10 Games the NFL Needs to Put on the 2025 Prime-Time Schedule
The first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night wasn't even halfway through when the league announced its next big date on the calendar: The 2025 NFL schedule will be announced in prime time on May 14.
The complete list of home and away opponents for all 32 teams was determined as soon as the 2024 season ended, but May 14 is the day we'll know when these games will be played. Fans can start planning their tailgates and road trips.

Here are a few things we know at this point:
• The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will host the kickoff game on Thursday, Sept. 4
• The Los Angeles Chargers are the designated home team for the league's second-ever game in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Friday, Sept. 5
• The Brazil game is the only prime-time matchup among the seven international games on the schedule. The New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars will each host a game in London; the Indianapolis Colts host a game in Berlin; the Miami Dolphins host a game in Madrid; and the Pittsburgh Steelers host a game in Dublin.

• Christmas is a Thursday this year, so in addition to the two afternoon games that will be streamed on Netflix, Amazon Prime will air a prime-time game on Christmas night.
Between Thursdays, Sundays and Mondays, there will be more than 50 prime-time games that get the eyes of a national audience. Networks have no doubt lobbied the NFL schedule-makers to get the best matchups possible.
Here are 10 games we think the NFL needs to put in prime time:
Las Vegas Raiders at Philadelphia Eagles

This one would work as the season opener for a few reasons. The Eagles begin the defense of their championship while Pete Carroll makes his debut as Raiders head coach after a year off. It's also a marquee matchup of running backs: Las Vegas rookie Ashton Jeanty makes his NFL debut against 2,000-yard man Saquon Barkley.
Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen and LamarBoth of these teams will surely be featured in multiple prime-time games — and both have plenty of attractive matchups to choose from. How about another Ravens-Chiefs clash? Or Bills-Chiefs, for that matter? After Josh Allen somewhat surprisingly edged out Lamar Jackson for MVP last season, this is the one that will draw the most attention. Allen and the Bills lost to Jackson and the Ravens on a Sunday night game in Week 4 last season, then got revenge in the divisional playoffs.
Los Angeles Rams at Jacksonville Jaguars
The league probably wasn't all that interested in getting Jacksonville on prime time … until the Jaguars boldly traded up last week and drafted two-way star Travis Hunter. The Heisman Trophy-winning cornerback/receiver is the main attraction here, but this could also be a fun offensive explosion between Jaguars offensive-minded rookie head coach Liam Coen and the coach who gave Coen his first NFL job, Sean McVay.
Chicago Bears at Washington Commanders

For the second year in a row, Bears QB Caleb Williams has a homecoming. His return to D.C. last season — a battle of the first two players taken in the 2024 draft — almost ended in glory when he led a go-ahead scoring drive in the final minute. That wasn't the case, however, because moments later Jayden Daniels completed a 52-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to Noah Brown to win it for Washington. Daniels and the Commanders would go on to the NFC title game. Williams and the Bears have improved their roster this offseason and expect big things from rookie head coach Ben Johnson, so this game could be another thriller.
Green Bay Packers at Pittsburgh Steelers
This matchup would be coveted by all the league's broadcast partners simply because the Packers and Steelers have two of the biggest national fanbases in the league. What would make it even more appealing is the possibility of Aaron Rodgers playing for Pittsburgh. The jury's still out on that, but I would argue it's just a matter of time. If Rodgers does land in Pittsburgh, this would be his first game against the Packers. Too bad it's not in Lambeau, but we'll take it.
New England Patriots at Tennessee Titans
Neither of these teams will be in great demand from the prime-time broadcast partners, but at least this matchup brings a couple of angles. First off, it's a national audience for the No. 1 draft pick, Titans QB Cam Ward. Second, it's a revenge game for Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, who was fired in Tennessee after the 2023 season. The Titans were foolish for letting Vrabel go, and the first-year Pats coach would love some payback.
Cincinnati Bengals at Minnesota Vikings
This will be the third career meeting between LSU superstar wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. When they met in 2021, it was Chase's first NFL game and he caught five passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. When they met in 2023, the starting quarterbacks were Nick Mullens for Minnesota and Jake Browning for Cincinnati. Do we expect fireworks? All these two guys did last year was combine for 230 receptions, 3,241 yards and 27 touchdowns.
Philadelphia Eagles at Kansas City Chiefs
After the Chiefs beat the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, they met again in Week 11 of the 2023 season — on a Monday night (with the Eagles getting a small measure of revenge). Their next meeting was this past February in Super Bowl LIX. So this time it will be the Chiefs looking for revenge.
New York Giants at Denver Broncos
Unfortunately for Russell Wilson, last year's Steelers-Broncos game was scheduled too early in the season. It was Week 2, so Justin Fields was still starting as Wilson was injured. Now that Wilson is with the Giants, they better schedule this one early in the season. That way, Wilson can have his shot at revenge against Sean Payton and the Broncos before the Giants bench him in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart.
Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks
After he resurrected his career and helped the Vikings go 14-3 last season, Sam Darnold was not exactly treated like much of a hero. The narrative was that a bulk of the credit goes to head coach and QB whisperer Kevin O'Connell, who was ready to hand the job to 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy after the Michigan alum missed his rookie season with a knee injury. So Darnold signed with Seattle, and he'd love to show the Vikings what they're missing.

