19 Costars Who Started Dating But Kept Their Relationship A Total Secret As Long As Possible
1. First, Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney began dating during It's Always Sunny Season 2, but kept it a secret from their costars for two seasons. On an episode of Armchair Expert, Kaitlin revealed, "It was so much fun. And terrifying. We were so scared they were going to hate us." Eventually, they revealed their relationship to the cast, with Mary Elizabeth Ellis recalling to BuzzFeed, "Kaitlin just starts crying and says, 'I love him. I love him so much, you guys. He's such a great person. We don't want you guys to be mad at us because we're dating and on the show.'"
Speaking further about falling in love with Rob, Kaitlin told Armchair Expert, "Like, once I fell in love with him, I realized that I was deeply in love with him in a way that I hadn't been in love with him before. And then we started secretly dating, and he really just wanted to be casual, but I had this hubristic confidence that this person is completely in love with me but he has no idea."
Kaitlin and Rob have been married for 17 years now, and share two children.
2. Eliza Taylor and Bob Morley starred as Clarke Griffin and Bellamy Blake on The 100 from 2014 to 2020. In June 2019, the duo shocked everyone by announcing that not only had they been dating behind the scenes, but they had recently gotten married. In a since-deleted tweet, Eliza said, "Recently I married my best friend and soul mate." And Bob added, "It is with such a full heart that I call @MisElizaJane my wife. This is something we both cherish very deeply and are beyond happy. Please remember to be respectful and kind to one another. Be well be kind."
At San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, Eliza and Bob talked about their decision to keep their relationship a secret for so long, with Bob saying, "We value our privacy, I think," with Eliza adding that they preferred to keep their "private life private." In 2022, they welcomed their first child together, too.
3. Mary Mouser and Tanner Buchanan began starring together in Cobra Kai in 2018. For six seasons, they played Samantha LaRusso and Robby Keene, respectively. During the final season premiere in 2025, Mary and Tanner walked the red carpet together and showed off matching rings. Afterward, they took to Instagram and, in a joint post, wrote, "We're so happy to finally share that we're engaged."
They continued, saying, "This is such a special moment in our lives, the closing of one chapter and celebrating the continuation of another. We're so grateful for the love and support, and though we're partial to having our private moments, we're excited to share this check-in to our world."
4. Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki dated for two years starting around The Big Bang Theory Season 2 in 2008. They managed to keep their relationship a secret from most of the cast for a long time before admitting that they'd been seeing each other. In The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series, Kaley recalled, "We call Jim [Parsons] on speaker, and Johnny says, 'I'm in love with Kaley,' or 'I really want to be with Kaley,' and Jim goes, 'Ah! Does she know?!' I started laughing and yelled, 'Yes, I know! I'm here!'"
When the duo broke up, they also elected not to tell the cast and crew of The Big Bang Theory right away. Meanwhile, the public reportedly didn't even know they were a couple offscreen before they broke up.
Speaking about their breakup, Kaley said, "We were together for a long time. We really adored each other, and we were lucky because as our breakup was happening, there was no foul play, there was nothing bad about our relationship...it just ended." Johnny added, "We continue to love one another, just in other ways."
5. Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford first met when they were cast as Princess Leia and Han Solo in Star Wars: A New Hope in 1976, with their onscreen relationship being one of the most memorable film love stories. 40 years later, in her memoir, The Princess Diarist, Carrie revealed that she and Harrison had an affair while filming A New Hope. Discussing their first weekend together, Carrie wrote, "I reached into my bag for my keys. Leia found them and led him into the building to her apartment, and Carrie spent the rest of the night making sequels with her future cinematic husband. How would it all end? Would it all end? And how would I look when it did?"

Harrison was married to his first wife during the affair with Carrie. She detailed their relationship while filming in her memoir, which was published only a month before her sudden death in 2016.
Speaking about the revelation of their affair in 2017, Harrison t old GQ, "It was strange for me," but declined to talk about it further.
6. After starring together in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in 2010, Aubrey Plaza and Michael Cera quietly dated for a little over a year. However, Aubrey didn't confirm the relationship until 2016. On an episode of RuPaul's podcast, Aubrey said, "He's a very special ... I mean, we love each other. We're still really good friends. He's just a weird little freak, and we speak the same language." Then, in 2023, Michael revealed to Rolling Stone that he and Aubrey almost got married.
He told the publication, "We were driving through Vegas, and we almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married. I think the idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other 'my ex-husband' and 'my ex-wife' at like…20."
7. Maureen McCormick and Barry Williams starred as Marcia and Greg Brady on The Brady Bunch from 1969 to 1974. Nearly 18 years after the series ended, Barry revealed in his book that he and Maureen kissed off-screen while filming the famous Hawaii episodes. Then, Maureen told the Today Show in 2018 that she and Barry had an "on-again, off-again" relationship while filming. In a 2025 episode of his podcast, A Very Brady Re-Run, Barry spoke about their relationship again, saying, "It was sort of like on-again, off-again with Maureen and I throughout the years. There was always a little dance being played."
