
H.E. Bin Touq meets with tourism ministers of Spain and Croatia to enhance prospects for cooperation in the sector
During a European tour that included Spain and Croatia, H.E. Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy, met with H.E. Ton?i Glavina, Minister of Tourism and Sports of Croatia; and H.E. Rosario Sánchez Grau, Spanish Secretary of State for Tourism, with the aim of enhancing cooperation in the sector. As part of the discussions, the ministers exchanged the latest experiences and practices in the field of sustainable tourism development.
Enhancing tourism cooperation with European markets
H.E. Bin Touq expressed the UAE's desire to enhance cooperation with European markets and foster fruitful partnerships in various tourism sub-sectors and activities, thereby supporting overall economic development and creating new opportunities for shared prosperity. H.E. pointed out that the tourism sector in the UAE has undergone significant development, characterized by the adoption of forward-looking national initiatives; the establishment of distinguished tourism infrastructure in line with global best practices; the development of leading destinations and tourism products, and an increase in tourist inflows.
H.E. Bin Touq said: 'The UAE continues to support initiatives and projects aimed at sustaining global tourism growth, fostering collaboration with the UN Tourism and its member states, and expanding cooperation in various tourism sub-sectors.'
Objectives of UAE Tourism Strategy
During discussions with the tourism ministers of Spain and Croatia, H.E. Bin Touq highlighted the importance of the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031 and its key role in supporting the sustainability and competitiveness of the country's tourism sector over the next decade. The strategy has established a set of national objectives, which include elevating the UAE's status to become a leading global destination, increasing the sector's contribution to the national GDP to AED 450 billion, attracting tourism investments worth AED 100 billion to the country's markets, and welcoming 40 million guests by the year 2031.
Strong growth in UAE tourism
The Minister of Economy reviewed key performance indicators of the UAE tourism sector, which include a total of AED 45 billion in hotel revenues in 2024 with a three per cent year-over-year growth. The hotel occupancy rate in the country reached 78 per cent, which is among the highest regionally and globally. Additionally, 16 new hotels were launched across the UAE in 2024, taking the total number of hotels to 1,251 by the end of last year.
Increasing tourism movement between the UAE and Spain
During his meeting with H.E. Rosario Sánchez Grau, Spanish Secretary of State for Tourism, H.E. Bin Touq reviewed latest developments in the global tourism sector, the mechanisms to enable sustainable growth, as well as enhancing cooperation in various tourism fields. The two sides explored the potential for establishing new partnerships to increase mutual tourism flows.
The number of Spanish tourists to the UAE reached 150,231 in 2024, representing an increase of more than 14 per cent compared to that of 2023. The number of flights between the UAE and Spain amount to approximately 48 weekly services, operated by airlines of both countries.
Cooperation between tourism companies in the UAE and Croatian Markets
H.E. Bin Touq and H.E. Ton?i Glavina discussed enhancing cooperation between tourism companies and entities in the UAE and Croatian markets, in addition to enhancing joint efforts to create new tourism and leisure programs to promote mutual tourism flows. There are currently more than 42 monthly flights between the UAE and Croatia, operated by the airlines of both countries.

