Google Expands AI Photo-to-Video Tools to Google Photos and YouTube Shorts
In Google Photos, the AI tool can turn selected photos into short, six-second videos. Meanwhile, YouTube Shorts users will have more flexibility, with the ability to choose their desired clip length. One notable difference is that, unlike in Gemini or the standalone Veo 2 experience, these new tools won't let users write their own prompts to guide what the video looks like. Instead, users must pick from preset prompts like 'Subtle movements' or 'I'm feeling lucky' in Google Photos.
The new AI video feature is rolling out starting today in the US for Google Photos on both Android and iOS devices. YouTube Shorts users in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can expect access within the week.
Google is also introducing a Remix tool for Google Photos that gives photos a fresh twist. Users will soon be able to transform pictures into different styles—think anime, comic books, sketches, or even 3D animations. The Remix and photo-to-video tools will live under a new Create tab in the Photos app, which Google plans to launch in the US next month. This new section will gather all creative tools—like collages, highlight videos, and more—into one easy-to-find place.
Google reminds users that these new generative AI features are still 'experimental,' so results may vary. The company encourages people to give feedback by giving thumbs up or down on generated content, which will help refine the technology over time. Every AI-generated video or image will include Google's invisible SynthID digital watermark, while videos made in Google Photos will also show a visible watermark, so it's clear at a glance that they're AI-created.
This latest update extends Google's lead in generative AI for photos, far surpassing Apple's more cautious approach. Apple's Image Playground tool, for example, deliberately avoids photorealistic generation to limit risks like deepfakes and misinformation.

Corning forecasts upbeat quarterly core sales on AI-driven demand
Specialty glass maker Corning forecast third-quarter core sales above Wall Street estimates on Tuesday, led by artificial intelligence-driven demand for its optical connectivity products . Shares of the company rose about 6% in premarket trading. AI has been a growth driver for Corning's products, such as cables and connectors, which are increasingly used by hyperscale data centers to support the massive computing and data transmission demands. "We also expect an additional growth driver to emerge in the coming months, as new and existing customers seek to leverage our large U.S. advanced manufacturing footprint," CEO Wendell Weeks said. Based in New York, Corning also sells a break-resistant Gorilla Glass for mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, and has produced durable glass with infused color for the back of Apple 's iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus devices. Earlier this month, EU antitrust regulators accepted Corning's offer to waive exclusive deals with mobile phone makers and glass processing companies and scrap purchasing clauses to end an eight-month-long investigation and stave off a possible fine. Corning's largest unit - Optical communications - reported net sales of $1.57 billion in the second quarter, a rise of 41% from a year ago. Its core sales in the quarter rose 12% to $4.05 billion, compared with estimates of $3.86 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Corning expects third-quarter core sales to be around $4.2 billion, beating estimates of $4.01 billion. The company expects quarterly core earnings per share between 63 cents and 67 cents, compared with estimates of 61 cents.

Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation inks MoU with Google Play to train students as game developers
A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation and Google Play and Unity to train computer science students under the 'Naan Mudhalvan' programme. The MoU for 'Google Play and Unity Game Developer Training Programme' was signed in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin at the Secretariat in Chennai. Under the MoU, final-year students would be trained as game developers, artists, and programmers, an official release said. A total of 250 students from the State would undergo the training, the release said. Kunal Soni, Director, Google Play APAC Scaled Partner Management & Ecosystem Partnerships, and Aditi Chaturvedi, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy, Platforms & Devices, India, Google, were present. At another event, the Deputy Chief Minister visited the Nehru Park at Kilpauk in Chennai and reviewed the work on establishing a para-badminton court at a cost of ₹2.38 crore. Infrastructure for para-sports is being established in five other districts at a cost of ₹1 crore each, an official release said.
