Activists deface Trump's Scotland golf course over Gaza colonial project - War on Gaza

Al-Ahram Weekly08-03-2025
Pro-Palestinians activists have defaced Donald Trump's luxury golf course in Scotland, spray-painting 'Gaza is not for sale' across the lawn in protest of his colonial plan to seize Gaza, expel its people, and turn it into a 'Middle East Riviera.'
Palestine Action claimed responsibility for the action, stating, 'Whilst Trump attempts to treat Gaza as his property, he should know his own property is within reach.'
The group is dedicated to dismantling British complicity in Israeli apartheid.
Trump purchased the site—commonly known as Trump Turnberry—in 2014. It is one of the world's most exclusive golf destinations, charging around £1,000 per round.
The group also targeted the clubhouse and several greens at the prestigious course.

Trump triggered global outrage by suggesting the US "take over" Gaza while ethnically cleansing the Palestinian population from their lands.

Putin praises Trump's peace efforts and floats potential nuclear deal at Alaska summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the Trump administration's 'energetic' efforts to stop the war in Ukraine and hinted that Moscow and Washington could strike a deal on nuclear arms control during their summit on Friday in Alaska. In his first public comments since US President Donald Trump announced the Alaska summit, Putin on Thursday chaired a meeting of senior Russian officials at the Kremlin to brief them on the state of play in negotiations with the US on Ukraine. 'The current American administration… is making, in my opinion, quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the hostilities, stop the crisis and reach agreements that are of interest to all parties involved in this conflict,' Putin said. In his brief remarks, Putin said the summit with the US aims to 'create long-term conditions for peace between our countries, as well as in Europe, and in the world as a whole.' He suggested this broader peace can be achieved if, in the 'next stages' of discussions with the US, 'we reach agreements in the area of control over strategic offensive weapons.' Although it was not clear what kind of deal Putin referred to, most strategic weapons treaties between the US and Russia have covered nuclear weapons, or nuclear-capable missile systems. The US and Russia agreed to limit their arsenals of nuclear arms under the New START treaty, which came into force in 2011. Under the agreement, both countries had seven years to meet defined limits on the number of deployed intercontinental-range nuclear weapons they can have. The treaty, however, is due to expire in February 2026. In a sign of unease between the two countries, Trump this month said he ordered two nuclear submarines to be strategically positioned near Russia, in response to what he said were 'highly provocative' remarks by Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's former president and the current deputy chairman of its Security Council. Medvedev is prone to erratic outbursts on social media – often raising the specter of nuclear conflict – but Trump said he made the decision 'in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.' 'He's going to make a deal' Trump said Thursday that he believes Putin is 'going to make a deal' to end the war in Ukraine during the talks. 'I believe now he's convinced that he's going to make a deal. He's going to make a deal. I think he's going to,' the US leader said during an appearance on Fox Radio's 'The Brian Kilmeade Show.' Trump said he hopes to broker a second meeting, which would include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. 'Three different locations' are on the table – including the possibility of 'staying in Alaska,' Trump told Fox Radio. The second meeting, which Friday's talks will aim to set up, would be 'the more important meeting,' Trump said in the Oval Office later Thursday. 'We're going to have a meeting with President Putin, President Zelensky, myself, and maybe we'll bring some of the European leaders along, maybe not,' he said. Also on Thursday, Yury Ushakov, Putin's foreign policy aide, shared more details about the plans for Friday's summit, saying the presidents will first have a one-on-one conversation, with the help of interpreters, before continuing talks over a business lunch. The aide said the talks will focus on the war in Ukraine, as well as the prospects of cooperation between Russia and the US in trade and economic issues. After the talks, the presidents will hold a joint press conference, he said. Trump, however, told Fox Radio's Brian Kilmeade that he could decide to have a solo press conference if the 'meeting doesn't end well.' 'I'm going to have a press conference. I don't know if it's going to be a joint. We haven't even discussed it. I think it might be nice to have a joint and then separates,' he said, adding that if the meeting 'doesn't end well, I'll just have a press conference and head out. I'll head back to Washington.' Ushakov will be one of five members on Russia's negotiating team, along with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Kirill Dmitriev, a senior negotiator and head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund. Ukraine and Europe have not been invited to Friday's summit, raising fears Kyiv could be forced into unwanted concessions. Desperate to get Trump's ear one last time before he sits down one-on-one with Putin, European leaders on Wednesday held a call with the US president. The Europeans struck a cautiously upbeat note after the meeting, claiming that Trump had been sympathetic to their calls for an immediate ceasefire, and that Ukraine must have a seat at the table in future negotiations.

