Five arrested for kidnapping, extortion of junior engineer in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur
JAGATSINGHPUR: Kujang police on Wednesday arrested five persons for allegedly kidnapping a junior engineer (JE) of the Rural Development department.
Police said Rajiv Das (23), Sankar Mohapatra (36), Satya Prakash Pradhan (26), Sritam Behera (23) and Suraj Sahoo (29) abducted JE Manas Sahoo on May 16.
Manas, a resident of Narasinghpur in Cuttack, is posted at the Rural Development section in Pankapal and stays in government quarters. Satya had connected with Manas on Facebook and after seeing him wearing gold ornaments, reportedly conspired with the other accused to kidnap and extort money and valuables from him, said police.
As per their plan, Satya contacted the JE and claimed that he wanted to meet him for some official work. After Manas agreed, a car arrived near his quarters. In his complaint, the JE had claimed that while the car driver and another person were already inside the vehicle, two more individuals approached from behind and assaulted him. They forced him into the car at gunpoint. The assailants tore his shirt and recorded a video of his bare body reportedly to blackmail him.
The car then proceeded towards Paradip via Rahama Bazaar in Tirtol. Near Rahama petrol pump, a fifth accomplice joined them. The miscreants then demanded `1 lakh from Manas and threatened him with dire consequences if he failed to comply. When the JE told them he had no money, they allegedly snatched a gold chain and finger ring from him.
The accused reportedly warned Manas to arrange the money, saying they would contact him again for the payment and return his belongings afterwards. They then dropped him off near his quarters, following which he lodged a complaint with Kujang police.
Kujang IIC Bansidhar Pradhan said police have seized the vehicle used in the crime and recovered the stolen gold ornaments from the accused's possession.

Homebound Cinematographer Pratik Shah's Ex Accuses Him of Abuse: "That Would Have Been Rape If He Wasn't My Boyfriend"
Fresh allegations against Homebound cinematographer Pratik Shah have surfaced. His former partner has accused him of sexual and physical abuse. In a recent blog post, she shared disturbing details of the abuse. This isn't the first time she has spoken up against Shah. She previously levelled allegations of sexual and physical abuse against Shah in a Facebook update from 2015. While she doesn't name Shah directly in the blog, she said she is choosing to speak up again because "people need to know the truth". The former girlfriend's detailed blog paints a harrowing picture of emotional manipulation, physical violence, and sexual abuse during their relationship. The blog recounts a pattern of possessive and controlling behaviour, culminating in sexual assault. "That summer, he asked me for my Gmail and Facebook passwords, and in return gave me his. I remember the rage that flew through him when he saw that I had flirted with a guy over Facebook... He screamed in my face that he would kill himself," she writes. She also details a chilling escalation of violence. "The day that I found out that he had been cheating on me was the day he pushed me into a shelf. I should've reported it then, when the neighbours called the police. I didn't." The most serious charge is related to an incident on her birthday weekend, according to the blog post. "I won't get into the details of this situation that consumes me every day, but you get the point. 'No' wasn't an option," she writes, later adding, "That would have been considered rape if he wasn't my boyfriend." "Never, in a million years, would I have thought I would be a 'survivor of abuse'," she writes. Shah had most recently worked as director of photography on Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound, which premiered at the 78th Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim. Several allegations about Shah's inappropriate behaviour surfaced online last week, following Dharma Productions -- the banner behind Homebound -- distanced itself from Shah. As these allegations resurfaced, sources confirmed that Shah has been dropped from the high-profile Sourav Ganguly biopic. Dharma Productions, reportedly associated with the film, issued a brief statement: "We stand firmly against any form of abuse or misconduct. The concerned individual is no longer associated with any of our upcoming projects." Ghaywan is yet to issue a statement on allegations against Shah, who has deactivated his Instagram account since the controversy broke. The filmmaker on Monday shared an Instagram appreciation post for his Homebound team but skipped thanking the cinematographer. This is not the first time Bollywood has had to reckon with allegations of abuse from within its ranks. The resurgence of this 2015 post echoes the wave of #MeToo accounts that flooded the industry in 2018, prompting renewed conversations about accountability and silence. Pratik Shah is yet to respond publicly to the allegations.

'16 and Pregnant' star Whitney Purvis announced the death of her 16-year-old son, Weston Gosa Jr., on Monday via a Facebook post. 'This is so hard to write. My beautiful son, Weston has passed away. He was only 16 years old. Life is so cruel and unfair. I just dont understand. Oh my baby is gone and I don't know what to do with myself,' she wrote in the post. "He was so perfect. This is really my worst nightmare come true. How do you go on in life after losing a child? I'm in disbelief, this cannot be happening. I don't want it to be real,' she added. 'I would do anything just to hold him. Words just can't describe the pain I am feeling.' She continued, 'I love you so much, Weston Owen Gosa. God, I love you so much. You are my heart. While the exact cause of Weston's death has not been disclosed, his stepmother, Amy Gosa, revealed that he had been battling multiple health issues. 'All we know is we got up this morning around 7 am and tried to wake him up, he was not breathing, we attempted cpr and called an ambulance. The paramedics attempted it as well and took him to the hospital in Gordon County where he was pronounced dead,' she wrote in a Facebook post. Gosa continued: 'He had several health issues as well as diabetes. We are completely heartbroken and in shock. It was so unexpected. Losing a child is the most painful thing I have ever experienced and I hope I never experience it again.' 'He was the most amazing son I could have asked for. Mother's whereabouts ‘unknown' after detention by Assam police, son knocks on Supreme Court door
Monowara Bewa, whose son's Habeas Corpus petition the Supreme Court has agreed to hear next week, lives in Khagrabari village in Dhubri district with her family and is among several people who the Assam police have detained since May 23 in a crackdown against people declared foreigners by the state's Foreigners' Tribunals. Her son, 26-year-old Iunuch (Yunus) Ali, has alleged that she has been picked up for deportation, and her whereabouts since then are not known. Bewa was declared a foreigner by an FT in 2016 and placed in detention in Assam's Kokrajhar. She was released on bail in 2019 following the Supreme Court's directions to this effect for those who had completed three years in detention. The Gauhati High Court had upheld the FT order in 2017, and the family approached the Supreme Court through a Special Leave Petition the same year. While the Supreme Court has agreed to hear her son's petition, back in Dhubri, her family remains in the dark about her whereabouts since she was detained on May 24. 'That day, she got a call from the Gauripur police station asking her to report with her documents. Since she goes every month because of her bail conditions, we thought they needed her for something related to that. She and her son went around 5 pm. They were made to wait there until late at night, when a senior official came to take her away, saying he was following instructions from higher authorities. The next day, we went to the office of the border police SP in Dhubri, but the in-charge there said he did not know anything. It has been eight days, and we still don't know where she is,' said her nephew, Maminur Hussain (37). Bewa's neighbour, Jahanara Hussain (55), who is also a local women's leader who has been helping the family with the case, said that on Sunday, she received the link to a Facebook video that purportedly showed Bewa in Bangladesh alongside four others. 'It was circulated among people in the area on Sunday night. It is her in the video, but we still do not have any idea where she could be right now,' she said.
