Nursing council to offer faculty simulation-based training in Delhi

Chennai: In light of growing evidence that nearly 50% of training for nursing degrees can be done through simulation, faculty from nursing colleges in Tamil Nadu will be provided training at a programme organised by the Indian Nursing Council with support from Union govt, said Indian Nursing Council (INC) president T Dileep Kumar on Saturday.

The council will bear the expenses, including ticket fare, for the training planned at SGT University in Delhi, he said at a nursing graduation ceremony organised for the govt nursing institutions. Simulation is a powerful and essential component of modern nursing education, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, he added.
The council realises that it is important to attract people into nursing and retain them, he said.
State govts, including Tamil Nadu, must increase the sanctioned strength of nurses to improve the nurse-patient ratio, he said. In many parts of India, a nurse takes care of more than 40 patients in some hospitals, and in rural areas, there are one or two nurses on night duty for the entire hospital, he said. All govts must follow the Staff Inspection Unit (SIU) for nurses, which recommends staffing standards for nursing personnel in Indian hospitals.
"These norms specify the ideal nurse-to-patient ratio in various hospital departments and wards, aiming to ensure adequate staffing for optimal patient care," he said.
Nurses from India and Philippines are most employed in developed countries. "At least one in seven nurses in these countries are not people who are trained in their land," he said. To retain nurses, India must offer leadership training to practising nurses and allow them to take part in important activities within the hospital.

"For instance, they must be able to decide and roll out policies for infection control. For this, we must offer better training in theory, soft skills, and leadership.
Nurses work with multiple professionals within the hospital," he said.
Earlier, INC registrar Ani Grace Kalaimathi said this is the first time the govt has organised a graduation ceremony for nurses. At least six govt colleges offer degrees in nursing, and 26 others offer diploma programmes. Health secretary P Senthilkumar and DME (in-charge) E Theranirajan also took part in the event.

Lesser seats, more applicants: Tough race for med aspirants

Bhopal: These year's NEET UG state-level counselling in Madhya Pradesh is witnessing heightened competition this year compared to the previous year, with a reduction in available seats and an increase in candidate numbers. MP Directorate of Medical Education (DME) state merit list reveals 15,129 candidates vying for 5,799 seats, comprising 4,775 MBBS and 1,024 BDS positions. The seat allocation is set for August 6. Compared to the previous year's balanced figures, this year has seen a reduction of approximately 300 seats whilst experiencing an increase of about 2,000 applicants. Following the merit list publication, registered candidates can now proceed with their choice filling. While MBBS seats maintain full occupancy, BDS and MDS programmes continue to experience vacant positions annually. For general category positions, 3,267 candidates have enrolled for 1,565 seats, resulting in two candidates competing for each position. The state's total MBBS seats amount to 4,775, spread across 17 government and 12 private medical institutions. Government medical colleges provide 2,575 MBBS seats, with private institutions offering 2,200. However, only 3,496 seats are accessible to Madhya Pradesh students through counselling. The OBC category displays similar competition levels, with 3,991 registrants—2,006 male and 1,985 female—competing for 665 seats, including 522 MBBS and 143 BDS positions. The EWS category has attracted 1,249 registrants for 186 seats. This quota, exclusively applicable to government medical colleges, reserves 10 percent for economically disadvantaged individuals from the general category. Delhi Plans State Transplant Body To Up Organ Donations

New Delhi: Health minister Pankaj Kumar Singh formally proposed the formation of a dedicated Delhi State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) to address the growing mismatch between organ demand and availability. The proposal comes ahead of National Organ Donation Day on Aug 3, observed annually to raise awareness and encourage people to pledge their organs. Singh said the occasion underscores the urgency of building robust systems that make it easier for families to donate organs. In a letter to Union health minister JP Nadda, Singh highlighted that Delhi — home to premier tertiary hospitals and a referral hub for the northern region — urgently needed SOTTO. At present, the city lacks a state-level transplant coordination body, which experts say hinders effective organ retrieval and allocation, especially from deceased donors. A dedicated SOTTO is expected to improve organ registry updates, strengthen hospital coordination, and facilitate faster matching of organs with recipients. Singh said the health department, in coordination with Indian govt's Directorate General of Health Services, has already taken proactive steps to build infrastructure and deploy trained personnel. "The proposal was submitted in accordance with the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), and we are ready to operationalise SOTTO at a suitable location," he wrote to Nadda. Speaking to TOI, the minister said streamlining transplants through the local SOTTO would reduce preventable deaths caused by delays. "A state-level body can improve awareness, counselling, retrieval and allocation, particularly for deceased donations." The letter added that the initiative would mark a significant milestone for the organ donation movement in Delhi and build public and stakeholder trust in ethical, transparent transplantation services. Dr Satyajit Kumar, state nodal officer for the THOTA cell, said the priority was to boost deceased organ transplants. "One deceased donor can save up to eight people," he said. "Living donations are limited, so we must strengthen brain death identification, train hospital staff, simplify legal procedures and honour donor families. Public awareness campaigns and better hospital systems are key to making deceased donation a sustainable, life-saving solution.