Video of far-right Israeli minister taunting imprisoned Palestinian leader sparks outrage

Israel's far-right security minister posted video footage of himself taunting the most high-profile Palestinian prisoner while visiting him in jail this week, in an encounter that has prompted outrage from supporters. The video is the first time that Marwan Barghouti, 66, who is serving five life sentences after being convicted in 2002 for his role in planning attacks that killed five Israeli civilians, has been seen for many years. He appears gaunt and frail, with his arms held together in front as he nods slightly. In the 13-second video, Itamar Ben Gvir taunts and threatens Barghouti, saying, 'Whoever harms the people of Israel, whoever kills children, whoever kills women, we will wipe them out.' Barghouti appears to try to respond, saying, 'You know…' before Ben Gvir promptly cuts him off. 'No no, you must know this, throughout all of history.' The video then abruptly ends. Ben Gvir posted the video on his Telegram channel on Friday morning. Opinion polls have consistently shown him as the most popular Palestinian politician, and his time in prison has only increased the admiration in which he is held by Palestinians. Despite his life sentences, some see him as a successor to the ageing Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Barghouti is only seen very rarely, and often years will pass between videos or images are seen by the public. Nevertheless, he remains hugely influential and is considered one of the few people who could unite Palestinian society behind a single leader. On multiple occasions, Palestinians have tried to secure his release, including reportedly in ceasefire negotiations during the current war. But Israel has refused to consider releasing Barghouti. The video ignited an almost immediate response from Palestinian officials, who condemned Ben Gvir's message and Barghouti's condition. Barghouti has been held in solitary confinement since the start of the war on October 7, according to his family and to the Palestinian Prisoners' Society. Barghouti's wife, Fadwa Al Barghouti, said she didn't recognize him at first and 'maybe part of me doesn't want to acknowledge everything that your face and body express,' she said in a post on social media. 'They are still, Marwan, pursuing you and following you even in the solitary confinement cell where you've been living for two years. The struggle against the occupation and its symbols with you continues, and the chains are still on your hands.' A cousin of Barghouti told CNN that the video showed 'something most awful,' adding that his relative looked 'so thin' and 'so weakened,' which he said was because his cousin is being 'starved in his prison.' When asked what Ben Gvir's motivation to humiliate Barghouti might have been, Mustafa Barghouti said that the far-right minister 'didn't humiliate Marwan – he humiliated himself.' 'You can't humiliate a person who is weakened by being put in a jail and in a cell,' he said. 'In reality, he humiliated the Israeli government by this behavior.' It's unclear why Ben Gvir posted the video, which appears to be shot in a high-security prison in southern Israel where Barghouti is held. The far-right minister of national security is known for making provocative statements and served time in jail for anti-Arab incitement. Palestinian Authority Vice President Hussein Al Sheikh called Ben Gvir's threats 'the height of psychological, moral, and physical terrorism practiced against prisoners, and a violation of international and humanitarian conventions and norms.' Raed Abu Al-Humus, the head of the Palestinian Authority for Prisoners and Released Prisoners' Affairs, said he holds Ben Gvir 'fully responsible' for the Barghouti's life. He warned that the threatening visit was a 'dangerous indication of the intentions' of Ben Gvir.
