As Assam eviction drive continues, Naga groups worry over influx of displaced people into Nagaland

GUWAHATI: The eviction drives in Assam have left the Nagas worried about a possible influx of the displaced people into Nagaland. The Konyak Students' Union, apex student body of Konyak Nagas in Nagaland, on July 23, directed its federating units, especially in Tizit and Naginimora areas, to deploy 100 volunteers daily to every entry point of Mon district. 'The volunteers are tasked with checking all non-locals entering Mon district to ensure they are carrying valid ILP (Inner Line Permit) and proper documentation,' the students' organisation said in a notification. An offshoot of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873, the ILP is an official document that an Indian citizen is required to carry while visiting the 'protected' states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh for a short period.

UP Police raids fake ‘embassy' in Ghaziabad, arrests ‘ambassador' of non-existent West Arctica

The Uttar Pradesh Police have unearthed a fake 'embassy' operating in Ghaziabad and arrested a man claiming to be an 'ambassador' of a non-existent country called 'West Arctica', The Indian Express reported on Wednesday. The arrested man was identified as Harsh Vardhan Jain, a resident of Kavi Nagar in Ghaziabad, PTI reported. Additional Director General of Police Amitabh Yash claimed that Jain was running a bogus embassy from a rented house and projected himself as the diplomatic representative of several non-existent countries such as West Arctica, Saborga, Poulvia and Lodonia, the news agency reported. The accused also moved around in vehicles bearing fake diplomatic number plates, Yash added. Jain reportedly used the setup to pass himself off as a powerful global player. 'He used the guise of diplomacy to influence businessmen, promise them access to international markets, and run a hawala network through shell companies,' The Indian Express quoted the police as saying. Preliminary investigations further suggested that Jain brokered deals by falsely promising job placements for companies and persons in foreign countries, PTI reported. After his arrest on Monday, the police seized four vehicles bearing fake diplomatic number plates, 12 forged diplomatic passports, fake documents bearing Ministry of External Affairs seals, forged PAN cards, rubber stamps of several countries and companies, and fake press cards, PTI reported. The police also said that Rs 44.7 lakh in cash, foreign currency, documents linked to several companies and fake diplomatic number plates were seized. A first information report was filed at the Kavi Nagar Police Station and further investigation was underway, The Indian Express reported. In 2011, Jain had been booked for illegally possessing a satellite phone, PTI reported. He has also been linked to controversial godman Chandraswami and international arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi earlier.

‘Handled with utmost professionalism': India on UK news report claiming wrong bodies returned after Air India crash

India on Wednesday responded to a report by a UK publication claiming that the remains of some British victims of the June 12 Air India crash in Ahmedabad were wrongly identified before repatriation. In a statement issued on Tuesday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: 'We have seen the report and have been working closely with the UK side from the moment these concerns and issues were brought to our attention. All mortal remains were handled with utmost professionalism and with due regard for the dignity of the deceased.' He added that Indian authorities are continuing to coordinate with their British counterparts to address any ongoing concerns. The Daily Mail, a tabloid newspaper published in the UK, cited an aviation lawyer representing several families, who said grieving relatives in the UK were informed of grave errors in the identification of bodies. One family had to cancel funeral plans after discovering that the coffin delivered to them contained the remains of an unidentified passenger, the report alleged. In another case, remains of more than one victim were reportedly placed in a single casket and had to be separated before burial, Daily Mail claimed. The alleged mistakes apparently came to light during identity verification conducted by Inner West London coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox, who used DNA samples provided by the families. The Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner had crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, killing 241 people onboard, including 52 British nationals. Another 19 people on the ground were also killed, and 67 were seriously injured. A preliminary report by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), released on July 10, said both of the aircraft's fuel switches were found in the cut-off position immediately after takeoff—cutting off fuel supply to the engines and leading to the crash. The controversy comes just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the UK, where he is expected to meet his counterpart Keir Starmer to sign a much-anticipated free trade agreement.
