Ukraine-Russia war latest: Kyiv says it has advanced in Sumy region and claims Moscow has lost 1 million troops
Fighting has intensified despite a return to direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv in recent months. Russian forces have carved out a 200 square kilometre (77.22 square miles) chunk of Ukraine's Sumy region and first entered the Dnipropetrovsk region last month.
'Our troops maintain defenses along the designated border, conduct preparation and counter-offensive measures to repel the enemy,' the Ukrainian military's General Staff said on Facebook.
'Yes, as a result of the successful actions of Ukrainian soldiers, the settlement of Andriyivka was liberated. In addition, our units advanced in the area of Oleksíivka, pushing the opponent away from Sumy.'
The General Staff also claimed on Monday that Russia has lost more than one million troops during its invasion of Ukraine after losing more than 1,000 in the past day alone.
The figures from Kyiv have not been verified by independent sources - but the Center for Strategic & International Studies reported earlier this month that up to 250,000 soldiers have been killed with up to 950,000 casualties.

Aug 4 (Reuters) - A Russian drone attack on Monday killed two people on a moped in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region near the border, regional police said. A police report on the Telegram messaging app said a man and a woman were killed near Vovchansk, an area that was visited during the day by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Russian forces staged a brief incursion into the region near Vovchansk in May 2024, but Ukrainian troops later recaptured most of the area. Separately, Ukraine's Interior Ministry said that the number of dead had risen to seven in a Russian strike last Thursday on an apartment building in the city of Kramatorsk in eastern Donetsk region.

Netherlands uses new NATO channel to pay for US arms for Ukraine
AMSTERDAM/BRUSSELS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - The Netherlands said on Monday it will contribute 500 million euros ($578 million) to purchase U.S. military equipment for Ukraine, becoming the first NATO country to contribute to a new mechanism to supply Kyiv with American weapons. President Donald Trump said last month the U.S. would provide weapons to Ukraine, paid for by European allies, but he did not provide details on how this would work. "As the first NATO ally, the Netherlands will deliver a €500 million package of US weapon systems (including Patriot parts and missiles)," Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said in a post on X. NATO chief Mark Rutte, a former Dutch prime minister, welcomed the announcement and said he has encouraged other alliance members to participate in the new mechanism, called the NATO Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative. 'This is about getting Ukraine the equipment it urgently needs now to defend itself against Russian aggression,' Rutte said in a statement. 'I have written to all NATO Allies, urging them to contribute towards this burden sharing initiative, and I expect further significant announcements from other Allies soon,' he added. The U.S. ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, told Reuters on Monday that he expected many more countries to announce over the coming weeks that they will participate. 'We're moving as fast as possible,' Whitaker said in an interview at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Asked about a timeline for getting U.S. deliveries to Ukraine under the new mechanism, he said, 'I think we'll see it moving very quickly, certainly in the coming weeks, but some even sooner than that. 'The Dutch are just the first of many. You're going to see a series of announcements in the coming weeks,' he added. NATO said it would coordinate the new initiative, which is funded by European members of the alliance and Canada and will be divided into packages worth approximately $500 million. In a statement, the alliance said, "Working closely with Ukraine and the United States, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Grynkewich will validate packages that correspond to Ukraine's needs, such as air defence, ammunition and other critical equipment for rapid delivery from U.S. stockpiles". Kyiv welcomed the Dutch decision. "Ukraine, and thus the whole of Europe, will be better protected from Russian terror," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on X. Warwickshire MP drives 1,300 miles to deliver aid to Ukraine
An MP has driven an ambulance full of humanitarian aid 1,300 miles to Taylor, MP for North Warwickshire and Bedworth, completed the three-day trip from her constituency to the Poland-Ukraine border on 31 journey formed part of a long-running charitable initiative formed by LKQ UK & Ireland, a company that distributes automotive Taylor said she had been "honoured" to have been asked by the company to drive the ambulance, adding it was an "extraordinary experience". A convoy of ambulances started their journey at LKQ's headquarters in Birch Coppice Business Park in Tamworth, included overnight stops in Germany and Poland before reaching the Taylor's ambulance was the 50th to be driven in the initiative. Dawid Kozlowski, a demand supply planner at LKQ UK & Ireland, has co-ordinated the delivery of more than 200 tonnes of aid since the war broke out in 2022, including 34 ambulances and more than £6,000 worth of prescription medicine."We have always focused on the most practical and immediate needs – medical supplies, vehicles, and support for children," he Kozlowski, who has also overseen more than a thousand Christmas gifts to Ukrainian children, was honoured with a Volunteer Award in BBC CWR's Make A Difference Awards in 2023."The suffering of those in Ukraine continues to be a big issue at the heart of my community, and the support we've had from the company to help those in need has made an incredible difference," he said.
