Bayfront Park fountain renovation complete after nearly 20 years
Why it matters: The renovation of the downtown landmark comes amid a renewed push to restore the city's other historic sites, like Miami Marine Stadium.
Catch up quick: The Mildred and Claude Pepper Fountain first opened in 1990 but the city quickly reduced its hours due to cost concerns and, by 1999, had begun running it at half power, the Miami Herald reports.
The city later shut it down and, by 2007, the fountain became a takeoff zone for a private hot air balloon business.
The fountain, designed by acclaimed sculptor Isamu Noguchi, used to be a watery oasis on hot summer days but became an eyesore in recent years.
The latest: The Bayfront Park Management Trust, a city agency that operates the park, has spent nearly $5.5 million renovating the fountain, interim executive director Barbara Hernandez tells Axios.
After construction began in July, the fountain made its grand debut during the park's annual New Year's Eve celebration.
The original design has been preserved, but the fountain now features over 500 lights, 800 water jets and a central water screen that projects images and videos, per the Trust.
Yes, but: Hernandez says the fountain is "still in the testing stage" and that the Trust is "working on a schedule for show times."
It's still been running on most nights, she added.
What we're watching: Will the city be able to operate the fountain year-round or will cost concerns once again be an issue?
Hernandez says the trust is still calculating the cost of maintaining the fountain, which a city contractor has estimated at $20,000 to $30,000 a month.
What they're saying: Mayor Francis Suarez praised the fountain project earlier this month during his State of the City address.
"Seeing that fountain light up, other than the births of my children and my marriage, is one of the happiest moments of my life."

Sophie Turner 'was going through hell' amid Trust shoot
Sophie Turner found filming Trust to be "super cathartic". The 29-year-old actress was in the midst of her divorce from pop star Joe Jonas during the film's shoot, and Sophie actually enjoyed being able to throw herself into the project. Sophie - whose character suffers a betrayal in Trust - said on Late Night with Seth Meyers: "I'm not sure if anyone's aware, but when I started shooting this movie, I was going through, like, a media hell. "So this was super cathartic because I wanted to run away in my real life when that was all happening. But I got to do it in a movie and I got to smash some s*** up, so that was fun." Sophie previously described her separation from Joe as "incredibly sad". The actress was married to the pop star between 2019 and 2024, and she admitted that their break-up was very difficult. She told Harper's Bazaar magazine: "We had a beautiful relationship, and it was hard." Sophie returned home to the UK after her marriage ended, and the actress admitted that she's now loving life in England. She said: "I'm so happy to be back. It felt as if my life was on pause until I returned to England. "I just never really feel like myself when I'm not in London, with my friends and family. I was away for so long — six years — and it was when my friends were getting engaged, and when I got pregnant. I went for dinner with someone the other day, and she said, 'I never got to touch your belly.' We didn't have those key experiences with each other." Sophie has daughters Delphine, three, and Willa, five, with her ex-husband, and she admitted that motherhood changed her "so much in every way". She added: "Before I had kids, I was very depressed and anxious, and I would isolate [myself] a lot. Now, I think I live my life for them. I want them to see me having a social life and enjoying work and thriving in my career and relationships. I want them to see a hard-working mum."

'Game of Thrones 'siblings Sophie Turner and Kit Harington were 'retching' after shooting movie kiss scene: 'It was vile'
The pair are set to play lovers in the upcoming gothic horror, "The Dreadful." After years of starring as half-siblings for eight seasons of Game of Thrones, Sophie Turner and Kit Harington were both seriously grossed out playing lovers in their upcoming gothic horror film, The Dreadful. The actress, who played the Queen of the North Sansa Stark on the hit HBO fantasy series, explained on Thursday's episode of Late Night that both she and Harington, who starred as Jon Snow, felt sick to their stomaches after shooting their first kiss scene together for the film. 'We get on set and it's the first kissing scene and we are both retching,' Turner revealed. 'Like, really, it is vile. It was the worst. Another really bad moment in my career.' Written and directed by Natasha Kermani, The Dreadful follows outsider Anne (Turner) as her life is turned upside down after the arrival of a mysterious man from her past. Turner, who also serves as a producer on the film, explained earlier in the interview that she knew right away that Harington was the perfect person to play Anne's lover Jago — but hadn't exactly realized what their characters' romance would require of them. 'I just got this script for this amazing Gothic horror called The Dreadful and I was reading through all the characters and I'm producing it so the director was asking me, 'Who do you think?'' She recalled. 'And immediately the first person I thought of was Kit.' So, naturally, she sent the script Harington's way and received an interested, but slightly hesitant, response in return. 'He kind of sent me a message back going like, 'Yeah, I'd love to, but this is going to be really f---ing weird, Soph,'' Turner recalled. 'And I was like, 'What is he talking about?' And then I was reading it and I'm like, kiss, kiss, sex, kiss, sex, and then I'm like, 'Oh, shoot, that's my brother.'' In the end, the pair decided that it was 'such a good script' that they couldn't let the idea of having to play lovers throw them off. She added, 'He was like, 'We kind of have to do it.'' That didn't make the reality of having to actually kiss one another any easier, though. When asked by host Seth Meyers if kissing Harington was worse than being covered in real-life cockroaches for her new film Trust, Turner admitted, "Yeah. Yeah, it was. I have to be honest, it was bad.' Watch Turner discuss kissing Harington — and accidentally ending a couple's engagement at a party — in the clip above. File Photo by Mike Goulding/UPI | License Photo Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Sophie Turner is opening up about what it was like kissing her former Game of Thrones co-star Kit Harington in the upcoming gothic horror film The Dreadful, which Turner also produces. The actress, 29, and Harington, 38, played onscreen siblings Sansa Stark and Jon Snow on Game of Thrones and now portray lovers in The Dreadful. Turner discussed the film on Late Night with Seth Meyers Thursday. "I sent the script to Kit and he kind of sent me a message back going like, 'Yeah, I'd love to, but this is going to be really ... weird Soph,'" she told Meyers. "And I was like, 'What is he talking about?' And then I was reading it and I'm like kiss, kiss, sex, kiss, sex. And then I'm like, 'Oh, shoot, that's my brother.'" "But it's such a good script that he was like, 'We kind of have to do it.' So then we put it out our minds and then we get on set, and it's the first kissing scene, and we are both retching. Like, really, it is vile. It was the worst. Another really bad moment in my career," she added. Meyers asked Turner if the experience was worse than filming with live rats and cockroaches for her upcoming movie Trust. "Yeah," she responded. In The Dreadful, Turner portrays Anne, a woman living her mother-in-law amid the War of the Roses. Harrington plays a man from their past who complicates Anne's life, Deadline reports.