On the same podcast episode, Christopher Knight, who starred as Peter, revealed to Barry, "You two were looking a little bit close, a little bit less like brother and sister and more like — you were looking at her, at times, the way the directions in the script probably told Charlie [Marcia's love interest] to look at Marcia."
8. Saoirse Ronan and Slow Horses star Jack Lowden met on the set of Mary Queen of Scots in 2018. Saoirse played Mary, while Jack played Mary's second husband, Henry Stuart. The duo never publicly confirmed their relationship, with Jack even avoiding a question about it in 2019. Then, in 2024, the duo got married and walked their first red carpet together.
Speaking about marrying Jack, Saoirse revealed to USA Today, "I feel like I'm part of a group, which I never thought I would have. I used to think, 'You'll never have friends. You'll never have a partner.' I was so in my own world in a lot of ways. So now, to feel like I've got a very rich personal and social life — it's so precious to me."
9. Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys began starring as Elizabeth and Philip Jennings on The Americans in 2013. The duo quietly began dating before publicly confirming their romance in 2014. In a 2023 interview with Andy Cohen, Matthew revealed that he and Keri managed to keep their relationship a secret "about a solid year" while filming. He joked, "It's those sneaky [production assistants] who get onto it."
Matthew revealed he and Keri actually first met years prior, like around the time Felicity ended in 2002, at a party hosted by Jennifer Grey. They even exchanged numbers, and Matthew recalled leaving a very amusing voicemail for her while he was very drunk. He added, "Which she didn't find charming."
Keri and Matthew have been together since 2014 and share one child.
10. Saved by the Bell costars Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Elizabeth Berkley, who played Zack Morris and Jessie Spano, actually dated while they starred on the show together for four seasons. Their offscreen relationship remained a secret until Mark talked about it on a 2019 episode of Anna Faris Is Unqualified. He said, "When you're working on a set, and we were young, there's no one around really. I mean, you work and live in a bubble."
Due to their demanding filming schedules, Mark said he didn't really have time to date outside of the world of Saved by the Bell, which made the set a constant place where costars were dating each other. He said, "All of us dated at one point or another — it was incestuous!"
11. In 1996, Julia Roberts made a memorable guest appearance on Friends where she went on a date with Chandler, played by Matthew Perry. Then, 26 years later, in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Matthew officially confirmed that he and Julia dated offscreen for about three months. Of their breakup, he wrote, "Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough."
He continued, writing, "I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts."
Following his death in 2023, Julia remembered Matthew, saying, "The sudden passing of anybody so young is heartbreaking."
12. Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson dated offscreen during the early seasons of Dawson's Creek. When asked about their relationship in a 1998 interview with Rolling Stone, Katie said, "I'm just going to say that I met somebody last year. I fell in love, I had my first love, and it was something so incredible and indescribable that I will treasure it always." Then, in 2003, Joshua publicly talked about their relationship, telling Conan O'Brien, "In the very beginning Katie and I did have a romance." He also said it was "a little difficult" when, a year after they broke up, Joey and Pacey got together on screen.
Joshua joked, "'Cause there's nothing more fun than going to work with your ex-girlfriend every day. Sorry, Katie, I love ya, but it was a little difficult there for a while."
At the time, following their breakup, Katie also told Rolling Stone, "And that I feel so fortunate because he's now one of my best friends. It's weird, it's almost like a Dawson-and-Joey type thing now. He's been in the business so long, and he's really helped me. I respect him as a friend and as a professional."
13. In her 2022 memoir, Out of the Corner, Jennifer Grey revealed that she and Matthew Broderick secretly dated while filming Ferris Bueller's Day Off in 1986, even going as far as hiding it from the cast and crew. She wrote, "I was as surprised as anyone when our relationship morphed from on-screen sibling rivalry to off-screen illicit romance." She revealed that Matthew had reportedly been seeing someone else, so they broke up until he called off the other relationship. Jennifer and Matthew went public with their romance after filming wrapped.
In 2022, while appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, Jennifer revealed that she went from being engaged to Matthew in 1988 to being engaged to Johnny Depp "in the same month."
14. Despite being two of the most talked about stars of the '80s, River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton managed to keep their relationship under the radar while filming The Mosquito Coast together in 1986. They dated for three years, making their first big red carpet appearance together at the 1989 Academy Awards. Shortly after, they broke up, with Martha saying, per the book In Search of River Phoenix, "When we split up, a lot of it was that I had learned that screaming, fighting, and begging wasn't going to change him. He had to change himself, and he didn't want to yet."
Since his sudden death from a drug overdose in 1993, Martha has reportedly made it a "rule" not to talk about him. However, they remained close friends until his death.
After The Mosquito Coast, they also starred together in Running on Empty in 1988.
15. Mischa Barton and Ben McKenzie starred together as Ryan Atwood and Marissa Cooper on The O.C., starting in 2003. Their characters were notably one of the central relationships in the show until Mischa left after Season 3. Over 20 years later, while appearing on Call Her Daddy, Mischa confirmed that she and Ben actually dated behind the scenes, too. She called the relationship "complicated," especially because she was 17 and he was 25 at the time.
