EXCLUSIVE: Gilbert Arenas' podcast host on the rise of NBA pods
The post EXCLUSIVE: Gilbert Arenas' podcast host on the rise of NBA pods appeared first on ClutchPoints. If it feels like every NBA star has a podcast… you're not wrong. Current and former NBA greats, such as Gilbert Arenas, are dominating the podcast space. Gil's Arena, produced by Underdog, currently boasts 1.1 million YouTube subscribers and counting. A key part of that success stems from Arenas' collaborative chemistry with his creative team, led by Josiah Johnson, the pod's executive producer and host. I spoke with Johnson about the explosion of popularity in the NBA podcast space, and what separates Gil's Arena from the rest of the crowded field. Johnson's name, or at least his moniker, is already familiar to many basketball fans — he's the internet-proclaimed 'King of NBA Twitter'. If you didn't already know Josiah Johnson from his spot-on memes and pop cultural tweets that have lit up #NBATwitter for much of the past decade, with throngs of famous fans including LeBron James and Jordan Peele, his online persona was recently immortalized in a semi-fictional buddy comedy/documentary film 'Memes & Nightmares' (available to stream on Hulu). But Josiah has taken that brush with fame and ventured out into other creative pursuits, including hosting and executive producing Gil's Arena. Johnson attributes the rise in popularity of NBA player-hosted pods to the fact that 'it gives them an opportunity to control their narrative, to tell their story and do things how they want to do it.' According to Johnson, players producing their own shows gives them the chance to 'leverage their own brands, to create and build platforms for themselves,' outside of the traditional media outlets like past generations' of stars. Johnson knows very well the in's and out's of navigating the bridge between old and new sports media — besides playing for UCLA basketball from 2001-2005, Johnson is also the son of Bucks legend and TV analyst Marques Johnson. Josiah points to the casual nature of the podcast setting as another reason for its appeal. Basketball commentators are often clad in suits and ties on traditional TV outlets to appear more professional, but Johnson says podcast viewers today are looking for something different. 'The reality is, nowadays, they want to see people that look like them, dress like them, and talk like them,' Johnson explains. Gil's Arena shoots from Gilbert Arenas' basement, which Johnson, always ready with a pop cultural allusion, jokes gives the show 'a Wayne's World type feel to it.' Johnson elaborated that 'When you're on a couch with a bunch of former players, people who have been through the same experiences that you have, have a lot of the same shared interests and emotions… I think it makes the people that we bring on, and the conversations we have, a lot more comfortable, intimate, informative… and it just provides another angle from walking onto a big sound stage in a three-piece suit.' In terms of how to stand out in a crowded NBA podcast landscape, Johnson is quick to praise the other popular basketball pods out there, and insists there's room for everyone to help each other build an audience and thrive. As for how Gil's Arena accomplishes that, 'that's just indicative of Gil — the grind, the work ethic, bringing it every single day…' Johnson explains. Coupled with Josiah's drive as executive producer and host to match Gil's energy and 'grind to want to be successful,' they've built a thriving collaboration and online community together. But maintaining and growing a popular NBA podcast is every bit as tough — if not tougher — than it is to play in the NBA. Somehow, Josiah Johnson and Gilbert Arenas have defied the odds and cracked the code for success, and for that a new generation of basketball fans is extremely grateful. Shannon Sharpe's good NFL friend Chad Johnson angles to take over his ESPN role after firing
Chad 'Ochocinco' Johnson appears to be lobbying for Shannon Sharpe's seat on 'First Take' after the Pro Football Hall of Famer was fired Wednesday by ESPN just days after settling a bombshell $50 million lawsuit in which a Jane Doe accused him of rape. While promoting EA Sports and popular video game 'Madden NFL 26' on 'First Take' Wednesday, Johnson, who co-hosts the 'Nightcap' podcast with Sharpe, said he'll be in the studio for the 2025 NFL season. 'I can get used to this for the next … six months,' Johnson said after host Molly Qerim asked whether he liked the new 'First Take' studio, which is located in Lower Manhattan. 'I'm gonna start Sept. 5, if I'm not mistaken, because 'Thursday Night Football,' first week, so, I should be here Friday.' Qerim then pointed to host Stephen A. Smith and told Johnson, a former NFL wide receiver, to 'talk to the boss,' who appeared on the show remotely. 