Check out this mic'd up footage of new Broncos UDFA CB Joshua Pickett
The Denver Broncos just wrapped up organized team activities, with minicamp on deck next. The rookies were able to meet their veteran counterparts and showcase their skills before training camp begins. One of those new rookies is undrafted free agent defensive back Joshua Pickett. Pickett was a four-year player at Duke University from 2021-24. In 50 games played, Pickett recorded 101 tackles (66 solo, 35 assisted), five tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, 16 pass deflections and one forced fumble. Pickett had his best season in 2024, where he had 38 combined tackles (26 solo, 12 assisted), four tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble and seven pass deflections. Advertisement In one of the toughest divisions in college football, Pickett was a stalwart pass defender, and he'll aim to win a spot in Denver's secondary this summer. This NFL coach and QB combination could be the most dangerous in 2025
This NFL coach and QB combination could be the most dangerous in 2025 Show Caption Hide Caption DeMarcus Ware believes Evan Engram will help Bo Nix's growth in NFL Former Broncos linebacker Evan Engram believes veteran TE Evan Engram will help Bo Nix's growth in the NFL. Sports Seriously Editor's note: This story is a part of a series by USA TODAY Sports called Project: June. We will publish at least one NFL-themed story every day throughout the month because fans know the league truly never sleeps. Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton is on the phone. His voice is slightly hoarse from a cold but the story he told comes through loud and clear. It was about quarterback Bo Nix. It went like this. They knew that Nix was a good athlete. They saw it when Nix was at Oregon. But they didn't realize how explosive he was until Nix started actually practicing and playing in the NFL. "One thing about the QB that came even as a little surprise for us," Payton told USA TODAY Sports, "was seeing some of these off-schedule throws from him, and it kind of stunned us at how good he was at that. It's because he's so fast. I don't think people get how athletic and how fast he is." Off-schedule or off-platform throws are when the quarterback makes a pass while not in a balanced or standard throwing position. Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes excels at these. Nix is getting really good at them. In fact, he's getting good at it all. He's a big reason why the Broncos' Super Bowl window is officially open now. You read that correctly. Payton is asked for a bottom-line evaluation of Nix. "I'm seeing a player who I think will continue to make big strides," said Payton. Nix last season was off to a good start. He set Broncos rookie records for passing touchdowns (29), completions (376) and passing yards (3,775). He was also the first rookie quarterback in league history to record multiple games with at least 300 passing yards, four passing scores and a passer rating of at least 140. What Payton has found in Nix is most likely another quarterback star. Payton has had this before. (More on that in a moment.) This season we could see this duo become the most dangerous coach-quarterback combo in football. It's also why that Super Bowl window is opening now. Notice, I didn't say the best coach-quarterback combo (though that could happen as well). I said the most dangerous. If anyone can unseat the current best combo right now in Andy Reid and Mahomes, with three straight Super Bowl appearances, it would be this one. Yes, the combo of Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts just beat Kansas City in the Super Bowl, but Reid-Mahomes is still the gold standard. Payton and Nix, however, just entered the chat. The Broncos were a stunning 10-7 last year in part because Nix shocked everyone. But there's a reason he did. This is what Payton does. Give him a good quarterback, he makes him really good. Give him a great quarterback, he helps make him a certain Hall of Famer. See: Brees, Drew. Brees finished his career as the NFL's all-time leader in passing yards and completions when he retired in 2021. Tom Brady would later pass him. (Brady would later pass errybody.) Brees made 13 Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl, where he was also named Super Bowl MVP. Brees once remembered how this historic pairing began. "It goes back to when he first sat me down before I ever signed with the Saints, and he started drawing up plays on the board that was a combination of his West Coast offensive background and philosophy, and the things that I did well with the San Diego Chargers," Brees said. "I remember looking at him saying, 'Oh, you guys run these concepts as well?' And he said, 'No, but I know that you ran these and you ran them very well, and we're going to build this offense around you and your strengths.' "Right away, I realized that that was such a unique approach and maybe so much different than what I expected, especially from a first-time head coach, coming into a really tough situation with high expectations." That is classic Payton. I'll always believe that Payton is the best play caller in the history of the sport. One of the best play designers. One of the best at getting his players to understand his concepts, and adapting his concepts to the player. I know this because I've seen it up and close and personal. Watched him do it. Brees will skip into the Hall of Fame and some day Payton will follow him. Now, I'm seeing the same thing in Denver. It goes beyond the obvious that Nix and Brees are similar specimens. It's Payton again morphing the offense around what Nix does best. Payton is also criminally underrated in building a good culture. He's creating Saints West. Not the Saints you see now. Or the almost comically bad Saints teams from the 1970s. It's the one that was once solid and even feared. Payton is helping his own cause by putting pieces all around Nix. The Broncos had a successful offseason signing key free agents in safety Talanoa Hufanga, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and tight end Evan Engram. The latter will be that "joker" weapon for the Broncos who maneuvers around the formation creating mismatches. 'That is a cool thing to just embrace,' Engram said. 'Sean talks about it a lot. It was a big part of the pitch coming here. ... I definitely see that it is something that has to be earned with the way I work and the way that I learn the offense to gain the trust of Sean, Bo, and the rest of the coaches and players. I think we have a bunch of 'Jokers' on this team, honestly, that can have a great role on this offense. It is definitely something that I like to embrace, but it is also something that I am going to earn, too.' And there's a piece of data you should know. The Broncos had 134 games missed due to injuries in 2022. That number fell to 35 in 2023 and 33 last season. It shows Payton is figuring out more than just the QB situation. So, this is just your warning. Will the Broncos win the Super Bowl this year? Maybe not. Or, heck, maybe so. What's certain is the Super Bowl window for this team is officially open. Thanks primarily to Payton and Nix.