Fox
"I had no idea what I was doing, you know? And I think that kind of set things off on the wrong foot, too, because it was like, you know, people hook up on these shows and whatever, and like, these things happen," Mischa continued. "But it was, um, we threw ourselves very into it very fast. And then, like, you know, when you break up and like, things don't work and they see you dating other people. Notoriously, there was a lot of inter-dating on that show."
16. While Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's relationship was very public, they managed to keep it pretty private as long as they could. When filming began on New Moon, Kristen notably denied the romance rumors. The relationship wasn't publicly confirmed until 2010, when a producer accidentally let slip that they were dating, telling Time, "The thing I do think about is, Oh my god, I hope they stay together. Because it could be awkward on set in the next movie if they have a huge falling out." It wasn't until 2011 that Kristen finally called Rob her "boyfriend" in an interview with British GQ.

All in all, the duo dated for roughly three years, during production on a majority of the Twilight films. In 2012, their breakup was highly publicized after Kristen issued an apology after she was photographed kissing her Snow White and the Huntsman director.
17. Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton met while starring together in the 2019 play Betrayal in London. Then, they continued starring together when the play transferred to Broadway. They started quietly dating and didn't attend their first red carpet together until 2021. The following year, Tom confirmed their engagement to the LA Times, saying, "I'm very happy."

In 2022, they welcomed their first child together.
Since then, the couple has still remained ultra private but has talked about each other in numerous interviews. When Zawe joined the MCU, too, with The Marvels, Tom told The Tonight Show,"My other half is in The Marvels, and I'm very proud of her."
18. Austin Nichols joined One Tree Hill in Season 6 as Julian Baker, who eventually became the love interest of Brooke Davis, played by Sophia Bush. Shortly after joining, rumors began that the duo were dating offscreen. In 2010, Sophia revealed to E! News that they had actually been "dating off and on for the past four years." The duo dated until 2012, but have remained very close friends, with Austin being a frequent guest on her Drama Queens podcast.

On the Drama Queens podcast, Hilarie Burton even talked about how when Austin joined the show, she initially thought he was interested in her, but she came to find out one of the reasons he booked the show was to be closer to Sophia, whom he had previously dated at the time.
Hilarie recalled, "All of a sudden, Austin looks really distracted, like, looking over my shoulder. And I was like, 'Oh, what's he looking at?' I turn around, and Sophia has entered the armory in, like, a cashmere turtleneck and tweed blazer ... And I see heart emojis in Austin's eyeballs, and I just turn around, and I could still feel it in my bones, the Oh, no! I had so seriously misjudged that situation."
19. And finally, Zendaya and Tom Holland met while starring together as MJ and Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016. At the time, rumors spread that the duo were secretly in a relationship, but they maintained that they were good friends. Five years later, photos were published that revealed Zendaya and Tom kissing in a car, effectively confirming their offscreen romance. The duo continues to remain as private as possible, and in 2025, it was revealed that they are engaged.

After attending the premieres together for Spider-Man: No Way Home, the duo have not formally walked a red carpet together since, but they often reference each other in interviews and on social media.

Perspective: Surprise! Married parents aren't miserable — they're America's happiest adults
'Steve! (martin) A Documentary in 2 Pieces' covers the eclectic career of one of the world's most successful comedians, Steve Martin. Comedy, acting, playwriting, art collecting, banjo playing — Martin's oeuvre encompassed an impressive array of interests and his friends, which included prominent actors, writers, artists and musicians. But Martin still found happiness elusive even at the heights of fame. Discovering a single empty table at one of his normally sold-out venues provoked enough insecurity to switch from comedy to movies, but the angst and loneliness persisted — until he married at 61 and had a child at 67. 'My whole life is backwards,' Martin observed in 2024. 'How did I go from riddled with anxiety in my 30s, to 75 and really happy? How did this happen?' The happiest group of Americans, according to leading marriage expert and researcher Brad Wilcox of the University of Virginia, are people married with children — pushing back in his data-based book 'Get Married' on stereotypes of childless people as less stressed and more satisfied than parents. Wilcox's academic data challenges a popular narrative that emerged yet again when prominent pop singer Chappell Roan claimed 'all parents are miserable.' 'All of my friends who have kids are in hell,' Roan explained on the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast, setting off an explosion of commentary everywhere, from BuzzFeed to MSNBC to the Irish Independent, with many pushing back, but others agreeing that raising little kids in particular can be extremely difficult. 'Children are often a strain on marriage, and they seem to lead to a dip in marital quality,' Wilcox concedes, but 'the overall picture of marriage and parenthood is rosier than the popular press would suggest.' This familial contentment, however, depends on a selfless mindset, a 'we before me' approach crucial to making marriage meaningful and parenthood deeply fulfilling. 'When people get married, what do they do with their finances?' asked a recent caller to Dave Ramsey's financial advice podcast. She seemed taken aback by Ramsey's response that husbands and wives combine everything, asking, 'What if one person makes more than the other?' 'You're not a partnership, you're a marriage,' Ramsey pushed back. 