Alabama football 2025 season preview, predictions: Marshall Pritchett

USA Today3 hours ago
Joining a deep position room this fall, could Marshall Pritchett make an impact for the Alabama Crimson Tide at tight end as a true freshman?
A member of Alabama's 2025 recruiting class, Pritchett was one of the final members of that group to commit to the Crimson Tide, doing so during last fall after flipping from an ACC program.
Having now arrived in Tuscaloosa, what however is in store for Pritchett during year one at Alabama?
Here is everything you need to know about Alabama tight end Marshall Pritchett entering the 2025 season.
Marshall Pritchett player information
Marshall Pritchett career stats
This will be Pritchett's first season at the collegiate level. Pritchett has yet to appear in a college football game.
Marshall Pritchett 2024 stats
Pritchett's 2024 season was spent as a senior at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Georgia. Across 12 games a year ago, Pritchett hauled in 51 receptions for 679 yards and 10 touchdowns across 12 games.
Marshall Pritchett recruiting ranking
Per the 247Sports Composite rankings, Pritchett was considered the nation's No. 286 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle, as well as the No. 15 tight end nationally. A four-star prospect, Pritchett flipped his commitment to Alabama from North Carolina in Oct. 2024, and was also considered as the No. 40 player in the state of Georgia where he attended Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School.
Marshall Pritchett 2025 season outlook
Similar to fellow freshman Kaleb Edwards, Pritchett could certainly make an impact for the Crimson Tide in 2025.
However, the Crimson Tide have a deep tight end room entering the fall with starters cemented in Josh Cuevas and Danny Lewis Jr., meaning that Pritchett is a backup likely to start the season. That does not necessarily mean that Pritchett will not play either, as the true freshman could certainly emerge as one of Alabama's top pass catchers at the position.
Overall, except Pritchett to see some action this fall, potentially emerging into a larger role as the season goes along.

Has Alabama football found its punter? What Kalen DeBoer said

Alabama football may have the answer it needs at punter. With James Burnip, the Crimson Tide's starter for the past four seasons off to the NFL, Alabama had both true freshman Alex Asparuhov and Colorado School of Mines transfer Blake Doud battling for reps. Asparuhov missed the spring with an injury and has used fall camp to get into that "rhythm" and push for playing time. But after both of Alabama's scrimmages, Kalen DeBoer said Doud has set himself apart. "He's really to the point where he was at statistically, kind of what we thought he would be before he transferred," DeBoer said. Doud was RMAC Special Teams Player of the Year with Colorado School of Mines, and led all Division 2 punters with averaging 46.6 yards per kick. Nineteen of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line and 13 were for over 50 yards. DeBoer said Alabama pushes all specialists in its weight program that "forces you to do down before you can go up." Doud, DeBoer said, "definitely had an upward trajectory." And through scrimmages, DeBoer said he's seen that show up on the practice field from Doud. "The first scrimmage, I was impressed given the stadium. I'm like, 'OK, he can sustain this,'" DeBoer said. "He certainly has statistically, and you can even see it visually. You're out there watching, you can see the improvement over the last two weeks." Alabama football opens the 2025 season at Florida State Aug. 30. SEC moving closer to adopting 9-game conference schedule: Source

The SEC is moving closer to adopting a nine-game conference schedule, a source briefed on the discussions said, after the conference's athletic directors met this week in Birmingham, Ala. While the conference's presidents will still need to give final approval, it's the closest the conference has been to moving forward with a nine-game schedule — a decision it has been debating for years. Advertisement The SEC currently plays eight conference games, while the Big Ten and Big 12 play nine (the ACC also plays eight). In the spring, ESPN indicated a willingness to increase its payment to the SEC if the conference were to add a ninth league game, though there was no formal offer at the time. The eight-or-nine debate comes amid the backdrop of another debate about the future format of the College Football Playoff. The SEC and Big Ten differed on preferred 16-game formats this summer, with the Big Ten pushing for a format that would include more automatic bids. Part of the reason for that was the inconsistent number of league games each conference plays. In a nine-game conference schedule, every SEC team would have three annual opponents and six new opponents each season. At SEC media days in July, commissioner Greg Sankey said the three annual opponents would not be permanent. The schedules would operate on a four-year cycle, allowing for 'look-ins' to revisit the three annual rivalries. This story will be updated. Spot the pattern. Greg McElroy sees clear 'pecking order' in Alabama football quarterback room after scrimmage

Greg McElroy feels "really good" about what he saw from Alabama football in its first scrimmage. The former Crimson Tide quarterback and WJOX Radio host called Alabama's first scrimmage "very, very, very strong," one where he saw an offense that was "far ahead of schedule." "Usually first scrimmage, defense is way ahead of the offense," McElroy said on the "McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning" radio show Aug. 11. "Usually first scrimmage, it's still a work in progress offensively. You're probably going to turn it over a time or two. You're probably going to have a couple of mistakes in protections. You're probably going to have some busted routes and things like that. On one hand, I can count the amount of mistakes made in the game." For McElroy, that Alabama success on offense starts with Ty Simpson. In the redshirt junior, who is one of three quarterbacks vying for the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback job, McElroy said he saw a passer who "looks very in control." Simpson made the "play of the day," finding Jam Miller downfield off a scramble for a touchdown. "I think Ty was really decisive," McElroy said. "I think he looked really, really comfortable." McElroy said redshirt sophomore Austin Mack had "a really nice day" mostly running with the second team, while Keelon Russell showed ample velocity on his throws, but is still a work in progress with the logistics of the quarterback position. Coming off Alabama's first scrimmage, McElroy doesn't view the quarterback position to be a question mark. "I think it's pretty clear what the pecking order is right now," McElroy said. "Doesn't mean it can't change. But I think you should feel good. Whoever plays quarterback for the Tide this year, I think they are going to be in good hands. I really feel that is going to be the case." Alabama football opens the 2025 season against Florida State Aug. 30.
