piece this week detailing DeJean's prowess in the slot and how no cornerback can match the kind of impact he had on Philadelphia. Advertisement "Yes, he's already there," Barnwell said. "DeJean spent the first month of his rookie season on the sideline, but after Philadelphia's Week 5 bye, his move into the starting lineup coincided with a massive defensive improvement. "After ranking 26th in expected points added (EPA) per play on defense before the bye, the Eagles were comfortably the league's best defense by the same metric afterward." Barnwell did add that DeJean will see more time this year on the outside in addition to his usual work in the slot. The departure of Darius Slay will force the Eagles to get creative in the back end of their defense. DeJean appears more than up to the task. Advertisement If he's anything like he was in the slot last season, Philadelphia's nickel corner may be one of the league's best and most versatile players. Tom Brady Names 'Best Receiver of All Time' Without Hesitation
Tom Brady Names 'Best Receiver of All Time' Without Hesitation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tom Brady is widely considered the greatest NFL player of all time, and he has the accolades to back it up. Advertisement A seven-time Super Bowl winner, five-time Super Bowl MVP and three-time NFL MVP — among many other accomplishments — Brady has won it all in his legendary 23-year pro career. Before Brady established himself as the greatest NFL player of all time, however, there was one player whom many considered as the greatest: San Francisco 49ers legend Jerry Rice. In fact, back in 2010 when the NFL released its top 100 list of the league's greatest players, Rice landed at No. 1. NFL legend and former New England Patriots QB Tom Bartel-Imagn Images Brady, for his part, has nothing but admiration for Rice. The former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback made that abundantly clear during the Fanatics Fest, while he was opening a pack of sports cards on Friday. Advertisement After he pulled a Rice card from the pack, Brady couldn't help but look back at his younger days when he was watching the wide receiving icon. Not only did the 47-year-old Brady say he was the biggest Rice fan, but he also loved the Niners because of him. "Gotta love me a Jerry Rice," Brady said while showing the Rice card he got. He then proceeded to say that the 13-time Pro Bowler is the "best receiver of all time." For what it's worth, Jerry Rice himself has shown great respect toward Tom Brady in the past as well. In 2021 after TB12 won his seventh Super Bowl ring, Rice appeared to pass the GOAT torch to Brady. Advertisement "When you got seven rings, you're doing something right," Rice said at the time, per Bleacher Report. "I think with Brady, he still wants to play. He said something about playing until he's 45. I think he can do it now in this league because players are so much more protected. So, yeah, he can have that GOAT status. I never wanted that status anyhow." It is interesting to note that Rice also replied to Brady's statement in the comments section of Topps' video on Instagram, saying, "Thanks G.O.A.T." Indeed, greatness recognizes greatness, and Brady and Rice have certainly shown that.