'My wife doesn't have an income. I do not have an income. WE have an income.' Interestingly, couples with separate financial accounts are 20% more likely to divorce, according to a study conducted by the University of Colorado–Boulder. The same study also found that couples who shared their money were happier in their relationships than those who separated their accounts (including those who had both joint and separate accounts). An Indiana University study that randomly assigned newly married couples to joint accounts, separate accounts or any arrangement of the couple's choice found that, after two years, the joint-account couples 'exhibited significantly greater relationship quality' than the other couples. Wilcox brings up both studies to illustrate the effects a family-first approach has on marriage and family life — implications that are not minor. While marital advice today often emphasizes personal me-time, personal identity forging and the pursuit of personal ambitions, couples who end up sharing more in common are more likely to report happier marriages. And it's not just money. According to a YouGov survey, couples sharing the same last name not only held a stronger sense of family identity, but were more likely to be happily married and less likely to have plans to divorce than those who didn't. Sharing names, turning down job opportunities that detract from marital obligations and making personal sacrifices for each other reflects selfless attitudes that make a big difference in marriage, according to the State of Our Unions Survey of 2022. After controlling for education, income and race, the survey found 'we-before-me' couples much more likely to report being 'very happy' in marriage and also more likely to say divorce is 'not at all likely' in the future than couples with a 'my own needs first' attitude. Marriages in which only one spouse takes on most of the selflessness, however, 'can run aground' according to Wilcox. The sacrifices need to be mutual. Writer Julian Adorney shares that 'my marriage to my wife works because both of us practice a sort of self-emptying love.' He goes on to critique the book,'The Value of Others,' which ultimately views marriage as a dying institution to be replaced by gig-economy relationships lasting not 'till death' but 'until this relationship no longer provides adequate value for us both.' Today, notions of sacrifice and selflessness must not only compete with transactional-economic models, but also with a plethora of demands that make up what Northwestern University Professor Eli Finkel labels today's 'All-or-Nothing Marriage.' Finkel's book by the same name explains that 21st century couples hold high expectations for a partner to 'be all things to them.' Such inflated expectations of personal gratification and self-actualization, Finkel acknowledges, create a fragile basis for lasting unions and could be considered a major force behind family instability rates. Yet the book has some blind spots. 'Something you will not find discussed anywhere in All-or-Nothing Marriage is the importance of sacrifice,' writes marriage and family professor Scott Sibley. Marriage expert Alan Hawkins emphasizes the importance of helping couples understand that there are seasons of life when most couples must live in the valleys, sacrificing some lofty ambitions to manage busy lives with children and work. Rather than working to find their highest fulfillment, he says, couples sometimes just need help to 'keep things good enough to make it through a stressful season of life together.' Demands for transcendence, wholeness, meaning, worth and communion within a single relationship, theorized Sarah K. Balstrup in an insightful study, burdens romantic relationships with a host of needs formerly satisfied through religion. Relationships, she writes, 'have become the primary mythology of the sacred in the collective tongue' of Western culture; however, mere mortals have difficulty providing the needs that religion and God formerly satisfied. Wilcox's 'Get Married' book delves into the ways religious affiliation meets the higher needs of couples while prioritizing values like selflessness, fidelity and the worth of child-raising, according to an impressive array of research and data. To summarize, church attenders are significantly happier in marriages, less likely to divorce and are more satisfied with their lives in general. Moreover, religious couples exhibit greater sexual fidelity and commitment, and higher levels of relationship quality, including greater sexual frequency and satisfaction. Not all religious couples are happy, Wilcox acknowledges, but those who regularly attend church, mosque or synagogue tap into social networks that encourage self-denial and healthy marital interaction while discouraging behaviors that derail relationships. Add to that a meaningful sense of the cosmos and rituals that help couples deal with suffering (shared prayer is a predictor of higher quality marriages), and even a good–enough marriage with family-first priorities may not need to spend 24/7 on self-actualization to reach higher levels of happiness. In the divorce drama 'Kramer vs. Kramer,' the highest-grossing film of 1979, Dustin Hoffman's character Ted, whose wife has left him, gradually trades his workaholism for a deep father-son bond forged through countless meals, chores, conversations, and a harrowing trip to the emergency room. Ted's trajectory also includes a growing selflessness born of sacrificing for another's growth. When Ted faces an uphill battle for child custody, he sits down with a legal pad one night to weigh the pros and cons of keeping Billy. As the con list lengthens with exhausting annoyances, the pro list remains vacant until Ted slips into Billy's room and holds his sleeping child. After that, Ted calls the lawyer and says he's willing to fight for custody. The intangible benefits of having kids are difficult to calculate in the short-term, day-to-day frenzy of meal-making, mess-cleaning, tantrum-throwing and adult-child boomeranging that is child-rearing. Maybe that's why society's advantages vs. disadvantages list of having kids circa 2025 looks similar to Ted's — minus the tender child-hugging that wipes out the cons in the end. Wilcox explains that, amid the divorce surges of the 1970s, fertility levels fell below the replacement rate for the first time in United States history, only to rise to replacement level until around 2009. After that came a decade of ambivalence about child-bearing that saw cultural forces of individualism, hedonism and workism take precedence over kids, who limit, says Wilcox, 'options, choices, and freedom — and force us to grow up.' The 'Childfree Life' depicted in the iconic 2013 Time cover story replete with a vacationing couple on the beach became more appealing, as did more time spent at the office building careers. Currently, childlessness has now risen to the point that 1 in 4 young women today will have no posterity. Contributing to the perception that children aren't worth it may have been a 2016 study reporting that parents are 13% less happy than their childless peers. However, 'there is only one problem with this handwringing about parenthood,' Wilcox points out. 