San Angelo READS, pop-up event happening Friday
The family-friendly event with more than 70 community partners is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday at CRC Roofers Coliseum, 50 E. 43rd St.
There will be free school supplies and backpacks, books, food and Kona shaved ice for the first 300 kids. There will also be free services, games, activities and giveaways for all ages.
There will be vision screenings for children and adults as well as an immunization clinic.
Helpers will be on-site to help with registration for the 2025-2026 school year.
There will be visits from Clifford the Big Red Dog, H-E-Buddy, Whataguy and other local celebrities, according to a news release.
"Last year, more than 1,000 people joined us, and we're excited to make this year's event even bigger and better," the release stated. "This event is powered by generous local partners who are donating supplies, services, and their time to support students across San Angelo. We're grateful for their commitment to ensuring every child has the tools and support they need for a successful school year."

The rap mogul's former girlfriend, Virginia "Gina" Huynh, who identified herself as the previously unnamed 'Victim 3' in his sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy trial, penned a letter to New York Judge Arun Subramanian supporting Combs' request for bail ahead of his Oct. 3 sentencing. In Huynh's letter—submitted to the courts Aug. 3 and obtained by E! News—she detailed knowing Combs for 'many years in both a personal and professional capacity,' and that she will use her knowledge of him 'a father, a family man and a businessman' to share 'observations about his character and to respectfully request that the Court permit his release on bond while the case proceeds.' While describing her relationship with Combs as 'not always perfect,' she wrote that the rapper 'was willing to acknowledge his mistakes and make better decisions in the future.' More from E! 'By the time our relationship ended, he embodied an energy of love, patience and gentleness that was markedly different from his past behavior. To my knowledge, he has not been violent for many years, and he has been committed to being a father first.' She also pointed to the trial being Combs' first criminal case and that 'throughout the investigation and proceedings he has been cooperative, respectful and compliant.' She added she does not view the 55-year-old—who is dad to seven children—as a danger to either herself 'or the community,' noting, 'He has substantial ties to his family and community, including children who depend on him for emotional and financial support.' She added that she believes Combs would adhere 'to all conditions imposed and will not jeopardize his freedom or the well-being of his family,' and that allowing him to be at home would 'support the healing process for all involved.' E! News has reached out to Combs' legal team as well as reps for Huynh for comment but has not yet heard back. While Huynh was originally supposed to be called as a witness in Combs' trial, in the days before it began the prosecution shared it was having trouble to get in touch with Victim 3 or her attorneys. She ultimately didn't testify. At the conclusion of the seven-week trial, a New York jury found the rapper guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution but acquitted him on sex trafficking and racketeering charges. He could face up to 20 years in prison for the convictions, though his counsel is seeking 21 to 27 months while prosecutors are asking for 51 to 63 months (approximately four to five years), per NBC News. On July 2, Judge Subramanian confirmed Combs would remain behind bars until his October sentencing hearing, though Combs' legal team submitted another request for bail on July 29—one opposed by the prosecution. In his July 2 ruling, Subramanian cited Combs' "years-long pattern of violence" as a reason for him to remain behind bars, adding that he "continues to be a danger to others and unable to follow the law." Soulja Boy Arrested on Weapons Charge During Los Angeles Traffic Stop

The "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" hitmaker (real name DeAndre Cortez Way) was arrested on a weapons charge during a traffic stop in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, E! News has confirmed. The incident happened just after 2:30 a.m. on August 3 when police made a traffic stop near the intersection of Melrose Ave and Genesee Ave during which Soulja Boy, a passenger in the car, was detained and subsequently arrested for carrying a firearm as a convicted felon, the Los Angeles Police Department stated. The 35-year-old was then booked just after 6 a.m. at the LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center, according to inmate records provided by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. It's unclear if Soulja Boy has since been released or if he is still in custody. E! News has reached out to Soulja Boy's rep for comment and has yet to hear back. The rapper More from E! Back in 2019, Soulja Boy served over three months behind bars for a probation violation after being arrested for carrying firearms and ammunition, per the Los Angeles County Superior Courts. Additionally, the rapper's latest arrest comes just a few months after he'd been ordered to pay an unnamed former assistant after being found liable of assault, sexual battery, gender violence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and failure to pay wages. Back in April, a California jury awarded his accuser $4 million in compensatory damages, per the plaintiff's legal team. Soulja Boy's lawyer Rickey Ivie slammed the decision at the time. "It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial," he said in a statement to NBC News. "Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case."
