Bayfront Park fountain renovation complete after nearly 20 years

Axios29-01-2025

After a two-decade dry spell, the Bayfront Park fountain is back from the dead.
Why it matters: The renovation of the downtown landmark comes amid a renewed push to restore the city's other historic sites, like Miami Marine Stadium.
Catch up quick: The Mildred and Claude Pepper Fountain first opened in 1990 but the city quickly reduced its hours due to cost concerns and, by 1999, had begun running it at half power, the Miami Herald reports.
The city later shut it down and, by 2007, the fountain became a takeoff zone for a private hot air balloon business.
The fountain, designed by acclaimed sculptor Isamu Noguchi, used to be a watery oasis on hot summer days but became an eyesore in recent years.
The latest: The Bayfront Park Management Trust, a city agency that operates the park, has spent nearly $5.5 million renovating the fountain, interim executive director Barbara Hernandez tells Axios.
After construction began in July, the fountain made its grand debut during the park's annual New Year's Eve celebration.
The original design has been preserved, but the fountain now features over 500 lights, 800 water jets and a central water screen that projects images and videos, per the Trust.
Yes, but: Hernandez says the fountain is "still in the testing stage" and that the Trust is "working on a schedule for show times."
It's still been running on most nights, she added.
What we're watching: Will the city be able to operate the fountain year-round or will cost concerns once again be an issue?
Hernandez says the trust is still calculating the cost of maintaining the fountain, which a city contractor has estimated at $20,000 to $30,000 a month.
What they're saying: Mayor Francis Suarez praised the fountain project earlier this month during his State of the City address.
"Seeing that fountain light up, other than the births of my children and my marriage, is one of the happiest moments of my life."

A Fan Wanted a Photo With One of His Favorite Rappers, Who Instead Takes Him Hostage

In news that can only be described as 'what the helly?' a recent meet & greet with a Florida rapper was met with an unfortunate ending. But the story of how things even got there is almost too wild to be true. Let us explain. Earlier this week, a fan ran into local rapper Chocolate MC outside of grocery store in Miami. Excited at the chance happening, the male waved him down and asked if they could take a photo together to commemorate the occasion. What happened next was something straight out of a horror movie. According to NBC6 Miami, instead of taking a photo, the rapper instead took the fan hostage, pointing a gun to his chest and ordering him to get back inside his car. With the man in the driver's seat, Chocolate (legally Yosvanis Sierra-Hernandez) began demanding for the man to give him any cash he had on him. Once he realized the man didn't have any, Sierra-Hernandez tried to take his money via the popular money transfer app Zelle. That also proved unsuccessful as the man didn't have it installed. As a result, the rapper forced the man to drive him around to different locations over the course of two hours before he was eventually let go without harm or injury. Sierra-Hernandez was eventually arrested on Wednesday after the victim went to local authorities to file a police report. The rapper is now facing charges of kidnapping with a firearm, armed robbery, and written threats to kill or injure. His latest arrest couldn't come at a more worse time as he was already scheduled to appear in court in connection to a prior, separate incident involving burglary and murder. Given his absence in court for that case (as he had been arrested for the kidnapping crime), he was subsequently denied bond for the burglary charges. In a post to social media last week, Sierra-Hernandez's mother spoke out concerning her son's crimes, tearfully explaining how much her son needs help and that she was concerned for his well-being.

Miami contestant booted from ‘Love Island' amid online backlash. What we know

Yulissa Escobar did not get off to an auspicious start on Peacock dating show 'Love Island USA.' The bubbly Miami contestant was ousted during the second episode Wednesday night. What happened? Redditors unearthed old videos of Escobar dropping the n-word repeatedly on an old podcast discussing a past partner. Once those clips went viral, the 27-year-old's fate was apparently sealed. Viewers, who can vote on their fave pairings from the comfort of home, were introduced to Escobar last week. But this week, she vanished from Fiji (and TV screens) with narrator Iain Stirling announcing her departure midway through the show. 'Yulissa has left the villa,' Stirling said of the businesswoman who runs Aesthetic Events, a local mobile bar company. Peacock offered no explanation, nor did Escobar when the Miami Herald reached out to her for comment. But one of her recent Instagram posts, announcing she was joining the show, was telling, with critics flooding the comments. 'Can't wait to send you home.' 'Oh girl you'll be the first to go.' 'Don't get too comfortable.' In another promo clip, Escobar describes why she's a great catch. 'I'm here to find my knight in shining armor, I want that movie kind of love,' says the four foot 10 entrepreneur. 'I'm super fun ... like this bundle of joy that just came out of nowhere.'