Prospects Of Ukraine Peace Deal Brighten After Trump-Zelensky Meeting
By Nitya Chakraborty The prospects of arriving at a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia to end the nearly three and half year old war have brightened after the Monday meeting of President Donald Trump with the Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House in the presence of the major European government heads. As a follow up, President Putin will be meeting Zelensky at a one on one meeting within next few days in a third country followed by a trilateral meeting to be attended by Trump. Two issues on which Trump was insistent was that Ukraine will not get back Crimea which Russia took control in 2014 and Ukraine will have to give up its ambition to become a member of NATO. To compensate this, Trump agreed to security guarantee to Ukraine by the European powers as also the USA. There are issues about land swapping. Those have been discussed but Trump has asked Zelensky to talk with Putin bilaterally. This actual control issue of some the areas remain unresolved as of now and this hurdle has to be crossed at the bilateral meeting. But if the US sources are to be believed, Trump has some proposals on land swapping which might be the basis for an understanding at the next meeting. Overall, the situation is positive as far as the prospects of ending the Ukraine war finally. President Putin has talked of the bilateral meeting within next two weeks, but Trump is in a hurry and so is Zelensky. Possibility is there, the bilateral one on one meeting will be held much before that. For Trump, it is a matter of personal prestige as any failure this time in arriving at a peace agreement will be taken as his personal failure also as a peace maker. In the entire efforts at making deal to end the Ukraine war, Trump has used trade and arms purchases from the USA as a bait to persuade the recalcitrant countries to come to agreement. This approach has been pursued with more vigour in the case of Ukraine which is very rich in minerals including rare earth but badly needs huge arms to modernize more its armed forces and air power. Trump took advantage of this and extracted a US$ 500 billion deal in March/April this year from Ukraine President in the first round of talks for ending Ukraine war, and in the current round, Zelensky has agreed to buy $ 90 billion arms from the USA to modernize its army. Talks have been held to allow Ukraine to export its own manufactured drones to the USA. After this$90billion purchase of arms from the US companies, Ukraine will assess its own requirements and place orders. Thus, Trump has opened up a big opportunity for the US defence companies in the US market, irrespective of the peace deal. Ukraine, with its $12.5 trillion in mineral wealth – including 20% of global titanium, significant lithium, and rare earths is a big attractive market to both Trump and Putin. While Trump is interested in the mineral wealth of Ukraine and already he has made a big deal, Putin is equally interested in getting control of big deposits of coal, gas and rare earth in some provinces of Ukraine like Donesk, Luhansk and Kherson. These were the part of Soviet Union in the communist rule. President Putin who was a leading member of the CPSU and the chief of KGB, still dreams of Greater Russia. His annexation of some strategic areas of Ukraine has to do with his nationalistic ambitions on Greater Russia, apart from taking steps to combat threat from NATO. The US, under Trump's second administration, counters with its own expansionist agenda. The April 2025 Ukraine-United States Mineral Resources Agreement ties Kyiv's economic recovery to American corporates.. This deal subjugates Ukraine's resources to US firms seeking to counter China's dominance in rare earth processing. In the latest US-China trade deal, Trump was able to extract a concession from China on resuming supply of rare earth minerals to the US market, but this was of small quantity. Trump wants to have bigger share of the rare earth minerals market and collaboration with Ukraine can ensure that. Ukraine economy is suffering in the last three and half years of war since February 24, 2022. The government badly needs massive financial support to rebuild its economy. That is not possible without big help from the USA. In 2022, the GDP of Ukraine went down by 28.8 per cent, but it recovered to 5.3 per cent in 2023 and 3.5 per cent in 2024. In 2025, the projected GDP growth is only 2 per cent. Thousands of young soldiers have died. Ukraine people are tired of the war ravages. They are looking for a respite. Nearly 33 million population of the country generally maintain a good living standard with the per capita GDP at $ 6261 projected in 2025. Sector wise services contribute 60 per cent to the GDP, industry 28.6 per cent and agriculture 12.2 per cent. Ukraine will need a massive rehabilitation and reconstruction programme if the war finally ends. But if the peace agreement is not reached at the proposed bilateral and trilateral meetings and the war intensifies, the impact on the Ukraine economy will be tragic. More than stars, a desert night to remember in Al Qua'a
There are nights in the desert when the stars put on a dazzling display, glittering like diamonds scattered across the sky. Our evening with Arabian Wanderers in Al Qua'a desert wasn't quite like that. The stars were shy, peeking out only occasionally through the hazy clouds. But here's the twist: the lack of a sparkling sky didn't take away from the magic of the experience. If anything, it made every other element shine brighter. The journey The trip began with a drive that felt like part of the adventure itself. Leaving Dubai behind, we wound through highways that soon melted into open desert roads, dunes rising up on either side. The fading sun painted the sand in golden and rose hues, turning the journey into something cinematic. By the time we reached Al Qua'a, the horizon stretched endlessly, vast and breathtaking. The setting Even without a canopy of stars, the desert setting was unforgettable. Golden dunes rolled on in every direction, silent and serene. A crisp breeze carried with it a sense of calm you don't often find in city life. Standing there, you felt dwarfed by nature's scale, the kind of perspective only the desert can give. The activities From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn't just about stargazing. First came sandboarding, a