Yunus vows constitutional status for 2024 uprising in Bangladesh's ‘July Declaration'

The student-people uprising of 2024 that overthrew the Sheikh Hasina-led government of Bangladesh will get 'constitutional recognition', said the July Declaration that was launched by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) in Dhaka. The Declaration, launched on the anniversary of the fall of Hasina government, blamed the Awami League for creating a one-party state in Bangladesh after 1971 and said the party was 'loyal to external forces'. In a statement sent to The Hindu, the Awami League hit back at the interim government and said the Declaration did not offer anything to the 'protesting job seekers' of Bangladesh. 'Therefore, the people of Bangladesh express their desire that the student-people uprising of 2024 will get proper state and constitutional recognition and that the July declaration will feature in the schedule of the reformed constitution as framed by the government formed through the next national election,' said the Declaration that was launched in an event where representatives of the newly launched National Citizens Party (NCP), the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Jamaat-E-Islami (JEI) stood beside Mr. Yunus. The document started by paying tribute to the Liberation War of 1971 while avoiding any mention of founding figure of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and blamed his Awami League for creating a one party state named BAKSAL (Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League), that Sheikh Mujib had launched in 1975 before his assassination. The Declaration made no mention of the Mukti Bahini which played a leading role in launching guerrilla war against Pakistani forces in 1971. The July Declaration, presented by Mr. Yunus at a public event held on parliament premises of Bangladesh, made several references to the deposed Ms. Hasina, terming her tenure as marked with corruption and decay, and said, '…during the rule of Sheikh Hasina, under her very leadership, an extreme force that was anti-people, autocratic and against human rights turned Bangladesh into a fascist, mafia and failed state and thereby tarnished Bangladesh's international image.' The document said the democratic change of government was disrupted because of 'domestic and external intrigues' and added, '..the Awami League government, loyal to external forces, applied brutal force to suppress people's rightful protests against foreign tutelage, exploitation and domination.' In a televised speech later in the evening, Mr. Yunus described the July Declaration as a 'historic document' and said he will write to the Election Commission of Bangladesh to organise election in February 2026, ahead of next Ramzan. 'All of you should pray so that we can progress towards creating a 'New Bangladesh' by conducting a smooth election,' Mr. Yunus said. He also paid tribute to the victims who died in the recent crash of an air force jet in Dhaka's Milestone College and expressed gratitude to Singapore, India and China for helping the survivors of that incident. In a statement shared with The Hindu, the Awami League described the July Declaration as a 'heinous attempt to erase the history and values' of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. 'It has not offered anything to the protesting job seekers, who were misled into a regime change coup. Bangladesh had one declaration only, and that was our declaration of independence. Nothing will replace that,' said the Awami League in the statement sent to The Hindu.

Banke Bihari temple ordinance for administration, not to interfere with religious rights: UP to SC

The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it did not intend to interfere with any religious rights through the 2025 Shri Banke Bihari Ji Temple Trust Ordinance, Live Law reported. The ordinance, passed earlier this year, allowed the state government to take over the management of the Banke Bihari temple in Mathura district's Vrindavan. It proposed the creation of a statutory trust with several state government officials as ex-officio trustees. The temple has historically been managed privately. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi has been hearing petitions against the ordinance. On Monday, the bench questioned the 'tearing hurry' with which the state government had promulgated the law. During the proceedings on Tuesday, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, representing the state government, said that the ordinance would soon be placed before the Assembly for ratification, The Hindu reported. He added that the ordinance was aimed at improving the temple's administration. 'State never intended nor it intends to interfere with any of the religious rights of any of the parties,' Live Law quoted Nataraj as saying. 'It is only with regard to the secular activities, that is, for better administration of temple that ordinance has been issued.' Nataraj also told the bench that the temple gets around 20,000 to 30,000 devotees daily and as many as two to three lakh on weekends. 'There is a requirement for better facilities, better administration,' The Hindu quoted him as saying. 'There has been mismanagement of funds.' Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the current temple management, objected to the submission that funds were allegedly being mismanaged. 'There was no allegation of mismanagement of funds at any stage,' the newspaper quoted Sibal as saying. After going through a proposal submitted by the state government, the bench listed the matter for Friday to allow the petitioners to give their suggestions in the matter, Live Law reported. It further asked both sides to give their recommendations for the appointment of a retired High Court judge to head a committee to oversee the management of the temple as an interim measure. SC on UP government's 'clandestine' approach On Monday, the bench had criticised the Uttar Pradesh government for acting in a 'clandestine manner' to secure permission to use temple funds for a corridor project through an application in a civil dispute. The court was referring to a May 15 verdict that allowed the government to use temple funds to acquire five acres of land around the temple to develop a corridor that is estimated to cost Rs 500 crore. The Supreme Court had modified a 2023 Allahabad High Court order, which had permitted the corridor's development but barred the use of Rs 262.5 crore from the temple fund. The May 15 permission was granted on the condition that the acquired land be registered in the name of the deity. The bench, on Monday, verbally proposed to recall the directions in the May 15 verdict.

Worst movie ever? Ice Cube's 'War of the Worlds' gets 0% on Rotten Tomatoes

'War of the Worlds' on Prime Video, the reboot of the sci-fi movie, has landed an infamous 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Ice Cube stars in 'War of the Worlds' alongside Eva Longoria.(X/@ripemocanadian) At the time of writing, the site shows a 0% rating based on 12 reviews. The movie managed a meagre 3.2 out of a possible 10 on IMDb as well. Both of these are review aggregator sites, with Rotten Tomatoes allocating scores based on audience and critic reviews separately. The film stars Ice Cube, of NWA fame. Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria appears alongside the rapper. The movie's logline is 'a thrilling out-of-this-world adventure that is filled with present-day themes of technology, surveillance, and privacy.' 'War of the Worlds' is adapted from the 1898 novel by HG Wells, and Ice Cube plays Will Radford, a government analyst who finds his life upended when aliens invade earth. For context, the 1953 adaptation of Wells' work has a 89 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7 out of 10 on IMDb, while the 2005 one, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, has a 76 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb. What critics are saying about 'War of the Worlds' (2025)? Variety, which called the movie a 'disaster' was especially harsh. 'Even with a Prime subscription, you have to sit through two minutes of ads to watch 90 more of what amounts to a feature-length commercial for all things Amazon,' the critic said. The ABC4 Utah critic, meanwhile said 'Told entirely through screens and digital devices, this 'screenlife' thriller tries to bring H.G. Wells' classic into the tech era, but not only fails at being entertaining, but fails at being a movie itself.' A viewer also slammed the film, saying 'How and why was this made? As other reviewers stated, it's loaded with Amazon product placement and extremely unwatchable. The terrible script and dialogue is too cringe for the usual B-movie laughs and patronizing. Save yourself and give this a hard pass.' Social media was no kinder, with one individual sharing a screenshot of a flash drive seen on the Amazon product page, and stated this was 'an actual shot' from the film. 'This new #waroftheworlds movie might be the worst movie i have seen in years,' another commented. 'The film's tagline — 'It's worse than you think' — sums up the entire movie', quipped another. Directed by Rich Lee, the movie was released by Universal Pictures on Amazon Prime Video on July 30, 2025.
