Oil up 8%, but India may not feel much pain
NEW DELHI: The Israel-Iran conflict may not immediately disrupt global oil supplies , but the tensions could keep prices elevated, squeezing oil marketing companies' margins while having little impact on consumer prices, according to executives at Indian refining firms. An Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, followed by Iran's vow to retaliate, sent shockwaves through the oil market on Friday, pushing benchmark Brent crude up 8% to $75 a barrel. "It is in the interest of the US, Iran, and other West Asian producers to keep oil flowing without disruption," said a refinery executive, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "Producers in the region will not want their trade disrupted, and Trump will be wary of global supply shocks that could push up US pump prices." "India's crude supply basket is currently well-diversified and West Asia has a comparatively smaller footprint than it was a decade ago," said M K Surana, the CEO of Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd and former chief of HPCL . Russia currently supplies about 40% of India's crude imports. "More than supply, it's the price risk that's more relevant to India. This can weigh on oil marketing companies' margins." "Structurally, the global oil market supports lower crude oil prices with increased OPEC+ supplies and weak demand growth. But escalating geopolitical tensions brings in risk premium in oil prices, higher freight and insurance costs," Surana said. "Speculation creates upward momentum in prices." Despite the rise in crude prices, domestic fuel rates are unlikely to be affected as pump prices in India are already at elevated levels, said another executive. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

'Gen AI' knowledge now increasingly demanded in job postings: Report
BENGALURU: It's not just information technology companies, now job roles across various sectors demand generative AI knowledge. Regional hubs have emerged for jobs that either use or help develop generative AI. In Karnataka, about 2.4% of job postings mention generative AI, ahead of 2.3% in Telangana, according to recent data from global job matching and hiring platform Indeed. Maharashtra has the second-largest volume of generative AI opportunities and the largest volume of total job opportunities, but it's mentioned in just 1% of job postings, the platform said. On Friday, Indeed released its report for the month of May that says job postings have rebounded strongly during the month, up 8.9%, following eight consecutive monthly declines. However, they are 1.8% lower than a year ago. Indeed's data shows that, as of May 2025, 1.5% of Indian job postings explicitly mention generative AI in their job descriptions, more than doubling over the past year. Generative AI opportunities are now increasingly widespread as about 12.5% of data analytics roles mention generative AI, ahead of software development (3.6%) and scientific research (3.1%). It's also commonly mentioned across a range of office roles, including marketing (1.1% of job postings) and management (0.9%). Callam Pickering, Indeed's APAC Senior Economist, said, "Indian job creation continues to outpace other countries because of the nation's transition towards more formal economic arrangements." "As the nation transitions, job creation across the formal sector will be much stronger than overall employment growth nationwide, and we have consistently seen that in recent years. Other economies are not going through a transition of this nature," he added. Though software development opportunities have declined recently, the sector continues to have the largest volume of job opportunities on the platform, as it accounts for around one-in-five Indian job postings. It highlights how prominent the tech sector has been to India's emerging formal sector, with multinationals trying to tap into the country's large talent pool. The report also mentions that job postings in around 80% of occupations in India increased over the past three months. Gains were largest in childcare (27%), personal care & home health (25%), education (24%), and production & manufacturing (22%).

Iran-Israel conflict stalls market recovery as Sensex, Nifty fall again
India's equity market is facing heightened selling pressure as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East escalated following an Israeli attack on Iranian soil. The strike and its ripple effects, including rising crude oil prices and global market volatility, have stalled the recovery seen in Indian equities since the April 2025 lows. Almost all the Asian and European exchanges closed in the red on Friday while American exchanges opened with sharp cuts. 'Rising tensions in the Middle East after Israel attacked Iran drove investors to safe-haven assets like gold as riskier equities continued to face a battering. This, along with fresh concerns of the US likely to impose unilateral tariffs over the next few weeks and higher valuations of domestic equities, resulted in consolidation of markets,' said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities. After falling 1% each on Thursday, benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 fell again on Friday. The Sensex settled 573.38 points or 0.70% lower at 81,118.60, and the Nifty was down 169.60 points or 0.68% at 24,718.60. India VIX spiked over 7%, reflecting heightened volatility and investor anxiety. On the sectoral front, the Nifty PSU Bank index underperformed, shedding 1.18%, followed by losses in the Nifty Metal and Nifty Bank indices, which declined about 1% each. The broader market also remained under pressure, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices slipping 0.4% and 0.5%, respectively.
