Anyone who's used a PC in the past 20 years will be aware of antivirus software. Adverts have been popping up everywhere, telling us our computers are at risk and we need to update our protection or buy more.
While Windows 11 comes with its own security solution, installing third-party antivirus software can give you a greater sense of security, as well as, potentially, faster updates, more options, bundled extras such as VPNs, browser plugins, and even tech support, should anything go wrong.
A big part of computer security comes from the user's behavior. So, don't click on links from unknown email senders or run downloaded applications if you don't know their source. Don't reuse the same password over and over again, either.

All the antivirus apps here were installed on a Windows 11 PC updated to the latest version and with all security patches available at the time of writing. Unwilling to expose the PC to genuine danger or the dark web, we used specially created files from Eicar.org to simulate virus attacks. We also visited the Wicar.org antivirus test site to gauge how well the apps responded to the presence of potentially harmful malware.
We then used each product to scan the SSD of a Windows 11 PC with a mix of apps, documents, and the OS itself — and noted how long it took to complete. We also looked at the reports compiled by independent security testing labs, such as SE Labs and AV-Test, to see which of the security packages were impressing the experts there. Windows 10 Users Warned to Upgrade by Mid-October
Microsoft this week sent alerts to hundreds of millions of people who still use the Windows 10 operating system, advising them to upgrade to Windows 11 or sign up for extended service updates. A 60-day notice that was sent to Windows 10 users through the operating system's update program says that those who have Windows 10 Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations will not receive any crucial security updates starting on Oct. 14, 2025.

How to Install Steam on a Chromebook
ChromeOS-based laptops are known to be endurance champs, but Google is out to change that image with help from game-maker Valve. In 2022, the two released an alpha version of Valve's Steam game store to try on Chromebooks through the ChromeOS Dev channel. It has now moved out of the instability of the Dev channel and into the ChromeOS Beta channel, with support for more devices, more games and an improved user experience. The platform already supports Android games, and you can experience AAA titles via cloud gaming platforms like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now. However, the ability to play Steam games means there's more you can do with these computers. With the beta release, support was added for devices with AMD Ryzen 5000 C-series and Intel 12th-gen Core CPUs. Minimum CPU requirements were also lowered to include Core i3 and Ryzen 3 processors, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (or more). Note, Google still recommends an i5 or Ryzen 5 and 16GB of RAM for the best experience. There are now 35 Chromebook models officially supported for Steam on ChromeOS. Josh Goldman/CNET If you have one of these Chromebooks, you can access the beta-quality version of Steam on ChromeOS. You'll have to switch to the Beta channel which is a snap to do. Open the settings menu on your Chromebook and search for "Channels" at the top of the window. Click on Channels and select Beta. The Chromebook will start to download the beta version of ChromeOS. Once the update is downloaded and installed, you'll then need to restart the Chromebook and it will be in the Beta channel (ChromeOS 108 or later). You're now just two steps away from getting Steam. 1. Open a browser window and navigate to chrome://flags 2. Search for #borealis-enabled and set it to Enabled 3. Open the ChromeOS launcher (click the button in the lower-left corner of the screen) 4. Search for "Steam" and select the app when it appears in the results 5. Follow the setup process to install Steam and sign into your account Google has the full install instructions on the forums. You'll also find a list of known issues as well as all of the games currently supported. It's a surprisingly long list, including Portal 2, Dota 2, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Stardew Valley, Terraria, Hades, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition. When available, Chrome OS will run the Linux version of games. Other games use Steam Play's compatibility tool called Proton. It's also used for the Steam Deck handheld gaming device. The gameplay is actually fairly smooth on the Acer Chromebook 713 I tested with, paired with the excellent Steelseries Stratus Plus Bluetooth controller for Chromebooks and Android. If you're shopping for a Chromebook right now and thinking you might want to use Steam once it's finished and ready for the public, you'll want to keep the system requirements listed above in mind. Also, make sure you get enough storage to hold your games. Chromebooks typically don't have high-capacity storage drives but Steam support might force that to change.
