Don't use right to speech to hurt sentiments: Karnataka HC to Kamal Haasan

The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday reprimanded actor Kamal Haasan over his controversial remark on the origins of the Kannada language, questioning why the police should provide security for his mistake. "Don't use the Right to Speech to hurt sentiments," the court said. The bench, headed by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, made these observations while hearing a petition submitted by Kamal Haasan seeking security for the screening of his movie 'Thug Life' in Karnataka's theatres and multiplexes. Kamal Haasan had stirred controversy by stating that the Kannada language is derived from Tamil. He has also refused to apologise, despite widespread protests against him across the state. The court asked Kamal Haasan's counsel to clarify the actor's stand regarding tendering an apology and adjourned the matter until 2.30 p.m. The bench noted that a prominent person like C. Rajagopalachari had issued a similar statement in 1950 about the origins of the Kannada language and later apologised following protests, even though there was no commercial motive. "If such a big person can apologise, and a similar statement has been issued after 75 years, and there is a commercial motive..." the court observed. "You want to make a profit from the people of Karnataka, and you also maintain that you won't apologise. Even I want to watch the movie, and because of the controversy, I am unable to watch it. If you do not want to apologise, leave it. Why do you want to release it here?" the court questioned. "The cinema is made to make profits, and why should the police give protection for your mistake? The people are demanding an apology from you. You have not denied making the statement; you have agreed to have made the statement and are maintaining that you won't apologise," the court stated. "One statement can resolve the issue, and you are not tendering an apology. If you are not apologising, why are you releasing it in Karnataka?" the court pulled up the actor. The counsel for Kamal Haasan submitted that the actor has not insulted the language and made the statement with love. Meanwhile, office-bearers of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and Industries have commenced a meeting to decide on banning the release of Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' movie in the state. Commenting on Kamal Haasan's issue, BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra stated on Tuesday, "The state government is not taking any stand in this regard. Kamal is a popular actor. His love for Tamil is understandable, but he can't insult the Kannada language. It's not too late; he should apologise to the people of Karnataka by correcting his unwise behaviour."

Drake confirms return of OVO Fest in summer 2025

Drake has confirmed OVO Fest is returning in 2025. The 'God's Plan' hitmaker was a surprise guest during Central Cee's concert at History in Toronto on Saturday (24.05.25). As well as performing 'Nokia' from his joint LP with PartyNextDoor, '$ome $exy $ongs 4 U', he revealed his label's music event, which he founded in 2010, and last took place in 2022, will be back this summer. Drake said from the balcony: 'I'll see you this summer, by the way. OVO Fest will be back this year.' Teasing grime star Central Cee's appearance at the festival, he went on: "We'll need you there for that. 'That guy right there, that's my f****** brother. I've seen this guy from day one, a humble spirit, a hard worker. This man observed all he needed to observe. This guy put the work in, made the songs. He's one of the best people I know. The realest.' The 2022 OVO Fest featured performances from fellow rappers Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj. Meanwhile, Smiley recently teased Drake is working on new music. The 27-year-old rapper - who is signed to the 'Hotline Bling' hitmaker's record label, OVO Sound - claimed in a video on his Instagram Stories that Drake, 38, has been working on new material during events, as well as on the set of Drake's 'Nokia' music video. Smiley - whose real name is Alexander Morand, said in the clip - which was shared by Drake: "Brother, I'm telling you, I seen him the other day. 'We're at a party and he was in the other room by himself eating pasta with wired headphones writing music while we have a whole party going on. He's on a different mode right now. 'Even at the 'Nokia' video shoot, during breaks, he had a bunch of producers and he was just recording. "So he's in that crazy mode, right now. (sic)' Smiley - who collaborated with Drake on 'Over The Top' in 2021 - made the comments just weeks after Drake confirmed he is working on a new album, which he spilled is "a slap" on Adin Ross' livestream on Kick. Drake said: "Thank you to everybody that's streaming the album. Every time, every journey. Working on a new album, it's a slap." Asked if it's a solo record, he replied: "Yeah." '$ome $exy $ongs 4 U' was released in February and was an instant chart-topper. The five-time Grammy winner's confirmation of a new LP came just months after he told the crowd during his 'Anita Max Win' tour at RAC Arena in Peth, Australia, in February that he is working on an untitled LP, which he described as a "one-on-one talk" with his fans. Drake said of his first solo LP since 2023's 'For All the Dogs': "I got a new album coming out on Valentine's Day with PARTYNEXTDOOR. It's called '$ome $exy $ongs 4 U.' 'And you know, eventually when the time is right, Drizzy Drake alone by himself is gonna have to have a one-on-one talk to y'all. "When the time is right, I'll be back with another album, a one-on-one conversation with y'all that you need to hear."

