Israeli army says intercepted missile fired from Yemen
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said Sunday it had intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, where Huthi rebels have been launching strikes on Israel during its war against Hamas.
'Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted,' the Israeli army said in a Telegram post.
The Huthis have regularly fired missiles and drones at Israel since the war in Gaza broke out in October 2023, following an attack on Israel by the Huthis' Palestinian ally Hamas.
On Friday, Israel bombed the Huthi-held Red Sea ports of Hodeida and Salif following three missile attacks in as many days. It threatened to target the Huthi leadership if the attacks continued.
The Huthi administration said the strikes 'will be met with a painful response', according to the Huthi-run Saba news agency.
The Huthis, who control swathes of Yemen, have launched missiles and drones targeting Israel and Red Sea shipping throughout the Gaza war, saying they act in solidarity with Palestinians.
Their firing on the shipping route drew retaliatory strikes by the United States.
However in early May, the United States sealed a ceasefire with the Huthis that did not include Israel.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Naimah Khalid, the widow of former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, will challenge the court order obtained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to freeze RM758 million worth of assets abroad linked to her and her family. Naimah claimed that the assets were lawfully acquired and that her lawyers would immediately move to set aside the freezing order, which was granted ex parte. 'I will challenge this order to defend what should never be taken from any of us: our rights, our voice, and a country governed by law, not by fear. 'Let there be no doubt that I will fight this politically motivated, reckless, vindictive and lawless action, through all legal means at my disposal,' she said in a statement today. She argued that no reasonable person would say the order was in accordance with fairness or the rules of natural justice, accusing MACC of obtaining it by ambush. The Kuala Lumpur High Court reportedly granted MACC's application to freeze £132 million (RM758.2 million) worth of assets in London belonging to Naimah and her family. The assets include two commercial buildings, five luxury residences, and one bank account, Utusan Malaysia reported. Naimah alleged that the move was part of a 'long and continuous smear campaign' against her family by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki since late 2022. 'No crime of any kind has ever been proven against Daim. No charges were brought in his lifetime, and none after his death,' she said, adding that the Anti-Money Laundering Act cited by MACC required a serious offence to be proven first. She warned that failure to push back against such actions would embolden those in power to act with impunity. 'A line has been crossed. And if we do not resist, there may soon be no lines left at all. Then no Malaysian will be safe from the reach of unchecked power,' she said. Daim was charged in January last year with failing to declare assets to MACC, including interests in 38 companies, 19 land plots in five states, six properties, two unit trust accounts and seven luxury vehicles. MACC said he had asked for five deadline extensions but still failed to comply. After Daim's death on Nov 13 last year, the prosecution withdrew the charges, and the court granted an order discharging and acquitting him. Naimah also faces an asset declaration charge. Sabah China Chamber of Commerce re-elects Frankie for third term

Held at the Sabah Golf and Country Club in Bukit Padang, the session saw strong participation, with 78 members in attendance. A total of 29 committee members were elected unopposed for the 2025–2028 term, reflecting unity and trust within the Chamber. Gaza ceasefire push set to fail at UN Security Council as Israel's ally US expected to veto and block end to fighting
NEW YORK, June 4 — The UN Security Council will vote Wednesday on a resolution calling for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access in Gaza, a measure expected to fail due to a US veto. It is the 15-member body's first vote on the subject since November, when the United States — a key Israeli ally — also blocked a text calling for an end to fighting. The new resolution, seen by AFP, 'demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties.' It also calls for the 'immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups.' Underlining a 'catastrophic humanitarian situation' in the Palestinian territory, the resolution additionally demands the lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. It will be put to vote at 4pm Wednesday (2000 GMT), but several diplomats indicated to AFP that they expected the United States to wield its veto power. They added that the representatives from the 10 elected members of the Council, who will introduce the text, tried in vain to negotiate with the American side. Israel has faced growing international pressure to end its war in Gaza, which was triggered by the unprecedented October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israeli soil. That scrutiny has increased over flailing aid distribution in Gaza, which Israel blocked for more than two months before allowing a limited number of UN vehicles to enter in mid-May. But that, the United Nations said, was not enough to meet the humanitarian needs. A US-backed relief effort called the Gaza Humanitarian Fund has also come under criticism for going against long-standing aid principles by coordinating relief efforts with a military belligerent. Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, on Tuesday urged the Council to act.
