State police to hand out 1.5K handgun safes to promote safe storage

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — Connecticut State Police say they'll soon be issuing 1,500 handgun safes to new pistol permit recipients as part of their Safe Storage Initiative CT program. The program is meant to raise awareness and education about the safe storage of firearms. Connecticut advocates push to raise awareness of gun storage safety The safes were funded by a Byrne-SCIP grant and will be issued to recipients at state police headquarters in Middletown. They'll also come with a pamphlet outlining safety recommendations and relevant laws. Gun Storage Check Week is also this week, spanning from June 1 to June 7. State police said it's an important time to remember improper storage can lead to accidents, suicides, or thefts. The Safe Storage Initiative is expected to launch on July 1. State police did not say when the safes will be available. Safe-Storage-Initiative-PamphletDownload Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