'It no longer fits the data ... today, that is most definitely not true.' Current research backs up this reversal. Parents, especially married parents, are more likely to report their lives are more meaningful and happier than nonparents while childless Americans are more likely to report their lives are lonely and less meaningful and happy. Indeed, 'today's men and women (ages 18 to 55) in their prime who have children report the greatest happiness and the most meaning in their lives,' writes Wilcox, 'even after controlling for factors like education, race, and ages.' Wilcox refers to psychologist Paul Bloom's insightful book 'The Sweet Spot: The Pleasures of Suffering and the Search for Meaning' to explain the paradox of children bringing both distress and happiness into parents' lives. While too much suffering can be debilitating, too little struggle in a life of pleasure and pursuits of the self leads to meaningless and unhappiness. The ups and downs of parenthood provide opportunities for adversity and stress — along with generous doses of meaning, compassion and greater selflessness that even medical studies correlate with 'authentic-durable happiness.' While marriages tend to see a dip in happiness as they transition into parenthood and the relationship becomes more strained, a review of literature on parenting finds that 'many initial challenges encountered at the time of new parenthood are transient in nature.' Marriages that were solid before the baby inserted itself into daily life usually remain solid, even with all the new stresses and sleepless nights. (It's marriages that were struggling before the transition to parenthood that are the ones most likely to see a significant dip.) 'The fact that more than three-fourths of adults already have or want to have children should itself be evidence that something very fundamental is at work,' writes James L. McQuivey, whose review of the research finds that more than a third of Americans wish they had more children than they currently have, and that 'an astonishing 88% agree that 'having children is one of the most important things I have done.'' Clearly, not everyone wants to or can become a parent. Reasons for not having kids are deeply personal and vary widely. While some may indeed want to sit leisurely on a beach, others, like Mother Teresa, prove that parents don't corner the market on selflessness. Many young adults feel ambivalent because their financial situations are too tenuous to buy a home or support a family, and still others wanted to parent, but infertility or life circumstances interfered. Catherine Rossi's poignant essay 'Not in the (Motherhood) Club,' describes her 20s full of work, a boyfriend and energy that somehow shifted in her 30s. 'With the seven-year guy long gone, I struggled to find another,' she writes, and then 'was hit full force in the face,' as her 30s became 40s, that 'there was a club.' Motherhood. And she would never be in it, feeling ostracized as everyone's lives began and continued to revolve around their children. No one should be stereotyped as selfish or feel ostracized for not having children, but a societal narrative that 'all parents are miserable' is not only untrue, but dissuades young adults from participating in what many find the most rewarding part of life. George Bailey. What a life. First the longed for dream of travel and Europe postponed, actually demolished, to salvage the family business and keep Bedford Falls from falling prey to Mr. Potter's evil machinations. Then marriage to Mary followed by multiple children — further imploding dreams of architecture, explorations and making it big. No wonder George questions, at a desperate juncture, whether his life is worth anything in Frank Capra's film classic 'It's a Wonderful Life,' as all his selflessness seems for naught. One of today's influencers might call George miserable, living in hell. It takes a hapless angel named Clarence to give George a vision of what his family and friends' lives would be like without his altruism (spoiler alert: pretty terrible). The movie ends with George surrounded by a grateful wife and thankful kids, relatives and a household full of friends. Mr. Potter, with money and power to make every wish come true, comes off as the truly miserable one compared to George's wonderful life. Maybe family-first, we-before-me selflessness offers its own angelic perspective during the desperate junctures of marriage and child-rearing, removing us from near-sighted annoyances and heartaches to give us the long view that sacrifices are worth it, and that hard times can bring out the best in us. Writer-surgeon Richard Selzer (1928-2016) was particularly adept at taking miserable medical situations and reframing them through the ennobling actions of a selfless spouse. In Selzer's essay 'Tube Feeding,' a husband tenderly ministers to a wife with an inoperable brain tumor, unable to eat. He devotedly carries out his daily duty when the feeding tube suddenly dislodges, so he nervously scrambles to reattach the tube, a nauseating process. Not wanting his wife to sense his distress, the husband discreetly hurries to a bathroom where she hears him throwing up. In another Selzer essay, he must cut a small nerve to remove the tumor in a woman's cheek — leaving the young wife with a twisted, clownish mouth. As Selzer encounters his patient and her husband back in her hospital room, he asks himself, 'Who are they? ... He and this wry mouth I have made, who gaze at each other so generously, greedily?' 'Will my mouth always be like this?' she asks, and Selzer replies yes, 'because the nerve was cut.' The wife remains silent, but the husband smiles and says, 'I like it ... it is kind of cute.' 'All at once I know who he is,' Selzer continues. 'I understand and I lower my gaze. One is not bold in an encounter with a god. Unmindful, he bends to kiss her crooked mouth and I am so close I can see how he twists his own lips to accommodate to hers, to show her that their kiss still works.' This article is the fourth of a series on the future of marriage in America.