thrill that had us racing and tumbling down slopes of soft sand, laughter echoing across the dunes. It's important to note that we went on this adventure during one of the hottest weekends in the UAE, yes, crazy, but well worth it. As twilight deepened, we gathered around a fire, playing games and sharing stories, a group of strangers quickly feeling like old friends. From Portuguese to Spanish, British English to Urdu, the circle felt like a little United Nations in Al Qua'a as people bonded and showed off their competitive side. Dinner was a hearty barbecue feast of meats like beef, chicken and some local gems like tabbouleh. Plates filled with grilled meats, fresh salads, and warm bread were devoured under the night sky which was filled with stars, until they got shy and went into hiding. An astronomer's talk rounded out the evening, guiding us through constellations we couldn't quite see but could vividly imagine, blending science with mythology in a way that brought the cosmos alive. The host At the heart of it all was our host, Rizwan Ali. Charismatic, attentive, and endlessly knowledgeable, he kept the group engaged and comfortable. His ability to transform what could have been a disappointment into an evening full of joy speaks volumes. The experience Yes, we saw some stars, but not nearly as many as we'd hoped. Who would have known that you can't order stars around and ask them to appear, but that's the beauty of this experience – you know never know what to expect. The desert gave us so much more: the rush of sandboarding, the warmth of a fire under the night sky, the delicious taste of barbecue, and the camaraderie of shared adventure. In the end, the stargazing trip turned out to be about more than stars, it was about connection, nature, and the unexpected magic of the desert. Stargazing or not, Arabian Wanderers delivers an adventure worth taking. For anyone craving something different, this is a night out in the desert you won't forget. Big-ticket events set the stage for tourism growth in the Middle East
According to the ATM Travel Trends report, 50% of industry experts consider leisure events as a key opportunity for the region's tourism growth Experts speaking at ATM 2025 discussed how global sports tournaments, cultural festivals and music events across the region are boosting tourism and economic growth Dubai, United Arab Emirates: 'Big-ticket' events are playing a pivotal role in driving international tourism and accelerating economic growth, according to experts speaking recently at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025. In the GCC alone, the event and exhibition market is expected to reach US$827 million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 3.94%. Following the global success of mega-events such as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and Expo 2020 Dubai, momentum is building across the region as Saudi Arabia prepares to host the 2034 World Cup. Discussing the evolution and impact of these events, panellists including H.E. Khalid Jassim Al Midfa, Chairman, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority; Sebastien Doussin, Senior Vice President - Global Travel Services & Destination Management. Dnata and Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO, Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), shared fascinating insights at ATM 2025, where the events industry was under the spotlight. The panel addressed how big-ticket events – so-called for their high value, cost and impact – have demonstrated their ability to attract millions of international visitors, boost hotel occupancy, stimulate infrastructure growth and generate long-term brand positioning for host destinations. Highlighting the importance of understanding the long-term strategic value of big-ticket events beyond immediate sales, H.E. Khalid Jassim Al Midfa commented: ' Big-ticket events provide a destination with an opportunity to establish brand positioning and exposure in a competitive global environment. These events play a vital role in supporting broader government objectives, but it is essential to invest in the right product for your destination.' Doussin reaffirmed the importance of large-scale events in destination positioning, referencing the growth of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the surge of international golfing tournaments throughout the UAE and the launch of NBA events in the capital. Commenting on the impact of technology on events, Doussin said: 'Technology has already changed big-ticket events, especially in terms of distribution and customer experience. All of the ticketing for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar was completely digital through the official event app, offering flexibility and ease of use. Ultimately, technology enables an event to become more seamless, easier and enjoyable.' Meanwhile, Hamid urged the industry to broaden the definition of big-ticket events to include exhibitions, conferences and cultural performances. He referenced Bangkok's weekly concerts, which are mainly K-pop driven, as examples of how live entertainment extends tourist stays. Supporting the panel's observations, the ATM Travel Trends report highlights the rising appeal of live entertainment and sports in influencing travel decisions. Leisure events were outlined as the top opportunity for tourism growth among 50% of industry experts, as consumer demand for in-person and cultural experiences has increased significantly in recent years. The trend of combining traditional leisure and business travel, or 'bleisure', has also accelerated as increased remote working and flexible working visas have enabled more people to live and work overseas. Building on this, business travellers are often extending their stays in destinations, creating a new opportunity in this rapidly expanding sector. The report also highlighted that business events (MICE) are emerging as a significant driver of tourism growth across the Middle East, complementing the region's thriving leisure sector. Global business travel reached a record US$1.4 trillion in 2024 and is projected to rise to US$2 trillion by 2030. The Middle East is well-positioned to capture a growing share of this lucrative market, increasing from approximately 2.5% in 2024 to over 3% by the end of the decade, supported by world-class infrastructure, a strategic location, and an expanding schedule of high-profile events.
