Amid heightened security following India's retaliatory strikes across the border, Bengaluru is all set to witness a large-scale civil defence mock drill as part of Operation Abhyas, a nationwide preparedness exercise ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday. The mock drill was held at 3:30 PM at the Civil Defence Headquarters in Ulsoor, with coordinated activity across multiple police stations and fire stations in the city. Bengaluru is among 244 districts across India identified as vulnerable, and has been categorised under Category II Civil Defence Towns by the Ministry of Defence based on a vulnerability assessment. The drill aimed to prepare civilians and emergency responders for a range of hostile attack scenarios. Simulations included:
Incoming air raid response with phased siren activation and enforced blackout measures Building fire emergencies Search and rescue operations Casualty evacuation from hazardous zones Setting up of temporary hospitals Evacuation of civilians to demilitarized safety bunkers
Sirens were activated city-wide, sounding in three distinct alarm tones, each indicating different stages of a threat. These tones served to educate both the public and civil defence personnel on how to respond during a real emergency.
Bengaluru has a 5,000-strong Civil Defence force, and all personnel were mobilised as part of today's exercise. Officials confirmed that drills were carried out at strategic locations, including Ulsoor, major police stations, fire stations, and traffic-sensitive areas. The aim was to simulate real-time coordination between departments during potential air or terror strikes.

The timing of the drill comes on the heels of 'Operation Sindhoor', India's overnight military response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. In the early hours of May 7, India reportedly struck nine targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, which intelligence agencies said were being used to support cross-border terrorism.
Sources within the Ministry of Home Affairs said that the Operation Abhyas mock drills were part of a broader national contingency and readiness plan, ensuring that civil defence mechanisms are robust in the event of escalation or retaliation.
The Bengaluru exercise was overseen by Prashant Kumar Thakur, Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards, in coordination with the district administration and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Officials said more such drills will be conducted in coming days in other Karnataka cities like Raichur, Karwar, Mysuru, and Mandya, which also fall under vulnerability categories.

Incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan is likely to get bail on June 11 in the Al-Qadir Trust case, a top party leader has said here. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) is set to hear the petitions requesting the suspension of sentences to Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the 190 million Pound Al-Qadir Trust case on June 11. Khan, 72, has been lodged at the Adiala Jail since August 2023 in multiple cases. Expressing confidence that the party's founder will secure bail that day, Gohar Ali Khan, chief of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said, June 11 is going to be an important day for both Khan and his wife, but gave no particular reason. The IHC had earlier postponed the hearing of petitions in the Al-Qadir Trust case until June 11. The adjournment came after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) requested additional time to prepare its arguments, ARY News reported. Gohar told ARY News on Saturday that the PTI will collaborate with opposition parties to launch a movement, which will be led by the party's patron-in-chief from jail. He urged the opposition parties to join PTI for the sake of the country's survival and security and revealed that a strategy for the upcoming budget has been finalised. "The party will address a press conference on June 9 regarding it," he said. Earlier last month, Khan had said he will lead his party's upcoming protest movement against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led coalition government at the Centre, from the prison. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister and a prominent leader of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Ali Amin Gandapur, earlier this week threatened to launch a full-scale movement for the cricketer-turned-politician's release after Eid Al-Adha. According to an earlier report in Dawn, the NCA, in August 2019, declared that it was granted freezing orders on eight bank accounts containing 100 million pounds, "suspected to have derived from bribery and corruption in an overseas nation." The NCA said it had informed the then government, run by Khan's PTI. It is alleged that Khan asked Shehzad Akbar, his aide on accountability, to resolve the matter, who in turn, "settled" the case with the frozen funds belonging to the national treasury being adjusted against Bahria Town's liability, the Dawn said. Bahria Town Ltd, Malik's real estate firm, was found to have illegally acquired thousands of acres of land on Karachi's outskirts in district Malir. It had donated hundreds of acres of land to the Al-Qadir Trust, a non-profit that has only two trustees - Khan and Bushra Bibi.

Maharashtra news: Bank official steals gold worth ₹27 lakh in Thane, arrested by police
A bank official was arrested in Thane district of Maharashtra for allegedly stealing gold worth ₹ 27 lakh that was pledged by customers. The accussed has been identified as 29-year-old Sachin Arun Kalan. According to police, Sachin Arun Kalan, who works at a private bank in Ambernath East in the Thane district, was arrested on June 6 under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for criminal breach of trust and other offences. 'Between May and May 26, Kalan, as the bank's relationship executive, was handling gold loan cases. During this period, he took away gold ornaments worth ₹ 26.90 lakh that had been mortgaged by customers who had availed loans. A detailed probe is underway to cover all aspects of the crime,' a Shivaji Nagar police station official said, according to news agency PTI. Further investigarion is underway into the matter. A 29-year-old fisherman from Kerala has been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly duping a retired army colonel of over ₹ 18.8 lakh after promising high returns from foreign exchange (forex) investments, an official said on Saturday. The accused, identified as Sreejith Rajendran, a resident of Azheekal in Kollam district of Kerala, was apprehended from his hometown, he said. The police said Sreejith, who studied till Class 10 and is a fisherman by profession, was enticed into the racket by a friend who flaunted a lavish lifestyle funded through fraudulent means. Driven by greed and a desire for easy money, he became part of the syndicate. Earlier this year, another accused, Sunil, from Jodhpur was arrested in connection with the same gang. The mastermind of the operation, Anandhu Lal from Kollam, is still at large, according to the police. "The victim, a retired Colonel, was lured into the scam in December 2023 after receiving unsolicited messages and calls from a woman who identified herself as 'Cute Arvin Anghita'. She convinced him of potential profits in the forex market and encouraged repeated investments," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora said. Under the guise of high returns, the complainant was coaxed into transferring money in several instalments. When he sought to withdraw funds, he was told to make additional payments to process the withdrawal, he said, adding that eventually, a total of ₹ 18,80,818 was taken from him.

India-China ties: Ambassador Feihong hopes of 'better and better' future; says work needed by both sides
Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong expressed optimism about the future of India-China ties on Sunday, describing the relationship as one rooted in a shared civilizational heritage spanning thousands of years. He hoped that relations between the two neighbours would become 'better and better' in the coming years. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a felicitation programme in Kolkata for Indian students proficient in Chinese, Feihong highlighted the historical depth of the bilateral relationship. He said, that the two countries have enjoyed these close ties for the majority of these thousands of years. When asked about the ongoing border issues, Feihong cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's past remarks, saying, 'Just like Prime Minister Modi said that in the thousands of years' relations between China and India, there was a very short time of differences between us.' 'We should look forward, look to the future, the young people today,' he stated, noting that youth were central to building stronger understanding. Praising the Indian students honoured at the event, Feihong said that the young generation is the hope for the two nations. "So we should believe that in the future our relationships will be better and better," and this is serrves as a reason to resolve the differences on both sides, he said, quoted by PTI. On the question of resolving border tensions, he stressed that work should be done by both sides and not only by the government but also by the think tanks, students and universities. Feihong recalled the 'very important consensus' reached between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping to promote 'good neighbourly relationships' and expressed confidence that 'new development will be taking shape in the coming time'. He also said he was hopeful that direct flights between India and China, suspended since 2020, would resume soon. Addressing the gathering, the envoy noted that India-China relations were at a 'critical stage' and highlighted that 2025 will mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. He announced plans for a youth exchange delegation from India to visit several Chinese cities, including Beijing.