Amazon Promising review: "I ran out of the Drunk Elephant bronzing drops, but I didn't want to spend another forty dollars, so I purchased this instead, and I am so glad I did. I like to mix it with my moisturizer or my tinted sunscreen to give me that bronzed, natural glow. This is exactly like the Drunk Elephant one and I will definitely be repurchasing." —Todd U. Get it from Amazon for $5.99. Promising review: "Better than Clinique! I bought this one on a whim but never liked the real Black Honey Almost Lipstick by Clinique, since it tends to run red on me. This shade, in my opinion, is exactly what Black Honey SHOULD be, as it looks more like Black Honey in pictures. For the price, it can't be beat, so I'm buying more." —HAC Get it from Amazon for $6.99 (also available in the pink honey version, and in a two-pack that mixes both)! Read more about nail care, including how nail strengtheners may help nails, at Mayo Clinic. Promising reviews: "My Dior nail glow ran out and I saw this brand had a [lookalike} for that. I liked this color even more... Excellent everyday, clean-looking polish. Seems stronger than Essie." —reviewer22 "Growing out my nails has always been a challenge for me; I'm guilty of biting and peeling/picking at my nails when I'm nervous. This product has completely changed my nail game. It gives my nails a hard protective coating, and the tint of pink makes even my stubby nails look professional and pretty." —Andi Get it from Amazon for $5.36. Promising reviews: "I looooove this so much. The smell is amazing, and it tends to stick around for a while, so I love getting whiffs of it throughout the day. My hair is softer and doesn't seem as frizzy as before. I put it on after washing my hair and then after it's dry. I tend to wash my hair two times a week, so I'll use it in between washes on my ends to make sure they still look nice and healthy. Great value, too; I've been using it pretty consistently since purchasing, and I've barely made a dent in it. Love it!" —Noley "Coming from someone with very coarse 4c hair.. this product is heaven-sent. Extremely satisfied. Sticking to this product and this product only from now on, lol." —Danielle Get it from Amazon for $18+ (available in two sizes, a mist style, and four other formulas). Amazon Check out a TikTok of the Magic Shaper Face Cream Palette in action. Promising review: "Best [alternative] for the Make Up For Ever HD Skin Face Essentials Longwear Full Face Cream palette that costs around $80. This one has less color options than the Make Up For Ever palette, but it's definitely the best [alternative], and for the price, it works amazingly. The blush and bronzer last hours on my skin — after setting spray, of course. I mix the two blushes on the back of my hand, and it's a good color for me. Also, I recommend warming the product on the back of your hand; that way, it's easier to blend and apply. Even without doing that, it is very easy to blend." —Lorraine Get it from Amazon for $8. The color-adaptive formula is designed so one of four shades will work on any skin tone. Promising review: "I used to use the Becca under-eye product, and this one is way better. You can sheer it out and warm it up on your hand. Don't need to use a lot, and it adds a lot of brightness under concealer." —Ariel O "Took years off my eyes! This product is so reasonably priced. I came across a TikTok promoting this and decided to take a chance since the price was super reasonable. My eyes looked brighter in a good way, and the concealer worked so well that I felt I looked younger. I got compliments from friends asking what I did differently with my makeup. I recommend it." —Monica T. Get it from Amazon for $6 (available in four shades). Promising review: "Since trying this product, I will never go back to anything else. For years, I've been using Better Than Sex by Too Faced, and I absolutely loved it. But as you know, it's at a higher price point. I was looking for a cheaper option that worked the same, if not better. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across this. For me... THIS WORKS BETTER! I've tried both the black and brown options as well as the waterproof options and [I'm] blown away by every one of them!! This is my new favorite mascara! Makes my lashes look like I had them professionally done." —chela1389 Get it from Amazon for $4.99 (available in black or brown and as a three-pack). Emma Lord / BuzzFeed Watch on TikTok as one user goes from skeptic to believer! BuzzFeed Shopping writer Emma Lord considers herself a fan: "I am not a new human to the tubing mascara game, and in fact, I readily spent $26 on the famous OG blend from Blinc every time it needed replacing. I didn't even love it for the length half as much as the fact that tubing mascara like this genuinely never smudges, but can I just say — regardless of price, the formula blows all the others I've tried out of the water. It gives me way more length and volume than other brands, slides on so much more easily, stays put ALL day, and never, ever smudges. My favorite part, though, is how gently and easily it comes off with soap and water. In the past, other mascara removals have felt rough on my lashes, but this comes off so fast that I'm like ??? was I even mascara a minute ago?? Anyway, I hesitate even writing this review because I want to gatekeep the hell out of this before it sells out, but the world needed to know. I'm a big fan of the brown shade (which is what I'm wearing above!), but it also comes in black and soft