Taqah hosts first camel milking contest
In a celebration of ancient desert traditions, the Wilayat of Taqah in Dhofar Governorate is preparing to host its first-ever camel milking competition, scheduled to take place from June 20 to 22. More than 80 camels are expected to participate in the inaugural edition of this unique event that aims to preserve a lesser-known aspect of Arabian Bedouin heritage.
Unlike camel races — more familiar to international audiences — camel milking contests focus on the quality and quantity of milk. The contest offers a window into the deep-rooted pastoral traditions of Oman's nomadic and semi-nomadic communities, where camel breeding and milk production have long been linked to survival, prestige and cultural identity.
Salim bin Saeed al Maashani, head of the organising committee, said the event will be held under the official supervision of the Office of the Wali of Taqah and coordinated with several government bodies, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, Dhofar Municipality, Royal Oman Police, Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority; and the Ministry of Health.
A mobile veterinary clinic will be deployed at the venue to ensure animal welfare throughout the event, while a panel of judges — including a representative from Oman's national camel racing federation — will evaluate the camels based on lactation output, cleanliness and overall health.
'Camel milking contests are not merely competitive — they are a celebration of the deep bond between the herder and the animal,' said Al Maashani. 'They reflect centuries of knowledge in animal care, nutrition and desert resilience.' Though little known outside the region, camel milk is considered a nutritional staple across Oman's rural areas and has gained global attention for its health benefits. The event also serves as a platform to support small-scale camel breeders and rural families, many of whom rely on livestock as a primary source of income.
The organisers aim to position the contest as a recurring cultural festival, with ambitions to open future editions to participants from across Oman and the wider Gulf region.
In addition to public attendance, the competition has attracted support from local companies as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts, offering modest sponsorships to help fund logistics and prizes.
Taqah, a coastal town just east of Salalah, is emerging as a hub for cultural tourism and rural entrepreneurship. The camel milking contest is expected to boost local tourism and community engagement, especially during the Khareef Dhofar Season, when Dhofar's lush landscapes attract thousands of domestic and regional visitors.
Ultimately, the event ties into Oman's broader cultural preservation and rural development efforts under Oman Vision 2040, a national strategy to diversify the economy while safeguarding traditional knowledge.

Salalah: The Dhofar Governorate is making substantial progress in executing critical healthcare infrastructure projects designed to enhance medical services and expand healthcare accessibility for both citizens and residents. The facility will offer specialized departments including emergency medicine, medical imaging, chemotherapy, dialysis, burn treatment, and rehabilitation services. Additionally, it will house multiple intensive care units catering to adults, pediatric patients, and neonates, complemented by comprehensive educational and support facilities." "The new hospital represents a transformative advancement for healthcare delivery in Dhofar," Dr. Al Qadi emphasized. "Beyond its expanded capacity, the institution will serve as a center for medical education and professional development, significantly enhancing our regional healthcare capabilities." The Director General further noted the accelerated progress of other healthcare initiatives across the governorate, underscoring the government's commitment to timely project completion. "These strategic developments support our decentralization efforts while maintaining the highest standards of medical care through effective public-private partnerships," he added. Key projects demonstrating notable advancement include Thumrait Hospital Conversion. The transformation of Thumrait Health Center into a full-service hospital has reached 80% completion. The upgraded facility will feature dedicated inpatient wards for male, female, and pediatric patients, isolation units, a dialysis department, and comprehensive support infrastructure including conference facilities and administrative spaces. As for Mudhi Health Center, construction of the new medical center in Thumrait stands at 70% completion, with plans for twelve general practice clinics, specialized dental care, radiology and physiotherapy services, diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical services, and health education resources. As far as Mirbat Emergency and Dialysis Unit is concerned, initial construction phases for the accident/emergency department and renal care facility have achieved 15% completion, marking the beginning of enhanced emergency medical services for the region. Regarding Taqa Hospital Expansion Project, the facility has already completed four new clinical units, with ongoing emergency department renovations currently at 10% completion. As for Awqad Health Center Enhancement Project, the second phase of expansion at Awqad Health Center in Salalah has progressed to 82%, incorporating four additional clinical units to increase patient capacity. These strategic healthcare investments demonstrate Oman's commitment to developing world-class medical infrastructure across all governorates, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare services for all residents while supporting the nation's long-term sustainable development objectives.

