NC Attorney General launches initiative to deter property theft, aid rebuilding
RALEIGH, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – The 'Safe to Rebuild' initiative officially launched Monday in an effort to deter property theft and support North Carolinians repairing and rebuilding homes and businesses after Hurricane Helene.
We're sending a clear message to North Carolinians – you should feel safe to rebuild in western North Carolina, and our office and law enforcement partners are working to keep it that way. Anyone who tries to steal property, rip off homeowners, or steal from people is going to face the consequences and be brought to justice.

NCDOJ has heard concerns from small business owners in western North Carolina about fears of potential looting and property theft as they order expensive equipment to rebuild their businesses.
The office has also heard about potential opportunities for contracting and home repair fraud as homeowners repair their homes and properties.
The Department of Justice says they will be taking a close look at all complaints involving property and contractor fraud in western North Carolina. People can file complaints and learn more about hiring verified and reputable companies at www.ncdoj.gov/safetorebuild.

The NC Department of Transportation released a graphic detailing all the problems with the scam message. This DMV scam is the latest form of smishing that attempts to obtain revealing or sensitive information from individuals. It provides a fake link to pay the fines, creates a sense of urgency, and asks the recipient to reply 'Y' to the message, copy links into a browser, or confirm personal information. If you receive a text message from the DMV or any other state agency that demands money, the Federal Trade Commission recommends the following: Do not respond to the text or click any links. The DMV would not ask for your information or money by text. Report the text to the Federal Trade Commission at and/or file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM) to help your provider identify and block similar messages. President Donald Trump responded to the sudden return of Salvadoran illegal and alleged gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia, saying, "he's a bad guy" and that the courts will "show how horrible this guy is." Trump appeared unbothered by Abrego Garcia's return on Friday afternoon, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that the Department of Justice made the decision and that soon the world will see how "horrible" a person he is. Trump expressed confidence in the Doj and its case against Abrego Garcia. "The DOJ made a decision," he said, adding, "I think their decisions have been very, very good." Senator Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who led the charge among Democrats to push for Abrego Garcia's return, released a statement after news of the return broke, saying, "For months the Trump Administration flouted the Supreme Court and our Constitution. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Attorney General Jeff Jackson is warning North Carolinians to be on the lookout for text scams impersonating the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and demanding that people pay an outstanding traffic ticket or face severe actions. NC Department of Transportation warns residents of DMV text scam The Department of Justice is receiving a higher volume of calls and complaints from consumers about this scam. These scams are targeting residents in multiple states and warn that if the recipient does not click on a link to make a payment, they may face suspended driving privileges, suspended vehicle registration, or ultimately be prosecuted. If you receive one of these scam texts: Do not click on any links. Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM). Block or delete the number. Report it to the Federal Trade Commission at and the North Carolina Department of Justice at If you're unsure whether an email, text, or letter from the NCDMV is legitimate, you should contact the agency directly at 919-715-7000. Unfortunately, scammers took note of the toll text scams that were everywhere a couple months ago and are now using the same playbook for these traffic text scams.
