Fittler knocks back Kangaroos job; Dragons lose another rising star to Souths

Glover had also combined well with Lyhkan King-Togia at reserve grade level, with the latter chosen to partner Kyle Flanagan in the top squad in recent months. Feeling his pathway was blocked and being off contract at the end of the season, Glover has signed a two-year deal with the Rabbitohs.
Wayne Bennett feels Glover has the potential to become a regular first grader and the chance to learn under the veteran coach proved irresistible.
The Dragons also recently lost another exciting prospect, forward Finau Latu, to Canterbury. Latu, a member of the 2023 Australian Schoolboys squad, had already signed with the Bulldogs from 2026 and the Red V granted him an immediate release before the June 30 transfer window closed.
Shane Flanagan described the scrutiny on his son as 'unfair' after his side's win over Parramatta amid calls from some critics for him to be dropped. Kyle scored a try and performed strongly against the Eels, but it's unlikely to be enough to silence his detractors if he can't hold his form during the run to the finals.
Glover won the Hastings Deering Colts player of the year award while at Brisbane Tigers for the best player in the Queensland Cup. The halfback moved south to the Bulldogs, struggled with homesickness, suffered a turf toe injury that wiped him out for most of the 2023 season, but stuck it out and came back in time to be part of Canterbury's Jersey Flegg-winning side.
He shifted to the Dragons, where he has been among the stats leaders in the NSW Cup, but will leave in the belief he will fulfil his NRL dream at Souths.
'The next step is to play NRL,' Glover said in an interview in April.
'I can't do too much until I get picked, so my main focus is to play consistent Cup footy and try to steer my team to victories.

'I'm just trying to stay involved and do the best I can.'
Asked at the time about the prospect of having to leave the Red V due to a lack of opportunities, Glover said: 'If there's a better opportunity for me to play consistent first grade, I would enjoy the challenge of taking up the next step to another level.'
That will come at the 'Pride of the League'. The Lewis Dodd experiment doesn't appear to have paid off for Souths, Bud Sullivan is technically only at the club while on loan from Wests Tigers, Cody Walker is in the twilight of his career, while Jamie Humphreys is still establishing himself as a first grader.

Outer East FN: Mullett kicks eight, Garner six as Wandin overpowers Woori Yallock

Don't miss out on the headlines from Local Footy. Followed categories will be added to My News. Aaron Mullett has achieved a lot in football but he's never kicked a century of goals. That's set to change, though, with the Wandin wizard moving to 83 for the season after a bag of eight against Woori Yallock on Saturday. With seven games left, plus finals, the ex-AFL Roo and Blue should do it on the bit. 'It's going to be a special day,' Mullett's coach at Wandin, Nick Adam, said. But just when Mullett will notch the ton has created much interest. Outer East put up a Facebook post on Monday asking for predictions, in what round he'll kick his 100th, and how many he'll finish up with this season. Most responses had him reaching the century in another three matches, in round 14, when Wandin hosts Olinda Ferny Creek. As for how many Mullett could end up with by season's end, there were predictions of between 111 and 127. There's also the possibility of Mullett missing a game or two in the back end as Wandin, with an eye on finals, manages its star — although Adam said the club hadn't scheduled any games off for the 33-year-old. 'His body is feeling really good,' Adam said. 'We manage his load through the week … he is professional as anyone in what he does to prepare to play footy.' Adam said the Bulldogs would play Mullett 'if he feels he's ready and fresh'. 'I think once we get the 100 out of the way then that becomes another conversation about what we do leading into finals,' Adam said. 'I have this conversation all the time but players want to play. 'And whether you're 34 or 21 … it's instinctual to them, it's in their DNA. 'But we're mindful that we need him to be the best version of himself in September.' On Saturday, Mullett combined with Joel Garner, who kicked six goals, to overpower Woori Yallock 17.15 (117) to 14.9 (93). The Bulldogs named Cayden Black as their best player after his strong and impressive display in the midfield. 'He's a ripper kid, a ripper human, tough and uncompromising would be the way I'd describe him,' Adam said of Black. Macauley Beckwith was also influential for Wandin, kicking a goal in the last quarter as the Bulldogs edged ahead. 'He went on ball and was our best player in the last quarter when the game was up for grabs,' Adam said of Beckwith. 'The intensity that he played at for that (last) 30 minutes was a step above almost everybody else.' Wandin debuted two teenagers: 16yo Camden Jones, who played on a wing, and Riley Gray, who played in the back six. Both did well. 'We feel like we've got a defined pathway of talent that's going to come through,' Adam said. 'There's about eight of them in under 18s who look like they could potentially be 100 game players for the club.' Wandin's Harrison van Duuren was taken to hospital after copping an accidental knock. Wandin hosts Monbulk on Saturday.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan returns to Western Bulldogs after grieving loss of Warrnambool elder

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan is back in Melbourne after last week requiring more time away from his AFL club due to the death of an elder in his home community of Warrnambool. Ugle-Hagan had only just recently reintegrated himself at the Western Bulldogs after weeks away at a health retreat in northern New South Wales. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Jamarra Ugle-Hagan back at the club after another stint away. The 23-year-old has not played football at any level this year as he battles a number of personal issues. Since returning, Ugle-Hagan had been undergoing weekly medical checkups in a triage with the AFL, Western Bulldogs and his management. But he informed the club last week he needed more time away as he dealt with some personal tragedy, according to The Agenda Setters' Caroline Wilson. 'Last week, following the death of an elder, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan told the club he would be heading Warrnambool way to spend some time with family and friends,' Wilson said on Monday night. 'And look, I can't say too much about what happened, except that he did return back to Melbourne this evening, the club has confirmed. 'We know that there are some mental health issues going on with Jamarra, we know that the Bulldogs have wrapped their arms around him — but we know that this is a week-to-week proposition, and he did go home for personal reasons. 'There have been reports that there might have been some misbehaviour when he did go home but, as the club says, if that is true, they're not aware of it. And they're also very aware that he is having some deeply held personal issues and so, while they're not happy about it, they would understand it. 'The good news is he's back today, back this evening in Melbourne, and hopefully, continuing on the (right) track.' Wilson said the Bulldogs were hesitant to go into specifics when she pressed them for more details. 'The club just simply wants Jamarra better, they want him better,' she said. 'I asked them whether he was being (drug) tested every week, they said that was a personal question and they weren't going to go down that road. 'But obviously he's part of (an) ongoing medical regime, which is also being run by the AFL.' Speaking to former Brisbane players Rhys Mathieson and Mitch Robinson on their podcast Rip Through It recently, Ugle-Hagan opened up on what has been going on in his life behind the scenes. He missed the Bulldogs' centenary match earlier this year while helping out a friend in need. 'My best mate rang me on the phone and was about to take his own life and I had to call him out of it, while he was in Warrnambool,' he said. 'He come up that weekend and spent it with me and the game was on, that is why I didn't go.' Ugle-Hagan said he 'felt like I was on my own the whole time' while away from the club, and admitted he had suicidal thoughts. 'All the noises actually sent me to a rehab facility for my mental health,' he added. 'It got to a point where I had to give my car to a mate so I couldn't drive. I just didn't trust myself driving. 'There were times when I would think about, to be honest with you, just not even worth even living. 'I went through a struggle where I didn't want to leave the house. I hit rock bottom, and found basement.'
