Sabah China Chamber of Commerce re-elects Frankie for third term

Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 Text Size: Frankie Liew Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) reaffirmed its confidence in Datuk Frankie Liew, re-electing him as President for a third consecutive term during its Annual General Meeting (AGM), recently. Held at the Sabah Golf and Country Club in Bukit Padang, the session saw strong participation, with 78 members in attendance. A total of 29 committee members were elected unopposed for the 2025–2028 term, reflecting unity and trust within the Chamber. The new committee will convene within two weeks to finalise leadership roles in accordance with SCCC's constitution. 'I am humbled by our members' trust. We will continue strengthening Sabah's economic ties, both regionally and globally,' said Frankie, expressing gratitude for the renewed mandate. Key leaders, including Brett Chua, Datuk Jonathan Koh and Datuk Simon Teoh, were among the newly elected committee members. In a major development, SCCC confirmed a business delegation to Zhengzhou, China, from Sept 24–28, for the International Business and Trade Expo. The mission aims to showcase Sabah's potential in agriculture, tourism, logistics, halal products and green technology while facilitating partnerships through MoUs and networking sessions. Ukraine says it shot down Russian Su-35 fighter jet
KYIV: Ukraine's air forces shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet on Saturday morning, the Ukrainian military said. Petronas layoffs driven by global challenges, not Petros issue: Fadillah

KUCHING: Petroliam Nasional Bhd's (Petronas) move to trim its workforce stems from global challenges and is not connected to the national oil firm's issues with Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros). Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the restructuring process is necessary amid the decline in crude oil prices. Advertisement He also plans to meet with Petronas to get more details on the restructuring process. 'That is why Petronas has to relook its entire operation. I'm planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of layoffs can be reduced, if not avoided,' he told reporters attending the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here today. On June 5, Petronas president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz reportedly said the national oil firm is cutting 10 per cent of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly due to falling crude prices. Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process currently stands at around 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. Advertisement On May 21, the federal and state governments reached an understanding on matters involving Petronas and Petros. According to the joint declaration, Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to the company in Malaysia, under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA 1974) and its regulations. Any agreements and arrangements between Petronas and its subsidiaries with third parties for the purpose of liquefied natural gas (LNG) sales from upstream operations through to LNG exports to foreign parties remain unaffected. I was blacklisted from Sabah last week, now banned from leaving Malaysia: Fahmi Reza

In a statement posted on his social media, Fahmi recounted arriving at KLIA2 at around 7.30am to catch a 9.35am flight for a short two-day trip to attend a concert featuring South Korean band Slant and Singaporean act Sial. Advertisement But at the international departure counter, Immigration officers told him he had been flagged and needed to wait at their office. 'I was asked to wait while they checked with TCO (Travel Control Office/Order). Then they took my passport and IC for photocopying. They also wanted printed copies of my boarding pass and e-ticket, even though I had them on my phone,' he wrote, adding that with only 10 minutes left before boarding, an airport staff member helped him get the documents printed at a hotel nearby. When he returned to Immigration with the documents, Fahmi said an officer told him, 'Bukit Aman has not given clearance for you to leave the country.' He said no explanation was provided and he was escorted out of the departure area. Advertisement Fahmi is well known for his satirical illustrations that often critique political leaders and institutions. He believes the ban is linked to his artwork criticising the recent appointment of former Sabah chief minister Tun Musa Aman as the state's new Yang di-Pertua Negeri. Just weeks earlier, on May 29, the Sabah Immigration Department had denied Fahmi entry into the state under Section 65(1)(a) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. He said he was flown back to Kuala Lumpur the same day without further explanation. That incident followed his earlier arrest by Sabah police in February this year over another satirical post. Authorities had opened investigations under the Sedition Act for allegedly insulting the royal institution. 'Last week I was blacklisted from entering Sabah. This week, I'm blacklisted from leaving the country,' he wrote.
