Vegan restaurant chain files for bankruptcy

Daily Mail15-05-2025
Planta has become the latest restaurant chain to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The restaurant, which has served celebrities like Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber, declared bankruptcy this week. Planta listed between $10 and $50 million in liabilities compared with $50,000 and $100,000 in assets.
Known for its upscale vegan cuisine, Planta was founded by CEO Steven Salm and chef David Lee in Toronto, Canada, in 2016. Planta expanded quickly, and its Florida restaurants became celebrity hotspots over the years. Part of the fame came after Pharrell Williams posted an Instagram video of him eating at its Miami Beach location in 2018.
The company lists 18 locations on its website, in Florida, Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Toronto, Restaurant Business reported. Planta's sales skyrocketed year after year, and finished 2024 with $46 million in revenue. But the lingering impact of the pandemic, consumer slowdown and rising prices meant the hotspot fell behind on lease payments, ultimately resulting in its bankruptcy filing.
Planta was forced to close restaurants and increase costs after beginning to rely heavily on third-party delivery, Restaurant Business reported. The company was not able to bounce back, leading to rising food and menu prices between 2023 and 2024, which hurt the chain and drained profits. These factors and more are what CEO Steven Salm revealed were reasons behind Planta's 'irrecoverable damage.'
Planta has not secured debt, but it has received funds through a convertible note from Anchorage Capital Group, which means that debt could be converted to equity if unpaid by a certain date. The chain has not yet announced plans to close any of its restaurants. The company's initial success came amid a surge of interest in plant-based diets and meat alternatives.
That trend has struggled more recently, however. Researchers have found that plant-based meat products offer no 'clear benefit' for heart health . Kevin Hart tried his hand at operating a vegan burger chain called Hart's House, which debuted in 2022.
But the comedian's restaurant venture was a bust, and all four locations were closed by 2024, much to the happiness of several diners. Another health-conscious eatery that bit the dust was EVOS burger chain, which closed its last restaurant in April. But places specializing in plant-based offerings aren't the only restaurants that have become sinking ships this year.
Hooters filed for bankruptcy in March, and Bar Louie abruptly closed restaurants before filing for the second time in five years. Other chains in trouble this year include On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina, the family-favorite restaurant Bertucci's.

Costco customers give verdict on door receipt checkers

By They're often treated like mall cops and met with eye-rolls — but Costco's door receipt checkers may be doing more than just slowing you down on the way out. Turns out, the employees many shoppers love to hate are actually saving people money. Costco members are sharing surprising stories of how receipt checkers have caught errors and saved them cash — sometimes more than $40 in a single visit. One viral Reddit post praised a worker who noticed a shopper had been charged for a three-pack of houseplants at $16.99 each, even though they only grabbed two. 'At the exit when my receipt was checked, the employee hesitated and said, 'You only got two plants but you paid for a 3-pack,' the shopper wrote. 'He called someone over, refunded the extra, and I got the third plant. THIS is why they check receipts.' Other Costco members quickly piled on with their own examples: 'They've caught accidental double scans before — saved me $45 last time,' one shopper said. Another wrote:'I missed an item and was about to walk out without paying — they sent me back and let me keep it free,' another wrote. Even when mistakes slip through, shoppers said customer service is quick to fix them. Some noted these errors are easy to miss in the moment — especially during big hauls where the final total already feels high. While some still grumble that receipt checks feel nosy or unnecessary, many Costco regulars are starting to see them differently: not just as security guards stopping theft, but as a final line of defense against checkout mistakes. Employees say that's part of the point. Receipt checks help prevent shrink, the industry term for lost inventory — whether from theft, mis-scans, or human error. And by reducing that loss, Costco keeps its famously low prices intact. Legal experts also say the practice is all above board — membership terms include consent to exit receipt checks. Not everyone is a fan. Shoppers have been known to debate the practice online, with some arguing Costco should simply add more checkout staff instead of relying on exit policing. Costco is often in the news. Shoppers threatened to boycott Costco earlier this year after the chain swapped Pepsi for Coca-Cola drinks . Other customers have complained about price hikes at food courts. Slow-moving shoppers traveling around in groups is another of Costco shoppers' biggest gripes. Costco shoppers also debating new food court items or complaining about limits on gold bars. Meanwhile, a little-known policy is also going vital. Costco shoppers have long loved the chain's famous free samples — but few knew the real rules.

Taiwan cabinet: Taiwan-US tariff talks complete, pending U.S. decision-making process

TAIPEI, July 31 (Reuters) - Taiwan and the U.S. have completed talks on tariff technicalities and have reached consensus on issues including non-tariff trade barriers, with the result pending the U.S. decision-making process, Taiwan's cabinet said on Thursday. Goods sent from Taiwan to the U.S. were targeted for tariffs of 32% by U.S. President Donald Trump when he announced his so-called "reciprocal" tariffs in April, but he later declared a 90-day pause on the plan. Taiwan has been in tariff talks with Washington since the announcement. "Investment and purchase issues have also been discussed," said a spokesperson, adding that both sides have discussed a joint statement. A trade delegation led by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun had gone through four rounds of negotiations with U.S. officials, including U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, according to a statement issued by Taiwan's cabinet. Taiwan has been seeking to strengthen its trade ties with major partners, particularly the U.S., Taiwan's second-largest trading partner after China, amid growing geopolitical and economic challenges. The outcome of the discussions could play a key role in shaping the island's future trade strategy and its position in the global supply chain, and is crucial to Taiwan's export-driven economy.

Powell dismisses Trump's criticism as fed holds rates steady

The Federal Reserve defied Donald Trump once again last night and refused to cut interest rates as the US economy bounced back. The central bank – whose chairman Jerome Powell (pictured) has been urged by the US President to slash rates to 1 per cent – instead held them at between 4.25 per cent and 4.5 per cent. The Fed was split, however, with two insiders appointed by Trump calling for a cut in the largest dissenting vote for more than 30 years. It came just hours after figures showed the US economy grew at an annualised rate of 3 per cent in the second quarter – the equivalent of around 0.75 per cent on a quarterly basis. That followed a 0.5 per cent annualised contraction in the first quarter. Trump took to social media to declare the number to be 'way better than expected' – though analysts cautioned the 'sharp fluctuations' in the data are the result of the 'tariff dispute' causing 'distortions in foreign trade'. The President went on to urge Powell to immediately cut rates, adding: 'No Inflation ! Let people buy, and refinance, their homes!' It marked just the latest attack on Powell by Trump, and followed a televised clash during a presidential tour of the Fed last week when the central bank chief was quizzed over the cost of renovations. Isaac Stell of the investment service Wealth Club said: 'Despite the sustained pressure, Powell and his deputies have once again defied the President's wishes and chosen independence over political capitulation.' But while the Fed did not cut rates, last night's vote was the first since 1993 in which two members of the Fed's seven-person Washington-based board of governors have dissented against the majority. That stoked debate about how Trump's public pressure to cut rates has threatened the independence of the central bank. Both dissenters – Michelle Bowman and Christopher Waller – were appointed by Trump and called for rates to be cut by a quarter of a percentage point to between 4 per cent and 4.25 per cent. Waller has been mentioned as a possible successor to Powell when his term expires in May next year. Analysts cast doubt over the underlying health of the economy following the apparently upbeat GDP figures. Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at financial markets research group FWD Bonds, said: 'The economy is not in a recession is the good news. The bad news is that this is not a report of robust growth.'