black." Get it from Amazon for $7 (available in three shades). Promising review: "I bought this and my daughter immediately tried to steal it because she thought it was the real thing. Ha! This is so easy to use and a little goes a long way. This will last for a while. And was a fraction of the price of the brand name." —Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $6.99 (available in three shades). Promising review: "This stuff is no joke. I like to use one product for my full face for a quick makeup routine, as eyeshadow, blush, and highlight all at once. When I tell you I need exactly two dots for my whole face, I couldn't be more serious! It has a different, more glossy texture than a Rare Beauty blush, but the pigment is much stronger. Comes off very dewy and kind of glossy but can be made matte with powder. The only thing I will say is that if you overwork it, there can be small lifted spots, which happened to me when I first tried it because I used too much and then had to try to blend so much. Already purchased another color. Love E.l.f. makeup!" —oscar Julian zapotitla Get it from Amazon for $6.65+ (available in 12 shades). Promising review: "These are fantastic. I bought all four, and I hope they add more colors. They are giving Patrick Ta, but better, at a fraction of the cost. They really last all day individually, but if you want you can layer them for even more color saturation. The textures are great, easy application. The two pinks are very pigmented and vibrant, so go easy at first. Highly recommend." —Joan A. Get it from Amazon for $7 (available in four shades). Jenae Sitzes / BuzzFeed, Promising review: "This sunscreen is a gem. I was not expecting to love it as much as I do. I absolutely love E.l.f. products, but I rarely try their skincare. Something told me to try this. When I put it on, it gave a smooth silicone finish and feel. I was faithful to Supergoop but didn't want to spend as much as the product is listed for. I will continue to use this sunscreen; it has been one of the best I've ever tried. I've been into skincare since I was 15; I am 37, and for me to say that this product is a gold mine is rare." —Angelina S Get it from Amazon for $5+ (available in two sizes). Promising reviews: "I have used Moroccanoil for years and decided to give this a shot. This is better than Moroccanoil and I will be buying again. It keeps my hair soft and smooth even in summer humidity. Great product." —Caitlin K. "This product is a legit alternative to the Ouai hair oil. They smell identical, they feel exactly the same, and they left my hair shiny and soft. And most importantly it saved me some money for the future." —Brianna Reed Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in packs of two and four). Promising reviews: "Better than Starface!!! These stick extremely well and actually pull out and absorb the gunk. Plus, they come with soooooo many." —chey "I love these and wish they had them around when I was a teenager! I literally use them as facial decorations in addition to hiding blemishes and, my teenage son has no problem wearing them because they effectively minimize zits!!" —Monica LivaClean is a small business specializing in acne solutions and skincare. Get a pack of 240 from Amazon for $9.99+ (available in four shapes/colors and in multipacks). Promising review: "This stuff is absolutely fantastic! Don't let the low price throw you off because this can do better, in my opinion, than 'the elephant stuff'! I had those itty bitty bumps right under my bottom lip on my chin and four days after using this stuff with micro-needling, they were gone! I have always taken good care of my skin and now that I am 43, I am just now realizing that I did a better job than I thought I had. I want to KEEP doing doing good stuff for my skin but not pay a fortune. This formula has a fresh orange-like smell to it and goes on very easily with a dropper. It dries within a minute and soaks in completely. I haven't had any irritation from the product but I had been using 'the elephant stuff' with similar ingredients prior to this, so it could be my skin was used to it. Overall, I am EXTREMELY pleased with this purchase." —AudibleAddicted And SeoulCeuticals is a small biz! Get it from Amazon for $19.98+ (available in two sizes). Promising review: "This is just like the Milk Makeup Cooling Water Stick — but I like it better. It's less than half the price, the packaging is cuter, the smaller applicator makes it easy to get under my eyes — and it smells like clean water and rose petals. It's hydrating, cooling, and non-greasy. It makes you instantly look and feel more awake. Love it." —Janelle Patricia Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (also available in a collagen formula). Promising review: "This stuff is amazing. It has light to medium coverage. It lasts all day. The oils in my skin usually breakdown foundation but this one stays in place and after a little blotting looks good as new... I just recently purchased the Fenty Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint in 6 and like it, but I actually prefer the Wet N Wild Tinted Hydrator better. You can buy six of these for the same price as the Fenty. I'm so happy I tried this." —Nancy Get it from Amazon for $5.47+ (available in eight shades and also in packs of two). It's formulated with hyaluronic acid and squalene for a boost of hydration! Promising reviews: "This stuff is so legit I've gone through three bottles. Adds the perfect glow to your skin! Sometimes, I