Bride Struggles to 'Survive' Wedding After Groom's 'Hurtful' Secret Is Revealed

In a submission to Slate's advice column "Dear Prudence," a recent bride asked for help on how to get over her husband's wedding lie, which was revealed during the best man's toast at their reception The bride feels "extremely hurt" that the groom used ChatGPT to write his wedding vows instead of doing so by himself like he promised her In response, Slate's editor-in-chief told the bride she was "overthinking" the issue and advised her to accept her husband's apology because "his heart was in the right place"A recent bride is afraid she might never get over her husband's wedding lie. In an anonymous submission to Slate's advice column "Dear Prudence," a bride detailed how the groom's major secret was revealed at their wedding reception, and now she doesn't know if she can ever trust him again. "My husband is still apologizing, and while part of me wants to move on, another part of me can't stop thinking about his dishonesty," the bride wrote. "I've asked him whether he ever planned on telling me or if he would have taken that secret to the grave, and all he can tell me is that he 'doesn't know.' " "I worry about what other things he might keep from me in the future," she added. After getting engaged, the couple of five years spent two years of "extensive wedding planning and preparation." At the time, they both "agreed" they'd write their own vows because it would be "more meaningful than using traditional ones." "As a self-admitted perfectionist and English major, I spent an immense amount of time thinking about and writing mine, and while I wouldn't hold my husband to impossible standards, I was really looking forward to hearing what he wrote," the bride explained. When the wedding ceremony came, the groom's "beautiful" vows emotionally moved the bride — so much so that it made her "tear up." But at the reception her tears of joy would turn into tears of sorrow. The "slightly drunk" best man accidentally let it slip in his wedding toast that the groom used ChatGPT to write his vows "at the last minute." "My husband was laughing nervously, and I was taken aback," the bride said. "As soon as the toasts were over, I ran to the restroom and cried, feeling extremely hurt that not only did he use AI to write something so intimate, but mostly that he presumably would not have told me had this not been revealed during the toast." The groom followed his wife to the bathroom and apologized, explaining that he felt "too overwhelmed" to write the vows himself and didn't want to "disappoint" her. "I told him that I didn't want an apology from him but just wanted to survive the rest of the reception, which we did, although the entire time I was distracted and hurt by this situation," the bride said. Later that night, the couple continued to "fight" about the vows. The advice-seeker said she was more upset about her husband's "hurtful" dishonesty than the fact that he used AI-generated vows. "I told him that I wish he had just been honest with me and that his lying was far more hurtful to me than not writing his own vows," she said, noting that she was also upset with his friends for being "comfortable lying on his behalf." The woman's husband is "still apologizing" to her, and while she wants to "move on" she just doesn't "know how." "Am I overthinking this?" she asked. "I feel like I have every right to be upset, and I worry about what other things he might keep from me." is now available in the Apple App Store! In response to the submission, Slate's editor-in-chief, Hillary Frey, told the bride that she was "WAY overthinking this." She reminded the advice-seeker that "weddings are totally overwhelming," and that her husband is "not an English major or perfectionist" like her and probably just "needed some help writing something that articulated his feelings better than he felt he could." "Based on his best man's actions, I wouldn't have gone to him for help, either!" Frey wrote. "So, there is our fraught companion, ChatGPT, offering its services. His heart was in the right place. Even more, he apologized; a lesser man would have been defensive and somehow made this your fault, I promise." She advised the bride to let go of this "unsavory memory" because married life will eventually "throw much tougher moments" her way. "I am glad that it sounds like you have a thoughtful partner who holds you in such high regard that he enlisted help, even if it was from a robot. These are the times we live in!" Frey said. "So accept his apology, delete the photos of the best man giving his toast, and pick the one picture from your wedding you like the best and make it your home screen. The more you see you and your partner looking happy on your wedding day, the more the stupid best man speech will recede from memory." Read the original article on People
