Human behaviour changes according to circumstances, and we can see that during the holy month of Ramadhan. This is one of the important lessons we can learn from the holy month that sees millions of people fast from dawn to dusk.
Food and water, factors that are essential, are often taken for granted on normal days. Then comes Ramadhan when people refrain from water and food until it is time to break the fast. This is an opportunity to understand the value of water to quench thirst. We begin to value food as a source; we appreciate the farmers and the people who cook it. Most importantly, we are able to practice empathy.
We understand the significance of food in providing us with the required energy to function. Our brain, our mind, and our body need it. So imagine the plight of people who are deprived of it. That is deprived of proper food not just for a month, but as a regular reality.
The time of Iftar is when the fast is broken, and it becomes a special moment, especially when everyone gathers together. Breaking the fast together, praying together, and have food together creates a unique bond in a world of individualism. The beauty of mass Iftars held in Oman is the fact that most of the people may not even know each other. Expatriates from different countries and different cultural backgrounds sit together and have the same food. Another feature is sitting on the ground. Many mosques in Oman become important venues for people to gather for Iftars. Some people find the occasion a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the welfare of society by providing cooked food and fresh fruits.
Rusayil roundabout has a story to convey during this year of fasting. The round has been seeing traffic jams for longer periods during this Ramadhan.
Lt Col Saif bin Ahmed al Ramadhani, Director of the Executive Office of the National Committee for Road Safety, explained that this year more and more people are choosing to go to their hometowns on a daily basis during the holy month.
The reason?
He explained that people are eager to spend the Iftar moments with their family members. Before, the trend was to spend the weekdays in Muscat and then go home for weekends.
Eating together, whether with family, friends, or colleagues, has numerous benefits that extend beyond simply sharing a meal. Some of the key advantages are enhanced social bonds, a sense of belonging, improved communication skills, listening skills, better mental health, stress reduction, mindful eating, passing down traditions, exploring culinary practices, and most importantly, mindfulness and gratitude.
Attending community Iftars brings in strengthened relationships because shared meals foster connection. Eating together allows individuals to engage in conversation, share stories, and build stronger emotional ties. Regular communal meals create a feeling of community and belonging, which is essential for emotional well-being.
The gatherings are perfect places to practice conversations leading to improved interpersonal interactions. Discussions during meals encourage active listening and attention to others, which are vital social skills. These are great opportunities for the youth.
The gatherings are great to reduce loneliness because communal eating can combat feelings of isolation and loneliness, enhancing overall mental health. Another wonderful initiative to indulge in is to be a volunteer.
There is more to sharing a meal because it can provide a sense of comfort and relaxation, reducing stress levels and allowing for a break from daily pressures.
Another advantage to eating together is that it encourages more mindful eating practices, promoting awareness of food choices and portion sizes.
Communal gatherings could encourage balanced food intake, as families and groups often prepare balanced meals, leading to healthier diets compared to solo eating, which may lean towards foods of convenience.
Shared meals offer an opportunity to pass down cultural and family traditions related to food, fostering a sense of identity and continuity at the same time as a platform to try different dishes together and enjoy diverse dishes and promote cultural understanding.

Yousef bin Hamad al Rahbi, Director of the Astronomical Affairs Department at the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, emphasised that astronomical calculations are crucial but must be confirmed by actual crescent moon sighting. The department highlighted the importance of crescent moon sighting in Islam, as it determines significant religious days such as the start and end of Ramadhan, Eid Al Fitr, Eid Al Adha, sacred months like Muharram and Dhul Hijjah. Eid Al Adha will begin on the tenth day of the month, following the day of Arafah on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. Abdulwahab al Busaidy, an astronomer and member of Oman Astronomical Society, explained that the crescent moon will be visible at 07:02 in the morning, with the sun setting at 06:37 in Muscat. The crescent moon will set at 07:24, giving a 36-minute window for moon observation. "Accordingly, the crescent moon will be above the horizon by 8 degrees. In light of all this, we presume that the first day of the Dhul Hijjah will be Wednesday and the first day of Eid Al Adha will be on Friday June 6 for Oman and neighbouring countries as well," Al Busaidy said.

"Finding ways to celebrate safely while still honouring traditions will ensure that future generations continue to experience the warmth and joy associated with Eid. Here, I mean we need to teach our children to value family bonds," said Amour al Tauqi, a father of four. "As we gather with our loved ones each year during this joyous occasion, we reaffirm our commitment to nurturing these relationships that are vital for our emotional well-being and cultural identity," he added. Family gatherings in Oman hold significant cultural, social and emotional importance, particularly during holiday seasons such as Eid and the winter months when the weather is mild and conducive to outdoor activities. These gatherings are not merely social events; they play a crucial role in reinforcing familial bonds and preserving cultural traditions. They felt sadness bidding farewell to the days of fasting, but also excitement looking forward to enjoying a one-week holiday for Eid Al Fitr. The holiday started on Sunday and will extend through April 5, providing them with ample time to celebrate this significant occasion with family and friends. Eid Al Fitr is celebrated with great enthusiasm across Oman. "The day typically begins with early morning prayers at mosques or designated prayer grounds. These prayers symbolise unity among Muslims, as they stand together regardless of social status or background," said Ali al Abri, who is eager to celebrate Eid with his family. While traditional Eid activities differ from culture to culture, the first and most significant of these is offering early morning prayers, for which everyone is up before the sun rises. Traditionally, families gather for large meals featuring special dishes prepared specifically for the occasion. Omani culture has its unique traditions associated with Eid celebrations. Families often wear new clothes for the occasion and exchange greetings like 'Eid Mubarak", which translates to 'Blessed Eid". Children receive gifts known as Eidiya, small amounts of money given by elders, which they often use to buy sweets or toys. The essence of Eid lies not only in celebration but also in reflection on personal growth achieved during Ramadhan. As communities come together in gratitude and festivity, they look forward to continuing their spiritual journeys beyond this blessed month. 'While saying goodbye to Ramadhan evokes feelings of sadness for its departure, it simultaneously heralds the joyous arrival of Eid Al Fitr, a time for celebration, community bonding and renewed commitment to faith," said Najeeb al Balushi, a private sector employee. In addition to prayers and family gatherings, many Omani families prepare traditional dishes such as Shuwa (slow-cooked meat) served with rice and various side dishes. This communal aspect of sharing food reflects the spirit of generosity that characterises Eid celebrations. In Oman, as elsewhere, there is an emphasis on fulfilling obligations such as giving zakat (charity) before Eid. Zakat serves not only as a means of helping those in need but also as a way to purify one's wealth and soul after a month of fasting. The act of giving zakat reinforces community bonds and ensures that everyone can partake in the celebrations of Eid Al Fitr. "I remind myself before reminding others that zakat is a form of charity to be given to the poor during or before the end of Ramadhan. This is an obligatory charity on every able Muslim. He said that this year, too, the world is witnessing the suffering of Muslim brothers and sisters across the globe. "It is our duty to ensure we do our part by giving zakat so that they can also celebrate Eid," he said. Bidding farewell to the days of fasting, there is a sense of sadness at the departure of Ramadhan even as we prepare to celebrate Eid and for having successfully achieved the month's purpose.
