Canada's Conservatives urge Ottawa to label Lawrence Bishnoi gang a terror group
In a post on X, on Monday, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre stated, 'Liberal open borders immigration allowed Bishnoi terrorists and gangsters to come to Canada and terrorise our communities. Conservatives call: Ban the Bishnoi terrorists; arrest and deport all its members now.'
His post followed a letter that was sent by Conservative MP Frank Caputo to Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree, on Monday.
Caputo, the party's critic (or shadow minister) for public safety, wrote, 'I implore you to list the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist entity to provide law enforcement and all levels of government with the tools necessary to address the Gang's activities. The designation would permit the government to push back against the Gang with financial, criminal and property sanctions.'
In July, the leader of the Canadian province of Alberta joined her British Columbia counterpart in calling upon the Federal Government fur such a designation.
In a statement, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and the province's Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis had said, 'The Lawrence Bishnoi Gang is a transnational criminal network responsible for violence, extortion, drug trafficking and targeted killings, including here in Canada. Its reach is global, and its intent is criminal and violent.'
They added that the formal designation of the Bishnoi gang as a terror organisation 'will unlock critical powers, allowing provincial and municipal-level law enforcement agencies to access the necessary tools and resources needed to effectively disrupt operations and protect our people.'
BC Premier David Eby had made a similar request to Ottawa in June.
Last month, responding to questions from media, Canada's Minister for Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree said a 'legal threshold' had to met for such a designation but the matter was under consideration of the country's law enforcement agencies.
The Bishnoi gang has been linked to extortion attempts in Ontario, BC and Alberta. However, earlier this month, the outlet CBC News reported that arrests made in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, in relation to an extortion series there were of persons associated with the Brothers Keepers gang, which originated in BC.
India has also sought action against members of the Bishnoi gang operating from Canada including Satinderjeet Singh, better known as Goldy Brar, who is wanted in connection with the murder of entertainer and politician Sidhu Moose Wala in May 2022.
In 2022, India flagged to Canada its concerns over 'translocational and transnational' gangs operating in its territory. Investigative agencies also exchanged information about seven Indian gang leaders based in Canada directing gang activity in India and their growing nexus with pro-Khalistan elements.

In England and Wales, all fishermen above 13 must apply for a rod licence to catch freshwater species like carp. A one-day licence to catch fish costs around $10 (Rs 875). The UK Foreign Office said this was an 'administrative oversight.' Lammy said he had bought the licences as soon as he discovered the error. He said he wrote to the Environment Agency to report himself. 'He also thanked them for their work protecting Britain's fisheries,' a Foreign Office spokesperson said. Lammy now faces a fine of up to $3400 (Rs 3 lakh). JD Vance has praised David Lammy as a 'good friend' and 'very, very gracious host'. Its gardens alone comprise 40 acres and include a lake, maze, parterre and a double hexagonal walled kitchen garden. It is also surrounded by 500 acres of woodland. This is in the first time it has been in the middle of controversy. In 1999, the then Labour foreign secretary Robin Cook invited scandal after his ex-wife Margaret slammed him for taking his current wife Gaynor Regan to the estate. Regan had been Cook's mistress during his marriage to Margaret. Margaret in her memoir claimed Cook was a womaniser and a drunk. Chevening House in Kent has a long and storied history. US Threatens India Of Additional Tariffs If Trump-Putin Peace Deal Fails
New York: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that the secondary tariffs on India could go up if "things don't go well" during talks between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. Last week, Donald Trump imposed tariffs totalling 50 per cent on India, including 25 per cent for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil that will come into effect from August 27. "I think everyone has been frustrated with President Putin. We expected that he would come to the table in a more fulsome way. It looks like he may be ready to negotiate. And we put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. I could see, if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up," Scott Bessent said in an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday. When asked about China, the main buyer of Russian crude, Bessent said he is "not going to get ahead of the President, but the President is the best at creating leverage for himself, and he will make it clear to President Putin that all options are on the table." On whether sanctions can go up or loosened, Bessent said, "Sanctions can go up, they can be loosened. They can have a definitive life. They can go on indefinitely. You know, there's this Russian shadow fleet of ships around the world that I think we could crack down on." He added that even as Trump is meeting with Putin, the Europeans "need to join us" and need to be willing to "put on these secondary sanctions." Bessent recalled that at the G7 meeting in Canada this year, when he asked the leaders at the table whether they were willing to put a 200 per cent secondary tariff on China. "And you know what, everybody wanted to see what kind of shoes they were wearing." He added that Trump is committed to ending the bloodshed in the Ukraine war. "It's put up or shut up time. The President is creating his own leverage. We need the Europeans to come in and help create more leverage," Bessent said. Responding to the tariffs, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. "Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," it said.

2 Bishnoi gang members wanted in Fazilka murder case arrested
1 2 Mohali: In a major breakthrough against organised crime, the Punjab Police's anti-gangster task force (AGTF) arrested two most-wanted operatives of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang from Patiala–Ambala Highway near Shambhu village. An Austria-made 9mm Glock pistol, along with six live cartridges, was recovered from their possession, director general of police (DGP), Punjab, Gaurav Yadav said on Thursday. The arrested have been identified as Akshay Delu and Ankit Bishnoi alias Kakkar, both residents of Khairpur village, Abohar (Fazilka). They were operating under the instructions of their foreign-based handlers, Anmol Bishnoi and Arzoo Bishnoi. DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed the duo fled to Nepal after committing the murder of Bharat Ratan alias Vicky in Fazilka on May 2, and returned on their handlers' orders to carry out another sensational crime in Punjab.