'The fact that you came off vacation for me, that lets me know you're trying to get things started a little early,' Johnson told Smith. 'And I appreciate that. Trying to preheat the oven, I like that. It's gonna be a great season.' Chad 'Ochocinco' Johnson on ESPN's 'First Take' July 30, 2025. X Johnson, who has previously appeared on 'First Take,' has long coveted a spot on the ESPN program, championing himself on social media for months. Sharpe had been off the air at ESPN since late April due to the lawsuit. The plaintiff, who is more than 30 years younger than him, alleged Sharpe brutally sexually assaulted her several times at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025. He denied all allegations of coercion or misconduct in a statement through his counsel to The Post. Shannon Sharpe addresses his ESPN firing during his 'Nightcap' podcast on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. X/Nightcap Sharpe addressed his ESPN firing during Wednesday's installment of the 'Nightcap' podcast, explaining he asked the Worldwide Leader to wait until next Monday to go public with the news due to brother Sterling Sharpe's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this Saturday. 'The only thing that I really asked was that, 'Guys, could we wait until Monday. My brother is going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I really want it to be about him and be about my family. This coming out would overshadow everything he's worked his entire life for,'' Sharpe said. 'And unfortunately, it didn't happen that way.' Sharpe, 57, said he 'profusely apologized' to his older brother, who told him to 'be done' and 'move on' from the situation. 'I really enjoyed my time at ESPN, it gave me an opportunity to bring my audience that saw me just grow … to ESPN, so I'm very grateful for that,' Sharpe said. '… [ESPN] did what they had to do — I'm at peace with that. 'I just wish this thing could have waited until Monday because I hate the fact that I'm overshadowing my brother. The first two brothers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and this is what the headlines are going to be for the next couple of days.' Sharpe originally joined 'First Take' in the fall of 2023 following his FS1 exit.

The Rock's Heartfelt Tribute for Hulk Hogan Is Making Fans Emotional
The Rock's Heartfelt Tribute for Hulk Hogan Is Making Fans Emotional originally appeared on Men's Fitness. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson shared a heartfelt tribute to Hulk Hogan following the wrestling legend's death on July 24 at age 71. "Rest in Peace, Terry Bollea aka The Immortal Hulk Hogan," Johnson started his Instagram caption. "To millions of little kids you were a childhood hero - myself included." Johnson then shared a personal story from his childhood, recalling a moment that would shape his lifelong admiration for Hogan. "In 1984, I gave you your 'HULKSTER' headband back, in the locker room in Madison Square Garden - I was the lucky kid caught it when you threw it in the crowd. You were wrestling 'Mr Wonderful', Paul Orndorff that night in the main event," he wrote. "You were shocked and so happy after the match because you told me that was your very last headband and if it weren't for me, you'd have no way of getting that exact one made again. You promised me that you would get more made and give me a Hulkster headband of my own as a thank you gift. "A month later in Madison Square Garden, you did just that. You kept your word, with a handshake and a 'thanks kid'. And that meant the world to that little 12 year old boy."Years later, Johnson would face his childhood hero in one of the most iconic matches in wrestling history: WrestleMania 18's "Icon vs. Icon" showdown. The matchup also marked Hogan's return to WrestleMania after nearly a decade. "Just 17 years later, and still a kid at the age of 29 years old — I'm standing in the middle of the ring and facing you - one of my wrestling heroes in the main event of WRESTLEMANIA. The match was to decide who would go down in history, as The Greatest of All Time. When you kick out of my Rock Bottom finisher - just listen and FEEL that crowd go ELECTRIC…all for you. I've never felt anything like that in my entire wrestling career. It takes two to tango, but that historic crowd reaction was all for you," Johnson shared. Johnson acknowledged that while he may have won the match, it was Hogan who "drew the house," meaning his name being the reason arenas and stadiums sold out across the country. "From deep in my bones, and on behalf of this wild and crazy world of professional wrestling that we love, I say to you now, and forever…," Johnson concluded. "Thank you, for the house."The Rock's Heartfelt Tribute for Hulk Hogan Is Making Fans Emotional first appeared on Men's Fitness on Jul 25, 2025 This story was originally reported by Men's Fitness on Jul 25, 2025, where it first appeared.
