Don't use right to speech to hurt sentiments: Karnataka HC to Kamal Haasan

Hans India2 days ago

The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday reprimanded actor Kamal Haasan over his controversial remark on the origins of the Kannada language, questioning why the police should provide security for his mistake. "Don't use the Right to Speech to hurt sentiments," the court said.
The bench, headed by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, made these observations while hearing a petition submitted by Kamal Haasan seeking security for the screening of his movie 'Thug Life' in Karnataka's theatres and multiplexes.
Kamal Haasan had stirred controversy by stating that the Kannada language is derived from Tamil. He has also refused to apologise, despite widespread protests against him across the state.
The court asked Kamal Haasan's counsel to clarify the actor's stand regarding tendering an apology and adjourned the matter until 2.30 p.m.
The bench noted that a prominent person like C. Rajagopalachari had issued a similar statement in 1950 about the origins of the Kannada language and later apologised following protests, even though there was no commercial motive. "If such a big person can apologise, and a similar statement has been issued after 75 years, and there is a commercial motive..." the court observed.
"You want to make a profit from the people of Karnataka, and you also maintain that you won't apologise. Even I want to watch the movie, and because of the controversy, I am unable to watch it. If you do not want to apologise, leave it. Why do you want to release it here?" the court questioned.
"The cinema is made to make profits, and why should the police give protection for your mistake? The people are demanding an apology from you. You have not denied making the statement; you have agreed to have made the statement and are maintaining that you won't apologise," the court stated.
"One statement can resolve the issue, and you are not tendering an apology. If you are not apologising, why are you releasing it in Karnataka?" the court pulled up the actor.
The counsel for Kamal Haasan submitted that the actor has not insulted the language and made the statement with love.
Meanwhile, office-bearers of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and Industries have commenced a meeting to decide on banning the release of Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' movie in the state.
Commenting on Kamal Haasan's issue, BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra stated on Tuesday, "The state government is not taking any stand in this regard. Kamal is a popular actor. His love for Tamil is understandable, but he can't insult the Kannada language. It's not too late; he should apologise to the people of Karnataka by correcting his unwise behaviour."

Thug Life box office advance booking: Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam's film sells tickets worth Rs 14 crore; surpasses PS-2

Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan are all set to reunite 38 years after their cult crime thriller Nayakan. However, if the advance booking of Thug Life is anything to go by, the buzz is lower than that of their recent individual hits. The advance booking picked up significantly on the eve of the release though. As Thug Life hits the cinemas today in the native Tamil language and in the dubbed Telugu and Hindi versions, it's sold maximum tickets in Tamil at Rs 5.3 crore. These include Rs 5.25 crore in the 2D version, Rs 11.63 lakh in the IMAX 2D version, and Rs 70,470 in the 4DX version. As per Sacnilk, the Hindi version has sold tickets worth Rs 26 lakh and the Telugu version has registered an advance booking of Rs 54 lakh. While all versions add up to Rs 6.16 crore, combined with the block seat booking, the total advance sales of Thug Life before its release stands at Rs 13.89 crore. This figure has surpassed the advance sales of Ratnam's last directorial, the 2023 hit period drama Ponniyin Selvan: II (Rs 11 crore), although the first part had a greater advance booking number (Rs 18.95 crore). Similarly, Thug Life has come close to the advance sales of Haasan's 2022 blockbuster action thriller Vikram (Rs 15.3 crore), but it's still shy of that of Haasan's last release, S Shankar's vigilante drama Indian 2 (Rs 17.9 crore) last year. Thug Life doesn't have much competition at the box office this week, which is why its numbers are likely to pick up over the weekend. In the Hindi market, it'll compete with Tarun Mansukhani's whodunit comedy Housefull 5, starring an ensemble led by Akshay Kumar. The box office collection of Thug Life would also be affected by it not releasing in Karntaka owing to an ongoing row between the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) and Haasan over his recent statement that suggesting that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil.' After the KFCC claimed they wouldn't let the film release in the state till Haasan apologises, Haasan moved Karnataka High Court on Tuesday. The producers of the movie informed the court they are not willing to screen the movie in Karnataka, unless there is a dialogue or a trialogue involving the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. The court also strongly criticised Haasan for his recent remark and observed a 'single apology could have resolved the situation.' When Amitabh Bachchan commended Aishwarya Rai's strength during Aaradhya's birth: ‘She had to struggle but…'

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are one of Bollywood's most admired couples, known not just for their star power, but also for their deep bond and family values. Their love story took a special turn in 2007 when they got engaged on 14 January at the Bachchan home, followed by a beautiful wedding on 20 April that same year. But it was in 2011 that the couple stepped into a whole new chapter, parenthood. The arrival of their daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan , marked a joyous occasion not only for Abhishek and Aishwarya , but for the entire Bachchan family. And no one was prouder than Aaradhya's grandfather, Bollywood superstar, Amitabh Bachchan . Big B stepped out with a big smile Soon after Aaradhya's birth, both Amitabh and Abhishek came out of their home, Jalsa, to meet the media and share the joyous news. It was during this interaction that Big B spoke about whom the baby resembled. He said, "It seems to me that she looks like Aishwarya. But as you all know, children's faces change daily. I still believe she looks like Aishwarya. Some people in the family think she resembles Jaya or Abhishek a little. " At that point, the family had not yet decided on the baby's name, but their excitement and joy were clear to see. On taking over the grandfather duties Amitabh also revealed that he had recently finished filming for his show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' and had no new projects lined up at the time. He said, "I am free now. 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' is over and I don't have any films at the moment. So I'm free, and I will now stay at home." Abhishek quickly added that his father would now be spending time at home to look after his granddaughter. Aishwarya's powerful labour journey The most moving part of the story came when Amitabh spoke about Aishwarya's strength during childbirth. His admiration for her was full of respect and pride. He shared, "She had to struggle but I commend her that she was in acute labour for a long time, almost 2-3 hours. But she persisted and said she wanted a normal delivery. She did not use any epidural or painkiller." In a time when many opt for medical relief during childbirth, Aishwarya's decision to go through the pain naturally stood out. Big B's words reflected not just her courage, but also the deep respect he had for her as his daughter-in-law.
