Kristen Stewart wants film studios to explore female narratives
Kristen Stewart hopes 'The Chronology of Water' can trigger a change within the movie business.
The 35-year-old star has made her directorial debut with the new biographical drama film, and Kristen hopes that it will encourage more movie studios to explore female narratives.
The Hollywood star said during a panel at Deadline's Cannes Film Festival studio: "We broke the seal. Hopefully we can start flooding, gushing into view."
Kristen observed that, for too long, audiences have been presented with "prescribed stories".
The actress-turned-director said: "We get prescribed stories just shoved into our faces, down our throats."
Kristen is often frustrated with how women are portrayed on the big screen.
She explained: "The imagery that we consume, the conversations that are not allowed, the fact that we can't tell people when we're bleeding, like it's gross or something."
'The Chronology of Water' is based on the memoir of the same name by Lidia Yuknavitch. And Imogen Poots - who plays the film's central character - has revealed that she jumped at the chance to join the project.
The 35-year-old actress - whose character evolves into a triumphant teacher and a mother - shared: "You just don't read things like that. Or if you do read scripts like that, they're not getting made. And so it was just this living, breathing document. It was just such a miracle that we ended up making this film. It's extraordinary."
Meanwhile, Kristen recently revealed that she's always wanted to direct.
The movie star has actually been thinking about directing since the start of her acting career, but she was waiting for the perfect project to come her way.
Kristen told The Hollywood Reporter: "I think I asked a couple of actors on one of my very early projects [about] the youngest director they could stomach working with. And I was sat down by most of them and asked, 'Why are you even asking us that question?'
"I had to wait until right now for this to be actualised, because there are portals that set you free. Texts or songs or conversations that give you ways into figuring out how you want to wield your voice. And even though I always knew that I was waiting for that trigger, I hadn't found it yet until ['The Chronology of Water']. This was eight years ago."
Kristen admitted that reaching her directorial debut has been a "slow and laborious" process. But the actress - who is best known for playing Bella Swan in the 'Twilight' film franchise - relished the challenge of directing.
She said: "I've wanted to direct movies as long as I have been an actor and it's been a multi-tiered development. But for some reason, psychotically, I've wanted to do it forever, because I do think the exchange between an actor and a director is a bridge between two very different positions."

I think he has a lot to say about things like sex and drug use and addiction and those are incredibly interesting, but we don't have a ton of experience in that. "I watch that show on the edge of my seat, vicariously, but I feel like nerds lusting over guys is more what we feel comfortable writing about so that's why we do this. We write about strivers and dorks and people who are underestimated."

Len Wiseman hopes to establish Ballerina franchise
Len Wiseman would "love" to establish a 'Ballerina' franchise. The 52-year-old director recently helmed the 'John Wick' spin-off movie, and Len has revealed that he'd love to continue working with Ana de Armas, who plays Eve Macarro, a ballerina who becomes an assassin, in the new film. Asked about the character's long-term future, Len told The Hollywood Reporter: "I wanted this film to be the best that it could possibly be, but it's hard not to wonder. Len has been a fan of Ana for years, and he's admitted to being wowed by her performance in 'No Time to Die', the 2021 James Bond film. The director shared: "I would love to see that character show up again; it was just too brief. "We had already gotten involved with Ana. I had Ana in mind for quite a while before that. I went and saw a private screening of 'No Time to Die', and that confirmed her casting even more." Ana recently revealed that she's loved becoming part of the 'John Wick' franchise. The 37-year-old actress told The Hollywood Reporter: "I love the character and I think we can go anywhere from where we left it." Ana hailed Chad Stahelski, the director of the 'John Wick' movies, and Keanu Reeves - who plays the legendary hitman - for helping to establish the film franchise. Mia Goth joins cast of Star Wars: Starfighter
Mia Goth has joined the cast of Star Wars: Starfighter. The 31-year-old actress will reportedly join Ryan Gosling in the upcoming sci-fi movie- which is to be directed by Shawn Levy and is in development at Lucasfilms - and will begin shooting later this year before a May 2027 release, according to Deadline. Little is known about Goth's role in the film - which will act as a standalone movie within the space opera franchise - but it will be set five years after 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, with the director recently revealing it's a whole "new adventure" for fans. As quoted by Deadline, Levy, 56, said: 'There are many rumours, some true, some not. … This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It's a new adventure.' Gosling, 44, gushed: 'There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn." The script comes from Jonathan Tropper, who has spent the past two years working on it. The official details follow a report that Mikey Madison allegedly turned down a role in the film. The 'Anora' actress - who was named Best Actress at this year's Academy Awards - was offered a role in the flick but passed on the part, according to Variety. Levy has been working on the movie with Lucasfilm since 2022. Character and plot details remain unknown but last year, Levy said he is not planning to connect his work to any other films or TV shows in the long-running series. Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, he said: "I'll say that the experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about that question. Because there's only so many times that 'Star Wars' movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it's really forced me, because I don't want to do a 'Star Wars' movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie." The filmmaker - who has teamed up with his The Adam Project co-writer Tropper on the project - added he was making the flick with "tone and characters" at the forefront. He said: "I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. "And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfilment, that's Star Wars to me."