Oman to produce medical diagnostic machines locally
A strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Dr Mohammad Mahmoodi, CEO of Carbon Technologies, and Dr Frank Vitzthum, Board Member and CTO of R-Biopharm, Germany, in the presence of Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, on Tuesday. Under the MoU, advanced diagnostic manufacturing will be localised in Oman, supporting technology transfer and enhancing the country's health innovation ecosystem. The partnership will enable integration of state-of-the-art assay technologies into its local production lines, supporting both national and regional healthcare priorities. 'It is a milestone MoU in Oman's journey towards eliminating tuberculosis and other diseases from the country, and both communicable diseases and NCDs,' said Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. 'I'm optimistic and this will pave the way for various scientific advancements in the country, especially when it is located near SQU and within the Innovation Park Muscat. In 2024, the government in Oman took a decisive step towards building a more inclusive society with the introduction of a comprehensive welfare system under the new Social Protection Law. Among its many reforms, the provision of a monthly disability allowance of RO 130 has had a profound impact on the lives of people with disabilities across the country. This measure, administered by the newly established Social Protection Fund, represents a significant policy shift, aligning with both Oman Vision 2040 and international calls for universal social protection. Interviews conducted with 19 Omanis with physical disabilities, many of whom are well-known social media and community influencers, reveal the transformative effect of this policy. All participants spoke positively of the allowance, describing it as a lifeline that fosters dignity, autonomy and social participation. They highlighted how the monthly support enables them to address mobility challenges, whether through hiring drivers, purchasing assistive devices, or covering the costs of participating in social and cultural life. For many, it is not simply about financial assistance; it is about regaining control over their lives and feeling more fully included in the fabric of society. The law's broader framework also introduces universal old-age pensions, child benefits, and other forms of targeted support for vulnerable groups. However, for people with disabilities, the allowance stands out as an empowering recognition of their right to participate in society on equal terms. The participants stressed that this form of direct support moves beyond symbolic gestures, offering tangible, practical help that addresses the everyday barriers they face. Nevertheless, the interviews also revealed certain challenges that could limit the system's reach. The lack of a clear, consistent definition of 'disability' in the early stages of implementation created uncertainty over who qualifies for the allowance. While the Social Protection Fund has since issued updated criteria — requiring, for example, an official disability card and meeting specific medical or functional conditions — these definitions, though necessary for transparency, risk excluding individuals whose needs are nonetheless significant. The application process itself was another concern. Several interviewees described it as lengthy and burdensome, involving extensive paperwork and waiting periods. Despite these difficulties, they unanimously agreed that the benefits ultimately outweighed the effort required to obtain them. In addition, recent adjustments to the regulations have introduced periodic re-evaluations of eligibility, with the possibility of suspending payments if criteria are not met. While such reviews ensure that the system remains fair and sustainable, they can also create anxiety among beneficiaries who depend on the allowance for daily living expenses. The participants suggested that simplifying the process and providing assistance with applications could help mitigate these concerns. What emerges from these conversations is a strong sense of gratitude towards the Omani government for introducing a policy that directly addresses the needs of people with disabilities. The allowance has brought about real change, not only by improving mobility and access to essential tools, but also by reinforcing a sense of self-worth and independence. For a country committed to inclusive development, such reforms mark an important milestone. Looking ahead, there is room for further refinement. Clearer eligibility guidelines, streamlined application procedures and expanded outreach efforts could ensure that the system benefits all who need it. Engaging the very influencers who have benefited from the policy to raise awareness and guide others through the process could also strengthen its impact. By recognising the right of people with disabilities to lead independent, dignified lives, the government has taken a meaningful step towards social inclusion. With continued commitment and targeted improvements, this initiative can serve as a regional model of how policy, when grounded in empathy and vision, can transform lives.