India's outreach delegations brief Japan, UAE on terror threats posed by Pakistan

India in UAE The Indian delegation on Operation Sindoor to Japan and the United Arab Emitrates briefed these nations on Thursday. Multi-party delegations have been sent from India to 33 countries to inform them about terrorism emanating from Pakistan, and India's right to self-defence following Operation Sindoor. The delegation to the UAE, led by Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, held meetings with top Emirati leaders, including Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and Dr Ali Alnuaimi. The discussions focused on India and UAE's shared commitment to fighting terrorism in all forms. 'Together in the fight against terrorism,' the Indian Embassy in the UAE said, while sharing photos from the meetings. Meanwhile, in Japan, JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha led a delegation that included members from the BJP, Congress, TMC, CPI(M), and former diplomats. The team met Japanese foreign minister Takeshi Iwaya, who reiterated support for India's anti-terror stance and appreciated New Delhi's restraint. They also held meetings with former prime minister Yoshihide Suga, security committee leaders, and policy think tanks, all of whom expressed solidarity with India. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the deadly attack in Pahalgam, following which India launched targeted strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on 7 May. Pakistan attempted retaliatory strikes on 8, 9, and 10 May, but Indian forces responded decisively. Active hostilities ceased after military talks on 10 May. India's international outreach aims to build pressure on Pakistan and gather global backing to isolate terror networks. The remaining delegations will soon head to more capitals across the world to carry the message forward.

WB govt providing Rs 1.2 lakh per family under 'Banglar Bari (Gramin)' scheme to 12 lakh families: CM

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 20 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced that the State government was providing a total of Rs 1.2 lakh per family, in two instalments, under the 'Banglar Bari (Gramin)' scheme to 12 lakh poor and eligible families in the state for the construction of their houses. In a post on X, CM Mamata Banerjee shared, 'We are proud that our state government, entirely with its own funds, is providing a total of Rs 1,20,000 per family in two installments under the 'Banglar Bari (Gramin)' scheme to 12 lakh poor and eligible families of Bengal for building their houses.' The Chief Minister extended her greetings to all the beneficiaries. 'The first instalment, amounting to Rs 7,200 crore, was disbursed last December. Today, the second instalment of Rs 7,200 crore has also started being directly credited to their bank accounts. Thus, I am happy to say, our government has spent a total of Rs 14,400 crore from its own funds for the construction of houses under this scheme. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to everyone,' she added. CM Mamata Banerjee also announced that the scheme will benefit another 16 lakh eligible families, who will receive their first instalment in December 2025 and the second in May next year. 'We will also build houses for another 16 lakh eligible families. They will receive their first instalment in December this year and the second instalment in May 2026. I extend my advance best wishes to them as well,' she said. Meanwhile, earlier on May 14, CM Mamata Banerjee said there is a strong demand for industrialisation in the state and announced plans to build a new International Information Technology Entertainment and Cultural Park (IITEC Park) in Kolkata. The project will be developed in partnership with the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO). Speaking at a press conference, the Chief Minister said, 'There is great demand for industrialisation in West Bengal. We are trying to process and give clearance to the requests. In 23 districts, we will create big markets. The building will be constructed by private parties. We will give the land to the self-help group without money. The self-help group will get a permanent market. Out of the 23 districts, we have cleared 11 places. The remaining 12 are in process.' She mentioned that the districts where sites have been cleared include Purulia, Darjeeling, Bankura, Cooch Behar, Howrah, Jalpaiguri, Jhargram, Murshidabad, Paschim Medinipur, and North Dinajpur. 'Other places would be finalised in the next cabinet meeting. In Digha Jagannath Dham, a new market is also being planned. In Digha, an International Convention Centre has been built, which will be done in Siliguri. We have done Kalighat skywalk, Swami Vivekananda home, Sister Nivedita home, Tarapith and several other projects,' Banerjee said. 'With HIDCO in New Town under the PPP model, in 25 acres of land, we are going to build an International Information Technology Entertainment and Cultural Park (IITEC Park). A lot of programmes will be held here,' she added. (ANI)