use it under foundation, and sometimes, I use it solo with a bit of concealer. I will never not repurchase it for the price and how beautifully it sits on the skin. This stuff is viral for a reason!!" —mapagill "If you like Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter, this is leaps and bounds better! Just buy it. The coverage is better, [it] makes my skin have the most amazing natural glow! The colors run with a more warm/yellow undertone, which worked great for me! Spend a fraction of the price and just get it; you will be happy you did!" —Amazonreview Get it from Amazon for $11.20+ (available in 12 shades). Amazon Promising review: "Ok, so I absolutely LOVE this stuff! I tried it on a whim after hearing a few different people rave about it. I had tried a similar product from Rhode and was not really 'wowed' by it, but thought it was still a nice product. This milky toner, however, blew me away. I apply it after washing my face with my hands and gently pat it in, and it just leaves a moisturized, dewy finish. I also have recently started mixing it in with my foundation when I apply it to my makeup and it's been a game changer. Since it's winter and I live in the northeast, I have had issues with my foundation being really dry lately — this has solved it. It leaves a beautiful satin finish. For the price point, amount of product, and versatility, you just can't beat it. Will be repurchasing!" —talon12 Get it from Amazon for $14.99. Promising reviews: "I have the Dior lip oil, and I actually like this one better! It leaves my lips softer and leaves the perfect tint on my lips. Sometimes I combine with a lipstick for extra color." —Emily R. "I really like this and the applicator! It's so fun and cute. I like the texture and the feel of it on my lips. It feels thicker, and it doesn't come off too quickly. I got the color supermodel. It's not too pink like it looks and I wanted it to be natural, so it's perfect. Will be repurchasing." —Martha R. Get it from Amazon for $6.91+ (available in 14 shades). Promising review: "Okay so first nothing will make you 'poreless,' but this stuff is amazing. Will even out fine lines and help with super porous areas; my T-zone [has really visible] pores and this definitely gave me a boost in confidence. I would highly recommend. Especially to those not to familiar with makeup, this is a game changer. Honestly it works better than my $30 primer from Urban Decay and lasts all day. I am oily so I usually blot some powder on later in the day but if you have dry skin this could be the ultimate game changer!" —Olivia Get it from Amazon for $10. Promising review: "I have tried IGK, Living Proof, Not Your Mother's, Amika, and so many others but THIS LASTS THE LONGEST! I am impressed by this product. I apply it at night and wake up with soft, hydrated, plump lips. Bonus: if you apply hyaluronic acid on your lips beforehand — chef's kiss. As for the price, I wish it had way more product, but it is cheaper than the Laneige lip mask and way better, in my humble opinion." —María "This lip balm is a great alternative if you do not want to pay a ton of money for the Laneige and Summer Fridays lip balms. It is super moisturizing and left my lips super smooth and soft. One of the best e.l.f. products I have tried and it is a wonderful price. In my opinion, better than Laneige at a fraction of the price. A bit thicker, which I like. Even though it's a sleeping mask, I use it throughout the day to keep my lips moist and soft. Will keep ordering again and again." —Michaela "This is the most moisturizing lip treatment on the market. When my lips started getting dry due to the cold season, I was thinking of buying the Laneige lip mask, but it's soooo expensive. This is a fraction of the cost and feels just the same. Very good product." —Riya Get a set of three from Amazon for $9.90 (available in five scent combos). Amazon Promising reviews: "Love these better than my glow recipe! Better because it doesn't have the smell... Makes my skin feel amazing and so juicy! Great value for the money." —Tiffany T. "I've used Glow Recipe's Watermelon Dew Drops, and while I liked the product I wasn't too fond of the strong scent or the price point. The texture, finish, and feel of this product is pretty much identical, but without the fragrance and at a better value. Smooth, absorbs quickly, works well as a lightweight primer that doesnt pill with makeup, and subtly evens skin tone over time." —K.C. Get it from Amazon for $11.97. Promising reviews: "I was gifted the Hanacure masks and loved them, but they're just way too pricey. I heard SO many wonderful things about the Skin 1004 Zombie Mask... Let me tell you, this mask is just straight up magic. I didn't notice any changes to my skin immediately, but a few hours later when I looked in the mirror, I was shocked at how wonderful my skin looked. I've never noticed a difference like this. This is not only [an alternative] for Benefit's brow gel and Glossier Boy Brow, it's better! So much better and way cheaper." —Amazon Customer "OK, I was skeptical as I love my ABH Brow Freeze. But a friend did my makeup and used it and I was really impressed. So, I got some and played with it on my own. It is so much smoother to glide through my brows. I work it through back and front, then again with a clean spoolie. I LOVE the results. It also washes out really well (even if I don't use a makeup wipe)." —Miss Jordan Get it from Amazon for $9.90+ (available in five shades). Amazon, New to cleansing balms?
