When Shah Rukh Khan almost made his Malayalam debut to steal Juhi Chawla from Mohanlal and Mammootty: ‘He was supposed to appear at the end and…'

Shah Rukh Khan is the undisputed Baadshah of Bollywood, who has been reigning over the industry for more than three decades. From Baazigar (1993), Darr (1993), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Mohabbatein (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Chak De! India (2007), Om Shanti Om (2007) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), to the recent Pathaan (2023) and Jawan (2023), he has delivered some of Hindi cinema's most memorable blockbusters. Today, he ranks among the biggest movie superstars globally, with fans across the world who know his films and iconic dialogues by heart.
But did you know that King Khan almost made his Malayalam debut? Yes, you heard that right. In fact, had things gone as planned, both Shah Rukh Khan and his close friend, actor Juhi Chawla, would have forayed into Malayalam cinema together. Unfortunately, the plan fell through at the last moment, leaving behind nothing but a single photograph of him with the film's lead cast. Even so, that one image has set the internet afire time and again, thanks to the sheer amount of star power captured in a single frame.
As some of you might have already guessed, the film in question was director Fazil's 1998 blockbuster mystery buddy comedy Harikrishnans, starring Mohanlal and Mammootty in the titular roles, with Juhi Chawla as the female lead. Juhi played Meera, the woman both Hari (Mammootty) and Krishnan (Mohanlal) fall in love with. Fearing backlash from fans depending on whom Meera ended up with, the makers devised a unique solution and decided to film two climaxes. In one, she chooses Hari, and in the other, she ends up with Krishnan.
'When making the film, I didn't want people saying I favoured Mohanlal or Mammootty. At the same time, I had to consider their fans as well. The real dilemma was, who would end up with Juhi Chawla's character? If Mammootty got her, Mohanlal's fans would be upset, and vice versa. The idea of two endings came from that curiosity. You could even call it a mischief. We shot one version where Mohanlal gets her, another where Mammootty does. We also filmed a version where it wasn't revealed who she chose. There were a total of 32 prints. I resolved the issue by saying, 'Let Mohanlal get her in 16 prints and Mammootty in the remaining 16,'' Fazil once recalled in an interview.
While the filming of Harikrishnans was underway in Ooty, Shah Rukh Khan was also in town, shooting for one of his projects. Given his close friendship with Juhi, the two met frequently. Fazil shared, 'After shooting, Juhi would meet Shah Rukh every evening and tease him, saying, 'What are our Hindi sets compared to this one? This is the real set! You should meet the director, meet the artistes! What a homely atmosphere!' Eventually, Shah Rukh told me, 'I want to be in this film, even if it's just for one shot.' But I didn't know how to incorporate him.'
However, another idea occurred to the 'mischievous' Fazil, who thought, what if neither Hari nor Krishnan ended up with Meera, and she had a secret lover who ultimately became her life partner? 'While I was struggling to decide whether Mammootty or Mohanlal should get Juhi, I thought of having Shah Rukh appear at the end, walking away hand in hand with her. But I felt it would seem too artificial, so I dropped the idea,' he explained.
Interestingly, Shah Rukh was also the initial choice for another role in the film, Guptan, Meera's friend whose murder forms the crux of the mystery. However, due to his packed schedule, the plan didn't materialise, and the role went to cinematographer-director Rajiv Menon instead.
Nonetheless, just imagine how incredible it would have been to see all four legends — Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, Mohanlal and Mammootty — sharing the screen, not just in a single frame like the photo taken on the movie's set. If only Fazil had gone ahead with that 'secret lover' twist! Guess we weren't lucky enough as an audience to witness that version of Harikrishnans.

War 2 (Hindi) Day 2 Box Office: Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR starrer shows reasonable 60 percent growth on Independence holiday; Adds Rs 45 crore

War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani among others, grew by a reasonable 60 percent on day 2 in Hindi, to add Rs 45 crore net. The two day cume of the movie in Hindi stands at Rs 73 crore, keeping it on track for a Rs 130 crore net weekend. These aren't good numbers but they are decent nonetheless. The trend in the weekdays will be critical for the movie to end with net Hindi collections of over Rs 200 crore. War 2 Adds Decent Rs 45 Crore Net On Independence Day Holiday In Hindi The true value Hindi day 2 of War 2 is around Rs 48 crore net. Due to preference of the Telugu version of the movie over the Hindi version, the collections in the Andhra states for the Hindi version are lower than what they would normally be. War 2's contribution from the Telugu version for the opening day was roughly Rs 20 crore net. The presence of Jr NTR propelled the movie to these numbers. The collections from the dubbed version have come down considerably on day 2 and that was pretty much expected, too. They are pegged at around Rs 10 crore net. The two day India net all language total is a little over Rs 100 crore. War 2's Andhra States Distributor Stands To Lose Big There should be some stability at low levels for the movie on Saturday and Sunday in Telugu. However, for the prices at which the rights of the movie in the Andhra states (all languages) were acquired for, the numbers being put up by the movie are simply not going to be enough. Renegotiations will have to happen, else the distributor will lose a fortune. War 2's Trajectory Indicates A Rs 250 - 300 Crore Net Finish (All Languages) The India net numbers of War 2 are likely to end in the Rs 250 - 300 crore net range unless the weekday drops are too crazy. The overseas numbers are not much to shout about either. A USD 7.5 million extended global weekend, including premieres is probably all that the movie will be able to manage. The hold over the weekdays will be critical if it really needs to hit USD 15 million in its full run. War 2 In Theatres War 2 plays in theatres now. Tickets for the movie can be booked from the box office or from online ticketing applications. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.

Coolie Box Office Collection Day 2: Biggest opener of 2025, Rajinikanth's movie crosses ₹100 crore milestone

Coolie Box Office Collection Day 2: Coolie, which is already leading all 2025 releases in India to be the biggest opener of the year, has now crossed the ₹ 100 crore milestone at the Indian box office. Released on Thursday, August 14, superstar Rajinikanth's movie is setting the bar for domestic box office performance this year. Coolie has been released in five languages: Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada, boosting its pan-India appeal. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has already surpassed the ₹ 100 crore milestone in just two days. On Friday, August 15, the Rajinikanth movie minted ₹ 40.57 crore. With this, the record-breaking, Coolie's 2-day total stands at ₹ 105.57 crore. Sacnilk said ticket prices surged dramatically, reaching as high as ₹ 4,500 in Chennai. Both the superstar actor and the hit filmmaker achieved their personal career-best opening day with Coolie ( ₹ 65 crore), surpassing all previous films in their respective records. Coolie became the first Tamil movie to cross the 150 crores worldwide mark on its opening day, cementing its place in cinematic history, said Sacnilk. Minting ₹ 153 crore globally, Coolie is the biggest Indian opener of 2025 at the worldwide box office. Singapore even granted paid leave for fans wanting to watch Coolie on opening day. Trade analysts estimate it needs around ₹ 600 crore worldwide to be considered a hit. Coolie is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. It is backed by Kalanithi Maran's Sun Pictures. In addition to Rajinikanth in the lead, the film also stars Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, and Monisha Blessy. Bollywood actor Aamir Khan is also a part of the film in a cameo role as Daaha. Anirudh R scored the music and the songs of Coolie. The film has received mixed reactions from netizens so far. At the box office, it is clashing with Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's War 2. Coolie was released as Rajinikanth celebrated 50 years in cinema. The censor board gave the movie an A (Adults-only) certificate. This is Rajinikanth's first A-rated film in many years.
