Microsoft opens first Indonesia data centre in Jakarta
Microsoft has officially launched its first data centre in Indonesia, a major investment that strengthens the country's digital infrastructure and positions it as a growing hub for cloud technology in Southeast Asia.
The Indonesia Central Cloud Region, unveiled on Monday in Jakarta, was inaugurated by Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, who represented President Prabowo Subianto at the ceremony.
Government officials hailed the launch as a turning point in the country's digital transformation. Meutya said the facility demonstrates global confidence in Indonesia's tech policies and readiness to manage advanced systems such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
'This is a testament to our commitment to digital sovereignty and technological progress,' Meutya said at the event.
Microsoft's investment is expected to contribute US$2.5 billion to the economy and create 60,000 jobs by 2028. The company also plans to train 1 million Indonesians in digital skills, with over 840,000 already engaged in AI capability-building programmes.
Indonesia now ranks as the second-largest data centre market in Southeast Asia, with 84 facilities, just behind Singapore's 99. Microsoft's entry adds momentum to a trend led by major tech firms, including Amazon and Google, which have also expanded their cloud operations in the region.
Southeast Asia remains an underpenetrated market, with cloud infrastructure still lagging behind mature economies. Indonesia's renewable energy potential and strategic location provide a compelling alternative to land-constrained Singapore.
Regulatory pressure to localise data storage is a major driver of the region's digital infrastructure boom. Countries like Indonesia are enforcing laws that require in-country data processing, prompting global firms to establish local operations.
The Southeast Asian data centre market is forecast to grow from $10.23 billion in 2023 to $17.73 billion by 2029. Microsoft's $1.7 billion investment underscores how data centres act as economic catalysts, stimulating job creation and supporting a wider ecosystem of industries.
The region's monthly data usage is projected to triple by 2025, fuelling further expansion of cloud infrastructure and related services.

European shares log second weekly gain, focus on Trump-Putin talks
FRANKFURT: European shares came off multi-month highs on Friday, as declines in heavyweight tech and financial shares offset gains from some corporate earnings, while investors monitored a crucial US-Russia summit. The pan-European STOXX 600 index closed 0.1% lower, after hitting a near five-month high earlier in the session. Investor focus was on a meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska later in the day that investors hope could pave the way for a resolution of the Ukraine conflict. Trump said he would not negotiate on behalf of Ukraine and would let Kyiv decide whether to engage in territorial swaps with Russia. Analysts at Jefferies said that any progress towards de-escalation could benefit consumer, construction, materials and growth-oriented sectors, which have been relatively underinvested in Europe. Aerospace and defence stocks fell 0.8% ahead of the summit. Steve Sosnick, chief market analyst at Interactive Brokers, said: 'Barring something truly outrageous - positive or negative - markets are not necessarily treating it (US-Russia summit) as important from a market point of view.' Technology stocks fell 0.6%, weighing on the STOXX 600 index. ASML, the world's biggest supplier of computer chip-making equipment, fell 1% after US peer Applied Materials lowered its fourth-quarter earnings forecast due to weak demand in China and impacts from tariff uncertainty. The Dutch firm had issued a similar warning in mid-July, saying it might not achieve its 2026 growth forecast. Chip stocks BE Semiconductor and ASMI dropped 3.3% and 2.8%, respectively. On the flip side, miners were the top gainers, adding 0.8%. Antofagasta rose 1.2% after a jump in half-year core earnings on Thursday, helping peers, including Anglo American. Healthcare shares, which have taken a beating this year from uncertainty around Trump's pharma tariffs, were on track for a recovery. The healthcare index logged its seventh consecutive session of gains, its longest streak since late January.

He was speaking to the media after attending the 'Mera Brand Pakistan' Expo, organized by the Pakistan Business Forum at the Lahore Expo Centre. The expo featured stalls of national brands and high-quality local products and continued for two days. Speaking to the media on the occasion, the DG Food Authority said that a Business Facilitation Center has been established to promote business networking and raise awareness about food safety. At this centre, food business operators are provided with guidance regarding the food industry. He added that the Punjab Food Authority is extending full cooperation to the business community in matters related to food exports. He emphasized that through research and development, Pakistani products should be exported worldwide, and by producing goods according to international standards, exports can be significantly increased. The DG stated that there are ample opportunities for investment and start-ups in Pakistan's halal food export sector. He highlighted that the participation of over 200,000 people in this impactful exhibition is a great achievement. Enhancing production quality and strengthening consumer trust is the need of the hour, and there is a firm commitment to raising local brands to international standards. He remarked that such business events serve as milestones in promoting national products and strengthening the business community. 'The day is not far when our products will be recognized worldwide under the 'Made in Pakistan' label,' he said, adding that bringing together major brands and the business community under one platform is commendable. The DG further said that the aim of the Food Authority is to promote a healthy lifestyle and a culture of quality food among the public, while the 'Mera Brand Pakistan' Expo will play a positive role in the country's economy. Meanwhile, the enforcement teams of the Punjab Food Authority have lodged two FIRs against food suppliers involved in preparing fake milk and selling meat from dead goats during a crackdown carried out across the district under the directions of PFA Director General Muhammad Asim Javed. Food safety teams discarded 3,000 litres of fake milk, two dead goats and two maunds of hazardous meat during the operation. They also confiscated a milk supplier's vehicle, a supplier's motorcycle 488 litres of oil 175kg of powder and four pumps used in the adulteration process. All recovered substandard products were discarded on the spot. DG said that teams intercepted a motorcycle in the rural area of Dhariyan carrying dead goats to be processed as meat. A veterinary specialist examined the animals and confirmed that they had died before slaughter making the meat unfit for human consumption. Meat was discarded while the motorcycle and supplier were handed over to police. He said that on Raiwind Road, teams uncovered a fake milk production unit manufacturing synthetic milk using powder, vegetable ghee and other prohibited substances. On site tests failed to meet the required standards. The supplier, who was caught distributing a white liquid in place of milk without maintaining essential records or documentation, was booked under five legal sections.