LIV Golf star who ignored Rory McIlroy best of Irish at PGA Championship

Tom McKibbin fared best of the Irish quintet in action at the US PGA Championship on Thursday as he finished the day one under par to leave him six shots behind leader Jhonattan Vegas. The Holywood man began his round with a bogey, but birdies came on the seventh and eighth after five straight pars. He then bogeyed the tenth before back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th and finished his round with a bogey on the par-four 18th. McKibbin defied Rory McIlroy by signing with LIV Golf. When McKibbin made his decision, McIlroy cautioned him against giving up the PGA Tour card he had earned on the European Tour in 2024. However, the highly-rated prospect chose to forgo the opportunity in favour of a reported £4million LIV offer. Meanwhile, Masters champion McIlroy is facing a steep climb to secure consecutive major titles following a mistake-riddled opening round in the 107th US PGA Championship. McIlroy stumbled to a three-over-par 74, trailing Jhonattan Vegas by a formidable 10 shots. Vegas wrapped up his round just before 8pm with five birdies in the last six holes, making him the first Venezuelan player to lead a major. Vegas held a two-shot lead over Australia's Cam Davis and North Carolina's own Ryan Gerard, with Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald another stroke behind alongside Aaron Rai, Ryan Fox, Alex Smalley and Stephan Jaeger. England's Matt Fitzpatrick and Scotland's Robert MacIntyre were another stroke back on three under, joining US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Tyrrell Hatton. McIlroy's play-off victory over Justin Rose at Augusta National in April had placed him among the elite group of just six male golfers to complete a career grand slam, earning him a fifth major title, one less than Sir Nick Faldo. The world number two was also highly tipped to match Faldo's tally at the first opportunity at Quail Hollow, a venue where he claimed his first PGA Tour title in 2010 and has since celebrated three more victories, including last year. However, McIlroy, who only hit three fairways in regulation, was lucky not to find the water with several pulled tee shots and unsurprisingly chose not to speak to the media before heading straight to the range after his round. McIlroy was among the early birds teeing off from the 10th and despite missing both the fairway and green on the downhill par five, he managed to sink a birdie from 10 feet following a well-executed pitch. However, he immediately lost that advantage on the next hole with a disappointing three-putt. A wayward drive on the par-five 15th stopped just shy of the water, allowing McIlroy to hit a seven iron just short of the green and two-putt for another birdie. But after pulling another tee shot on the 16th, McIlroy's back foot slipped as he attempted to pitch the ball back into play. He missed the green with his approach, leading to a double bogey, a fate shared by his playing partners Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele. On the 17th, McIlroy narrowly missed chipping in for a birdie. Yet another pulled tee shot on the 18th stopped just before the creek running the length of the hole, from where he managed to find the putting surface and make par. Even when McIlroy did find a fairway, as he did on the first, his second shot landed in a greenside bunker and he failed to get up and down. His round fizzled out disappointingly with seven straight pars and another bogey on the ninth. Both Scheffler and Schauffele blamed mud on their balls for pulling their second shots into the water on the 16th. However, Scheffler rallied to record a two-under-par 69, while Schauffele finished with a 72. Donald, currently ranked 871st globally and only invited due to his Ryder Cup captaincy, turned back the clock with a bogey-free round of 67, while Fox and Smalley capitalised on their last-minute entries into the tournament. Fox clinched his spot in the competition on Sunday by sinking a chip shot on the first playoff hole, securing his maiden PGA Tour victory in Myrtle Beach. Meanwhile, first alternate Smalley was ushered in on Wednesday afternoon when Sahith Theegala had to pull out due to injury. Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington finished their rounds on two-over-par, while Seamus Power is one-over after an opening round 72.
