NRL bombshell as prodigy Lachlan Galvin switches to rival club effective immediately

Daily Mail25-05-2025

Lachlan Galvin is set to make a switch to Canterbury after the Wests Tigers prodigy was sold the vision of joining the Bulldogs over Parramatta.
Days after meeting with both clubs, Galvin made the long-awaited call over his future this weekend in a decision that will have ramifications across the NRL.
The five-eighth could be released from the final 17 months of his Tigers deal as early as this week, with a six-figure transfer fee still needing to be negotiated between them and the Bulldogs.
Galvin's move will put a full stop on the lengthy saga surrounding his future, which began when he requested a release from the Tigers before his debut last season.
The 19-year-old officially informed the joint-venture last month he would not re-sign beyond the end of 2027, before he was given permission to talk to rivals.
Parramatta had been favourites to secure his services, given he played juniors for the club in the Harold Matthews competition.
Galvin met with officials from the Bulldogs and Eels in the past week, but Parramatta had come to the realisation this weekend they were likely to miss out.
It's believed the club did not want to get into a bidding war with the Bulldogs, who viewed Galvin as a crucial piece in their premiership push.
Where Galvin plays at Canterbury remains a point of interest.
Halfback Toby Sexton is off contract at the end of this year, and negotiations are yet to begin around a new deal.
Galvin remains untested as a controlling halfback, while Canterbury five-eighth Matt Burton has only played nine games in the No.7 jersey.
There is a suggestion Galvin could play as a lock or in the backline, but Canterbury would be unlikely to make significant changes given their start to 2025.
Playing together in the halves, Sexton and Burton have taken the Bulldogs to their best start to a season in a decade, their 9-2 record putting them on top of the ladder.
Bailey Hayward is also seen as a future star at Canterbury, having filled in everywhere from the back row to the halves this year.
Galvin's decision means Parramatta must continue their search to replace Newcastle-bound Dylan Brown.
The Eels had pushed hard to sign the teenager, with Mitch Moses selling him the vision of leading the club within four or five years.
Galvin is managed my Mitch's uncle, Isaac Moses.
There remain other options on the market, with clubs keeping a close eye on Melbourne's Jonah Pezet if Jahrome Hughes recommits to the Storm for 2027 and beyond.
Meanwhile, Galvin's eventual exit from the Tigers will end a sorry chapter for the club, given the Campbelltown junior represented one of their best young talents.
His final act could well be dropping a ball over the line late in last week's loss to the Rabbitohs, effectively costing the Tigers the game.
Fellow teenager Latu Fainu is expected to be available to return from a hand injury against North Queensland next week, and will now have the chance to become Jarome Luai's long-term halves partner.

Wigan Warriors legend Billy Boston to be first rugby league player knighted

For the first time in rugby league's 130 year history one of its greatest players will be knighted. Wigan Warriors legend Billy Boston will become the first person from his sport to be presented with a knighthood at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The 90-year-old, who was born in Wales, played on the wing at Wigan for 15 years after making the switch from rugby union to rugby league in 1953. He went on to score a record 478 tries in 487 games for the club winning the Challenge Cup three times as well as the Championship. Boston also had an impressive record for Great Britain scoring 24 tries in 31 test matches and in 1954 became the first non-white player selected to tour Australia and New Zealand. In 2000, he was given the freedom of Wigan and has three statues, in Wigan, Wales and at Wembley Stadium. Boston was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth and now after a campaign led by his local Makerfield MP Josh Simons, he will be made a knight of the realm by King Charles. Wigan Warriors owner Mike Danson told the club's website: 'One of the biggest thrills in my ownership of Wigan Rugby League Club has been enjoying the company of Billy Boston. Without doubt Billy was a player who was – and still is – the biggest crowd favourite in Rugby League. 'He is my mum Jean's favourite player – they are of the same age! She remains in awe of the great man and his Rugby League legacy. 'I am therefore thrilled that at long last, Billy will be appointed as Rugby League's first Knight! A richly deserved honour which means this most humble of men, rightly receives at last, fitting recognition for his extraordinary efforts. Many congratulations to Billy, his wife Joan and the family on this magnificent achievement.'

