Palm plot owners gherao PSPCL office in Mullanpur over prolonged power cuts, demand JE's transfer

Mohali: In a show of collective discontent over repeated power outages, members of The Palm Plot Owners and Residents Welfare Association (TPPORWA) staged a protest and gheraoed the PSPCL office in Mullanpur on Wednesday, demanding immediate action and the transfer of the junior engineer (JE) responsible for the area. Around 30 residents from the plots and flats of Manohar Infra, under the Palm project, assembled at the office of the sub-divisional officer (SDO), PSPCL Mullanpur, to voice their frustration over erratic electricity supply in the region. The residents accused PSPCL officials of negligence and blamed the JE for poor handling of power maintenance issues. A written representation, duly signed by TPPORWA president Anil Rattan and fellow residents, was submitted to the SDO and acknowledged on the spot. The protesters demanded a resolution to the ongoing crisis and warned of an escalation in the agitation if the issue persists. "The power situation has become unbearable. Our daily lives are disrupted, especially during peak summer. We want accountability," said Anil Rattan. The matter was also escalated to the executive engineer (XEN), PSPCL, over the phone. According to residents, the XEN assured a prompt resolution to their concerns. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Following the gherao and confirmation that the power supply had been restored, the protesters dispersed peacefully. "We called off the protest after receiving confirmation that the supply has been restored. However, we will not hesitate to return to the streets if outages continue," said Rattan. The incident highlights growing public frustration with basic utility services in peripheral urban areas like Mullanpur, where real estate development has outpaced infrastructure maintenance.

2 GDA officials booked for demanding bribe; 1 held

A supervisor of the Ghaziabad development authority (GDA) has been held for allegedly demanding ₹2 lakh as bribe from a resident for approving construction of a private building in Muradnagar. Police said the anti-corruption team from Meerut, who nabbed the supervisor, has filed an FIR against him along with a junior engineer (JE). The bribe was allegedly demanded on behalf of the JE. The incident came to light on a complaint by Muradnagar resident Surendra Kumar who bought a property on Rawli Road in November 2024 and later constructed a basement and some pillars. Kumar alleged that on May 28, the JE and the supervisor came to the site and asked him to stop work till some talks were held. When the complainant requested them to allow the construction, they demanded ₹2 lakh, without any negotiation, Kumar told the anti-corruption unit. The FIR in this connection was lodged at Muradnagar police station under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and named supervisor Raj Kumar and junior engineer Ajit Kumar, as suspects. The inquiry, prima facie, found that the allegations by the complainant were correct. The investigating team planned to lay a trap and catch the suspects red-handed. On June 2, the supervisor arrived at a designated place in Muradnagar, and the complainant handed him a bag containing the money in cash. While the supervisor was taking the money from Kumar, the team nabbed him. Investigators said he told them that he was collecting the amount as told by the JE as he left to attend some family emergency. 'The FIR names the supervisor and the JE, and the supervisor was arrested by the team of the anti-corruption unit. They also filed the FIR and will take up further investigation in the case,' Surendra Nath Tiwary, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) of rural zone, said. When asked to comment on the allegations, GDA said the act by the staff has dented the image of the authority. 'In connection with the incident, the supervisor has been suspended with immediate effect, and a team will also take up disciplinary action and an inquiry. Meanwhile, senior officials have sought a report about allegations against the JE and will soon apprise the state government about the matter. Further required action will also be taken up,' Rudresh Shukla, media coordinator of GDA, said.

Govt includes Japanese Encephalitis vaccination in national immunization programme

The state public health department has included the Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine as part of the routine immunization programme for Pune, Raigad, and Parbhani districts. Dr Sandeep Sangale, joint director, state family welfare bureau, said, 'The JE vaccination is still not part of national immunization across Maharashtra. There are still 37 districts and municipal corporations in the state that don't have JE vaccination as part of routine immunisation.' According to the officials, in March 2025, a pilot project for the JE vaccination drive was launched by the state health department in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Panvel districts. The health department ordered that the JE vaccination campaign be conducted only until April 30, 2025. Later, the JE vaccine was made part of the routine immunisation programme, they said. In the three districts, there is an eligible population of 50 lakh children in the 1-15 years age group. During the drive JE vaccine dose of 0.5ml will be administered in the muscle on the outer side of the left thigh. Dr Pravin Vedpathak, assistant director of the state family welfare department, who is in charge of routine immunization, said, the first phase of the JE vaccination for children was carried out three years ago in 16 districts of Maharashtra including Gondia, Gadchiroli, Wardha, Solapur, Bhandara and Dharashiv among others. 'Later the JE immunization was made part of routine immunization in these 16 districts. Similarly in Pune, Raigad and Parbhani, the JE vaccination has been made part of the national immunisation programme,' he said. As per officials, JE immunization is conducted for children in both government and private schools, anganwadis, and in the community.

MCG engineer held for taking ₹1L bribe to allow warehouse in Daultabad

The Haryana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday arrested a junior engineer (JE) of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) for allegedly accepting a ₹1 lakh bribe from a trader to permit the construction of a warehouse in Daultabad, officials said on Wednesday. The accused, Sandeep Kumar, was caught red-handed at Rajiv Chowk while allegedly taking money from the complainant, Mahipal Singh, said Anshu Singla, superintendent of police, ACB Gurugram. According to a senior ACB official, Kumar visited the construction site and halted work, calling it an encroachment and illegal. 'To allow the work to continue, Kumar demanded a ₹1.5 lakh bribe nearly two weeks ago. After negotiations, Singh paid ₹50,000 near the Air Force station on Sohna Road on Tuesday morning and agreed to pay ₹1 lakh more by evening,' the official said. Anshu Singla, ACB superintendent of police, Gurugram, said that Kumar was produced before a court on Wednesday and was forwarded to 14 days of judicial custody. Five arrested for kidnapping, extortion of junior engineer in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur

JAGATSINGHPUR: Kujang police on Wednesday arrested five persons for allegedly kidnapping a junior engineer (JE) of the Rural Development department. Police said Rajiv Das (23), Sankar Mohapatra (36), Satya Prakash Pradhan (26), Sritam Behera (23) and Suraj Sahoo (29) abducted JE Manas Sahoo on May 16. Manas, a resident of Narasinghpur in Cuttack, is posted at the Rural Development section in Pankapal and stays in government quarters. Satya had connected with Manas on Facebook and after seeing him wearing gold ornaments, reportedly conspired with the other accused to kidnap and extort money and valuables from him, said police. As per their plan, Satya contacted the JE and claimed that he wanted to meet him for some official work. After Manas agreed, a car arrived near his quarters. In his complaint, the JE had claimed that while the car driver and another person were already inside the vehicle, two more individuals approached from behind and assaulted him. They forced him into the car at gunpoint. The assailants tore his shirt and recorded a video of his bare body reportedly to blackmail him. The car then proceeded towards Paradip via Rahama Bazaar in Tirtol. Near Rahama petrol pump, a fifth accomplice joined them. The miscreants then demanded `1 lakh from Manas and threatened him with dire consequences if he failed to comply. When the JE told them he had no money, they allegedly snatched a gold chain and finger ring from him. The accused reportedly warned Manas to arrange the money, saying they would contact him again for the payment and return his belongings afterwards. They then dropped him off near his quarters, following which he lodged a complaint with Kujang police. Kujang IIC Bansidhar Pradhan said police have seized the vehicle used in the crime and recovered the stolen gold ornaments from the accused's possession.
