Russia looks to boost ties with Asean under Malaysia's chairmanship
MOSCOW: Russia expects an expansion of ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), Russian President Vladimir Putin said during talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Russian News Agency (TASS) reported.
"Malaysia is our long-standing and important partner both overall and in Southeast Asia. I know that you have been chairing Asean since Jan 1 this year. We expect our relations with this respected, solid integration bloc to develop with your help, just as the relations between our countries continue to grow," Putin said at the beginning of the meeting.
The two countries are connected by trade and economic ties, Putin said.
"We have stable trade and economic ties," he said.

REUTERS/Alina Smutko/File Photo (Reuters) - International monitors at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine heard repeated rounds of gunfire that appeared to be aimed at drones reportedly attacking the site's training centre, the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog said on Thursday. Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe's largest nuclear facility with six reactors, in the early weeks of Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Each side has since routinely accused the other of attacking the plant and posing a threat to nuclear safety. Monitors from the International Atomic Energy Agency reported hearing at least five explosions between 11:30 a.m. and 13:45 p.m. local time, each preceded by gunfire, an IAEA statement said. The statement gave no indication of the origin of the drones and said there were no reports of any damage to the centre. "Drones flying close to nuclear power plants could threaten their safety and security, with potentially serious consequences," IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said. "As I have stated repeatedly during the war, such incidents must stop immediately." The statement said it was the fourth time this year that the training centre, located just outside the site perimeter, was reportedly targeted by drones. The plant's Russian management had earlier said Ukrainian drones had landed on the roof of the training center in "yet another attack" on the facility. It said there had been no casualties or damage. The Zaporizhzhia station, with all its reactors in shut down mode, produces no electricity. Before the war, it generated one-fifth of Ukraine's electricity. Grossi last week told Reuters that while Russia had "never hidden the fact" that it wanted to restart the plant, this could not be done soon as it lacked water for cooling and a stable power supply. Selangor Aero Park to advance Msia's regional air cargo hub ambitions
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft operations at KLIA. (Bernama pic) SEPANG : The development of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) will strengthen Malaysia's ambition to become a leading air cargo hub in Asean, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook. He said the 600-acre project aligns with the government's strategy to enhance Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a regional logistics and aerospace centre. Loke said KLIA holds a unique strategic advantage, with a vast land area of 100 sq km and strong connectivity, making it an ideal location for such a development. 'We possess the ingredients and prerequisites unmatched by any other Asean country. KLIA has the potential to expand to five runways (beyond the existing three). 'There is no other airport in the region of this scale,' he said at a press conference following the groundbreaking ceremony for SAP earlier today. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, SAP carries a gross development value of RM2.3 billion and will be executed in phases to ensure a well-structured, future-ready investment ecosystem. The project is expected to contribute RM55.2 billion annually to the aerospace industry and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Elaborating further, Loke said Malaysia has also secured support from China to position KLIA as a regional cargo hub for the Asean market. 'China has agreed to support KLIA as its cargo gateway for the Asean region. This is a highly strategic and significant partnership. 'We also aim to attract investments from aerospace supply chain industries, which includes the production of aerospace components, related technologies, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) services,' he said. He expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft MRO operations at KLIA. To support this vision, he said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia is currently reviewing KLIA's air traffic control system to address the anticipated increase in both passenger and cargo flight traffic. 'We anticipate a significant increase in air traffic at KLIA, involving both passenger and cargo aircraft. A comprehensive redesign of the air traffic control system is currently under way to enhance operational efficiency and optimise traffic management,' he said. On a separate matter, Loke added that an announcement on the KLIA Aerotrain project will be made soon.