Wigan great Billy Boston to be knighted in historic first for rugby league

The Wigan Warriors legend Billy Boston will become the first rugby league player in the sport's 130-year history to receive a knighthood on Tuesday. Rugby league has never had a player awarded the highest accolade in an honour's list, with calls increasing in recent years thanks to the fundraising done away from the field by the likes of Kevin Sinfield – who is expected to be given a similar honour at some stage – and the late Rob Burrow. But Boston's name has also always been high on the list of candidates overlooked. Sign up to The Recap The best of our sports journalism from the past seven days and a heads-up on the weekend's action after newsletter promotion However, that will finally change this week. Boston is expected to be named as a knight to finally end the sport's wait for such an honour. The 90-year-old is not only one of rugby league's greatest players, but one of the pioneering black figures in British sporting history. Boston was born in Cardiff but his opportunities in rugby union were limited. That led to him signing for Wigan in 1953, where he would remain until 1968, setting a number of astonishing records along the way in a glittering career. In 488 games he scored 478 tries, establishing himself as the club's leading try-scorer with a record that will surely never be beaten. Boston was also a member of Great Britain's World Cup-winning squad of 1960, playing for his country on 31 occasions. His accomplishments laid the platform for more players from Wales to make the transition to rugby league from union, with a statue in the centre of Wigan immortalising his importance to the town's history. There is a similar statue in Cardiff of Boston and two more trailblazers from Wales that starred in league, Clive Sullivan and Gus Risman. Boston's accomplishments will finally be recognised on a national stage. It is a symbolic moment for league as well as Boston, with the sport getting the honour many believe it has undeservedly lacked for decades. Dozens of high-profile figures from rugby union have been knighted over the last century, with nobody from league achieving a similar honour until now.

Andy Farrell faces front-row crisis as Zander Fagerson is ruled out of Lions tour of Australia with calf injury

Lions head coach Andy Farrell has been confronted by a pre-tour injury crisis in his front row as one tighthead prop was ruled out of the Australia tour on Monday and another is struggling to regain full fitness. Scotland's Zander Fagerson has been forced to withdraw from the squad to travel Down Under after failing to recover from a calf injury. Irish titan Tadhg Furlong, who has started the last six Tests played by the Lions – in South Africa in 2021 and in New Zealand in 2017 – has been hampered by a calf problem of his own and is considered a major doubt for Leinster's URC Final against the Bulls from South Africa in Croke Park, Dublin on Saturday. As forecast, Ireland's Australia-born tighthead Finlay Bealham has been called up to the full squad, as the chosen replacement for Fagerson, while Sale's explosive rookie, Asher Opoku-Fordjour will also travel to Portugal with the Lions today, as cover. Jamie George is also heading to the Algarve as expected, given the absence of two Irish hookers – Dan Sheehan and Ronan Kelleher – who will be on duty for Leinster. England tighthead Will Stuart is unavailable for the Lions training camp this week as he is preparing with Bath to face Leicester in the Premiership Final at Twickenham on Saturday, but he is now emerging as the front-runner to wear the No 3 shirt in the Test series against the Wallabies. The loss of 29-year-old Fagerson – a cornerstone of the Scotland pack – is a savage blow for Farrell snr and his coaching staff, and if Furlong were to be ruled out of the tour too, it would constitute a crisis. The head coach faces an anxious weekend ahead, as he waits and hopes to avoid any further untimely setbacks – having already lost Leinster and Ireland No 8 Caelan Doris, who had been a prime captaincy contender, to injury. However, the superpower Irish province have injury doubts about three other Lions this week; centre Garry Ringrose and full-back Hugo Keenan (both calf) and flanker Josh van der Flier (hamstring). Fagerson hadn't played for Glasgow since early April and reacting to his removal from the Lions squad, Farrell acknowledged that such disruption is inevitable, saying: 'It's tough on Zander to miss out so close to the tour, but now Finlay gets an opportunity to come in and add to the group. This is unfortunately part and parcel of the game, so we always have to be prepared for that. 'But it's great to be finally at the stage where we can get onto the training ground and get to work with these players. Portugal will be really important for us as we look to get our house in order with only a few training sessions before we take on Argentina in Dublin.' The Lions will hope that Furlong pulls through to be available Down Under. Australia are not the scrum push-overs they were in the past, with Kiwi scrum guru Mike Cron on the Wallabies staff and Angus Bell emerging as one of the world's pre-eminent looseheads last year. However, they have front-row problems of their own, with Taniela 'Tongan Thor' Tupou enduring an untimely crisis of confidence, having resigned himself to being left out of Joe Schmidt's squad to face the Lions. Meanwhile, proposed rebel league R360 has been dismissed by a leading sports broadcaster as a 'delusional' concept. Andrew Georgiou, president and managing director of TNT Sports' parent company, Discovery Sports, said: 'If these folks believe that they are going to grow the revenue by putting this thing on, I think they're delusional. 'What it will do is further complicate what is already a well-functioning rugby ecosystem. The fact that it's being likened to LIV Golf, I think is a perfect analogy. It's commercially unsustainable.' Premiership Rugby chief executive Simon Massie-Taylor gave his own reaction to news of the R360 mission to form a global league with the world's leading players, adding: 'It's not a threat per se, but we have no idea how it could ever work, definitely for the club game. 'Rugby needs roots, it doesn't need pop-ups. Without those roots, it's very difficult to understand how a system could ever work.'
