Flying High: First-place Toronto Blue Jays return home with reinforcements coming

TORONTO – It was feast or famine for the Toronto Blue Jays on their recent road trip that included a record-breaking beatdown of the Colorado Rockies and a series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The first-place team is back home for a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs starting Tuesday night at Rogers Centre ahead of a three-game weekend set against the Texas Rangers. Toronto leads the American League standings at 69-50 and has a four-game lead on the Boston Red Sox entering play Monday night. Here's a look at five Blue Jays storylines to watch with about one-quarter of the season remaining: BIEBER FEVER The resurgence of veteran right-hander Max Scherzer and emergence of southpaw Eric Lauer has given Toronto's starting rotation more stability. The team's five-man crew – which also includes Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios and Chris Bassitt – could soon become a six-man group as Shane Bieber nears a return. The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner, who was acquired from Cleveland at the trade deadline, has impressed in his Triple-A rehab appearances. Bieber underwent Tommy John surgery last year. He has a career record of 62-32 with a 3.22 earned-run average over parts of seven big-league seasons. OFFENCE CLICKING Toronto leads the major leagues in several offensive categories thanks in part to back-to-back-to-back routs of the Rockies last week. The Blue Jays set a modern-era big-league record with a whopping 63 hits over the three games in Colorado. Toronto also set a franchise record with 45 runs scored. After dropping two of three games in Los Angeles over the weekend, the Blue Jays still lead the big leagues in hits (1,099), batting average (.269) and on-base percentage (.339). Toronto is also third in OPS (.767). TOUGH DECISIONS The Blue Jays will have some tough decisions to make this month as some big-name players get set to return to the lineup. Second baseman Andres Gimenez will soon be activated after spending five weeks on the injured list with a left ankle sprain. Outfielder/designated hitter George Springer, who has been out for two weeks due to a concussion, could also soon return. Recent call-up Buddy Kennedy is the most likely player to be sent down. A second roster move is expected to be a much tougher call given it will likely involve a player who sees more regular playing time. ARMS RACE A couple of hard-throwing right-handers could make their mark at the big-league level for the Blue Jays over the coming weeks. Alek Manoah has impressed in his minor-league starts as he continues to build up after undergoing elbow surgery last year. Manoah finished third in Cy Young Award voting in 2022 and is 29-20 with a 3.34 ERA over 75 career starts for the Blue Jays. Normally a starter, top pitching prospect Trey Yesavage threw in relief for Double-A New Hampshire last week for the first time since being drafted last year in the first round. He had nine strikeouts over five innings. STRETCH DRIVE Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. A playoff berth appears to be a slam dunk for Canada's lone big-league baseball team. Entering Monday's games, Toronto has a 98.3-per cent chance of qualifying for the post-season, per FanGraphs projections. The website lists the Blue Jays at 78.1 per cent to win the East Division and at 65.8 per cent to earn a first-round bye to the division series. After this homestand, Toronto visits the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins before returning to Rogers Centre to play the Minnesota Twins and MLB-best Milwaukee Brewers. Pete Carroll, Aaron Rodgers head a list of familiar faces in new places this NFL season

Aaron Rodgers joined Pittsburgh. Davante Adams went to Hollywood. Cooper Kupp is in Seattle. Russell Wilson's latest stop is the Big Apple. But the oldest face in a new place this NFL season is 73-year-old Pete Carroll on the sideline in Las Vegas. Carroll is leading the Raiders after a one-year hiatus from coaching following 14 years with the Seahawks. Rodgers and Wilson are the most notable quarterbacks who changed teams. Geno Smith, Sam Darnold, Justin Fields and Jameis Winston also found new homes. Several star wide receivers joined Adams and Kupp on the move, including DK Metcalf, Deebo Samuel, Stefon Diggs and George Pickens. On the defensive side, Super Bowl standouts Josh Sweat and Milton Williams cashed in after helping the Philadelphia Eagles dominate Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Teammate Darius Slay also moved on. Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick swapped teams. Jonathan Allen, Grady Jarrett, Joey Bosa, Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw are wearing new uniforms. Here are 25 of the top players on new teams: Aaron Rodgers The four-time NFL MVP chose to extend his career with the Steelers after two disappointing seasons with the New York Jets. The 41-year-old Rodgers had the worst record of his career last season, going 5-12. But he still threw for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating. The Steelers and coach Mike Tomlin are hoping Rodgers has one more run to help them overcome their recent playoff failures. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston The 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback is on his fourth team in five seasons. He started 6-1 in Pittsburgh last year but the team lost five straight games to end the season. Wilson had 2,482 yards passing, 16 TDs, five picks and a 95.6 passer rating in 11 games in the regular season. He signed with the New York Giants, who also added Winston and then drafted QB Jaxson Dart in the first round. Geno Smith Carroll reunited with Smith in Las Vegas following a trade with the Seahawks. Smith, a two-time Pro Bowl pick who rejuvenated his career in Seattle after replacing Wilson, gives the Raiders stability at QB. Sam Darnold After a breakout year in Minnesota, Darnold cashed in with the Seahawks in free agency. He threw for 4,319 yards, 35 TDs, 12 picks and a 102.5 passer rating while going 14-4 with the Vikings. Justin Fields The No. 11 overall pick in 2021 by Chicago showed promise in Pittsburgh, going 4-2 in six starts. He'll get an opportunity to prove himself with the New York Jets. Davante Adams The three-time All-Pro went from Las Vegas to New York during last season and back to the West Coast with the Los Angeles Rams. Adams had 85 catches for 1,083 yards and eight TDs last season. Cooper Kupp The Seahawks traded Metcalf and signed Kupp, the 2021 AP Offensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl MVP. Kupp hasn't played a full season since '21 but had 67 receptions for 710 yards and six TDs in 12 games in 2024. DK Metcalf Before Rodgers officially signed with the Steelers, they gave him a No. 1 receiver. The two-time Pro Bowl pick had 66 catches for 992 yards and five TDs in 15 games last season for Seattle. Deebo Samuel The Washington Commanders gave Jayden Daniels another playmaker, acquiring Samuel from San Francisco. Stefon Diggs Coming off a torn ACL, the four-time Pro Bowl wideout headed to New England to give Drake Maye a top option. George Pickens The Dallas Cowboys acquired the mercurial Pickens from Pittsburgh to team with CeeDee Lamb and bolster Dak Prescott's options. Laremy Tunsil The Commanders got the five-time Pro Bowl left tackle from Houston to protect Daniels' blind side. Joe Thuney A two-time All-Pro guard, Thuney was dealt from Kansas City to Chicago, which revamped its offensive line to better protect Caleb Williams. Josh Sweat Sweat turned 2 1/2 sacks in the Super Bowl into a $76.4 million deal from the Cardinals. Milton Williams After getting two sacks in the Super Bowl, Williams received a $104 million deal from the Patriots. Darius Slay The six-time Pro Bowl cornerback stayed in Pennsylvania, going from the Eagles to the Steelers. Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick and Jonnu Smith Pittsburgh also boosted its coverage unit by trading for Ramsey, the three-time All-Pro cornerback. The Steelers sent Fitzpatrick, a three-time All-Pro safety, to Miami in the trade that also brought tight end Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh. Jonathan Allen After two Pro Bowl seasons in eight years in Washington, Allen signed with the Vikings to boost the interior of their defensive line. Grady Jarrett The two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle joined Chicago after 10 seasons in Atlanta. Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw An All-Pro safety in 2022, Hufanga left San Francisco for Denver. So did Greenlaw, the veteran linebacker. Joey Bosa The five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher signed with the Buffalo Bills after nine seasons with the Chargers. ___ AP NFL:

Dodgers enter pivotal week, starting with series against Angels

(Photo credit: Katie Stratman-Imagn Images) With their National League West lead having dwindled down to just two games over the San Diego Padres, the Los Angeles Dodgers begin a key week against their Southern California rivals with three games against the Los Angeles Angels in the Freeway Series beginning Monday night in Anaheim, Calif. The Dodgers then return home to host the Padres, winners of 11 of their past 14 games, for a three-game showdown starting Friday night. On paper, the games against an Angels team that has dropped four of its past five games and is six games below the .500 mark would appear to be the easy part of the schedule. But the Angels swept a three-game series at Dodger Stadium in May, outscoring Dave Roberts' squad 23-15 in the process. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-7, 2.51 ERA) will make his first career start against the Angels in Monday's opener and will be opposed by fellow right-hander Jose Soriano (7-9, 4.01). The Dodgers, just 5-5 over their past 10 games, blew a chance to complete a sweep of American League East-leading Toronto with a frustrating 5-4 loss on Sunday. Ernie Clement smashed the first pitch by reliever Alex Vesia in the top of the ninth into the left field bleachers to break a 4-4 tie, and the Dodgers couldn't answer, despite Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman walking the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Rookie left-hander Mason Fluharty, the eighth Toronto pitcher, relieved Hoffman and struck out Shohei Ohtani and then got Mookie Betts to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game. It was the first major league save for Fluharty. The Dodgers had 10 hits, including Ohtani's 41st homer in the first inning, and were gifted 13 walks by Toronto pitchers. However, the Dodgers went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left a season-high 16 men on base. 'I just felt there's no way we should lose this game today,' Roberts said, 'We had them on the ropes numerous times. For us not to win today, it's a frustrating one.' The Angels are six games behind the New York Yankees for the final American League wild-card spot after losing the rubber match of their three-game series at Detroit on Sunday, 9-5. Jack Kochanowicz, who was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake after the loss, gave up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, including a three-run homer to Kerry Carpenter, in three innings to suffer his 10th loss of the season. It was the 13th consecutive start without a win for Kochanowicz dating back to, ironically, a 6-2 victory over the Dodgers on May has made one career relief appearance against the Dodgers and is 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA. Soriano has lost back-to-back starts to the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays. After Soriano allowed seven runs on seven hits in four innings in a 7-3 loss to the Rays on Tuesday, Angels pitching coach Barry Enright enlisted the help of Hall of Fame member Pedro Martinez to discuss with Soriano how to mix up his pitch selection better. The Angels believed Soriano was becoming too reliant on throwing his 97.1 mph sinker, which has made up 51 percent of his pitches this season. 'One of the underrated aspects of Pedro's career was as much power as he had, he had precision and could pitch too, maybe better than anybody ever,' interim Angels manager Ray Montgomery told the Orange County Register. 'I think Sori has that capability. He just has to be able to harness in the moment, and be able to step off the gas as much as he wants to step on it.' Ohtani, who won two of his three Most Valuable Player awards while with the Angels in 2021 and 2023, is scheduled to start Wednesday afternoon's series finale for the Dodgers against Angels veteran Kyle Hendricks.
