Tesla's profits plunged by 71% in Q1 2025. Can Elon Musk turn it around?
Elon Musk is facing one of his toughest tests yet: restoring confidence in Tesla's brand. The electric carmaker has seen its profits plunge by 71 percent in the first quarter of 2025, driven largely by a backlash against Musk's political affiliations and controversial role in President Donald Trump's administration.
Sales of Tesla vehicles across Europe have dropped sharply, with a 45 percent decline in the EU and a staggering 62 percent fall in Germany alone, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). Showrooms in Europe and the US have become targets for vandalism and boycott campaigns following Musk's support for public sector cuts and far-right figures overseas. In Milan, protesters hung Musk in effigy, while in Berlin and London, demonstrators labelled Tesla vehicles as 'Swasticars.

'Will spend less time at DOGE from May': Elon Musk to focus on Tesla as its profits plunge 71%
Despite these setbacks, Musk appears intent on shifting focus back to Tesla. During Tuesday's earnings call, he announced plans to reduce his time working for the 'Department of Government Efficiency' – a post he holds in Trump's administration – to just one or two days per week starting in May. Tesla's shares rose nearly five percent following the announcement.
Musk rejected claims that political controversies were damaging the brand, instead blaming recent sales drops on production halts caused by upgrades to the Model Y.

Analysts, however, are not convinced. JP Morgan described the situation as one of 'unprecedented brand damage,' while Wedbush's Dan Ives, a longstanding supporter of Tesla, called it a 'full-blown crisis.'

Tesla feels the heat: Elon Musk's DOGE politics hits Tesla profits
Compounding Tesla's woes is the rise of aggressive competition, particularly from Chinese automaker BYD, which is developing ultra-fast charging batteries. European manufacturers are also rolling out new models with advanced technology, further eating into Tesla's market share.
In the US, Tesla's dominance has slipped, with its EV market share falling below 50 percent.
Meanwhile, Tesla continues to pin its hopes on autonomous driving. Musk reaffirmed that its Robotaxi service would launch in Austin by June, despite Google's Waymo already offering millions of driverless trips in several American cities. Musk insists that software updates will soon allow current Teslas to operate autonomously, although such promises have been made – and missed – before.
Tesla's valuation remains lofty, trading at over 100 times its projected earnings, making the company highly vulnerable to further setbacks.

Did Elon Musk hit Scott Bessent? White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismisses report; calls it 'robust disagreements'
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt minimised reports of a physical confrontation between Elon Musk and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, describing it as a "robust disagreement." Speaking to Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures," Leavitt acknowledged her absence during the April incident but disputed characterisations of it as a "fistfight," after reports suggested Musk collided with Bessent's rib cage in a forceful manner. "I certainly wouldn't describe it as a fistfight, Maria," Leavitt told host Maria Bartiromo. "It was definitely a disagreement, although I was not there. I didn't witness it with my own eyes." Leavitt referenced her previous statement about occasional disagreements between cabinet members and Musk, emphasising the administration's ability to maintain productive working relationships despite differences. 'When this story originally broke, I said from the podium that there have definitely been healthy disagreements amongst the cabinet and Elon Musk,' she said. 'There were times in which they got frustrated with one another, but I think that really speaks to the heart of this Cabinet and the president's team, that they can have these robust disagreements and then still come together to do what's right for the people they are serving," she further said, adding, 'We have moved on from that." The administration has indicated its focus on advancing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with emphasis on reducing governmental inefficiencies and mismanagement. This bill has been openly opposed by Musk which has caused friction with Trump. According to Steve Bannon's account to the Washington Post, the incident escalated after Bessent accused Musk of fraudulent behaviour, resulting in a physical altercation that required intervention from others present. Bannon, Trump's former chief strategist and current "War Room" podcast host, has advocated for Musk's deportation and governmental control of SpaceX in response to Musk's criticism of the president. Read more: Elon Musk hit Scott Bessent's ribcage after being called a 'fraud', Trump called it 'too much' Neither Musk nor Bessent have addressed the alleged incident publicly. The New York Times had previously reported a verbal disagreement between the two during the same April meeting. The meeting involved discussions about Internal Revenue Service leadership candidates. The president ultimately supported Bessent's recommendation. Earlier, Musk had endorsed Howard Lutnick for Treasury Secretary, though Lutnick was later appointed as Commerce Secretary. Reports indicate that during the meeting, Bessent criticised Musk's performance in reducing government expenditure through the Department of Government Efficiency, noting significant shortfalls in achieving the targeted $1 trillion in cuts.

Diversification, policy reforms aid Odisha's industrial progress: CM
1 2 3 4 Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the BJP govt's one-year anniversary, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said that Odisha is becoming a "diversified industrial powerhouse" and a top investment destination in the country by not just approving investments worth Rs 4.5 lakh crore but also successfully grounding projects worth Rs 1.78 lakh crore. "Odisha is no longer just a minerals and metals hub. We are becoming a diversified industrial powerhouse, where opportunity flows from port to plant, and from cities to every aspirational district," the CM said during a meeting with leading industrialists and entrepreneurs in the city. "We are not merely sanctioning projects; we are grounding them. We are not making promises; we are delivering results — at scale, with speed, and with purpose," Majhi said. Mapping the industrial growth story, he said, "In just one year, we approved over 200 large and mega projects. Odisha now stands for credibility, competitiveness and commitment to progress." The CM said industries are diversifying from minerals and metals to green energy, agro-processing, technical textiles and shipbuilding, with investments flowing into 20 sectors. He attributed the success to proactive policy push like outcome-based governance and a "whole-of-govt model" that emphasises seamless coordination between departments and agencies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo Roadshows in Delhi, Mumbai and Singapore have pitched Odisha as a hub for chemical, electronics, capital goods and advanced manufacturing, while two major events, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Utkarsh Odisha — Make in Odisha Conclave-2025, attracted global attention and industrial giants expanding the state's economic footprint, Majhi said.