The Steelers' odds don't move much, if at all, post-Aaron Rodgers
The Steelers have added quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The move hasn't added much to their betting odds for 2025. At DraftKings, the Steelers have dropped from a +4500 underdog to win the Super Bowl to +4000. While that reflects some movement, it still has them as 40-1 long shots to win their seventh Lombardi Trophy. Others sports books haven't changed the Super Bowl odds at all, post-Rodgers. Via Ben Fawkes of Yahoo Sports, the Steelers' odds remain 45-1 at BetMGM. The odds haven't changed because the Rodgers move has been expected. As noted by Fawkes, the Steelers opened at 80-1 to win the Super Bowl. Even with Rodgers, the Steelers remain decidedly below elite teams like the Bills (+700), the Ravens (+700), the Chiefs (+750), and the Bengals (+2000). Even the Chargers and Broncos — both at +2500 — are viewed as significantly better bets than the Steelers to win it all. One sports book executive summarized the situation in blunt terms. 'Rodgers has been awful,' Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook V.P. of risk Ed Salmons told Fawkes. 'Before he ruptured his Achilles, his last year in Green Bay he wasn't good. Since the [Achilles] injury, he can't move — he just dumps it off so he doesn't get hit. [Mason] Rudolph and Rodgers are the same thing for me.' Most would say the two aren't the same. The question is whether, with Rodgers, the Steelers become anything more than a team that gets to the postseason and might or might not win a playoff game for the first time in nine years.
