Apple, Samsung may replace Plus models with ultra-thin smartphones: Report

Samsung has reportedly begun development on the Galaxy S26 Edge, its second-generation ultra-thin flagship. According to a report by 9To5Google, citing The Elec, the company plans to replace the 'Plus' model in its Galaxy S series line-up with the Edge variant starting next year. Apple is also expected to adopt a similar approach, potentially replacing the iPhone Plus with a new 'iPhone Air' model.
For those who don't know, Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 Edge on May 13. The phone stands out for its ultra-slim titanium build, measuring just 5.8mm thick and weighing 163g—even though it features a display size similar to the Galaxy S25 Plus. It is powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and includes a 200MP primary sensor, which marks a camera upgrade over the Plus variant. However, the ultra-thin design comes with trade-offs: a smaller battery and the absence of a telephoto lens.
Apple, meanwhile, is expected to debut the iPhone 17 Air later this year. The device is rumoured to take inspiration from the ultra-slim iPad Pro design and is likely to replace the iPhone Plus in the company's future line-up. The iPhone 17 Air is tipped to feature a 6.6-inch display and support for ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate. Similar to Samsung's Edge model, it's expected to offer fewer camera sensors, with early reports suggesting a single rear camera set-up. A smaller battery is also expected compared to the current Plus model.
That said, Apple may have an advantage on the software front. A recent Bloomberg report revealed that Apple is developing a new AI-powered battery optimisation feature for the upcoming version of iOS. The feature will reportedly monitor usage patterns and adjust settings in real time to extend battery life—potentially addressing concerns around battery life in its thinner iPhone model.

Tim Cook reveals shocking shift in how Americans are buying Apple products this year

Tim Cook said something surprising – Apple CEO Tim Cook told investors on Thursday that Americans changed how they were buying iPhones and Macs earlier this year. People rushed to buy in April – Many customers panicked in April and went to Apple Stores to upgrade their devices early, afraid prices might go up due to new tariffs. Tariffs were the big reason – The fear came from President Donald Trump's tariff war with China. Tariff rates increased on Chinese goods, and since Apple makes many products there, people thought prices would rise soon, according to the report by Business Insider. Foxconn sells Lordstown car factory for $375 million

Taiwan's Foxconn said on Monday it had struck a deal to sell the Lordstown former car factory in Ohio for $375 million, including its machinery, but said it would continue to use the site to make a broader range of products aligned with its strategic priorities. Foxconn, which makes data center products for Nvidia and assembles iPhones for Apple, did not elaborate on products to be manufactured at the plant, but said the cloud and networking product business in particularly showed "significant growth". A source with direct knowledge of the matter said the Ohio site would support artificial intelligence data centers , without specifying details. Foxconn purchased the plant, a former General Motors small-car factory named after the town in Ohio where it is based, in 2022 from now-bankrupt U.S. electric vehicle startup Lordstown Motors Corp for $230 million, as part of its efforts to expand into EVs. Foxconn also invested in Lordstown and the companies started making electric pickup trucks there. But the partnership later soured, with Lordstown going out of business and suing Foxconn. Foxconn said on Monday it sold the factory to an "existing business partner", without giving details. It also said the company remained committed to automotive customers in the U.S. and said it would be able to rapidly ramp up automotive production to meet customer demand when required. Foxconn has expanded beyond its traditional role as an iPhone assembler. Last week it formed a strategic partnership with industrial motor maker TECO Electric & Machinery to build data centres.
