Liam Payne 'internal battle' with Cheryl Cole over decisions regarding their son Bear
The One Direction star, who died age 31 from falling from the third floor of a hotel in October last year, left behind millions for his son Bear, with his ex-girlfriend Cheryl being granted the authority to manage his estate
Liam Payne and ex-girlfriend Cheryl co-parented their beloved son Bear after the couple went their separate ways in 2018. The One Direction star died without writing a will after he fell from the third floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last October.
Cheryl, who described his death as an "earth shattering event," has now been granted the power of administration of the late singers estate. Liam left behind £24.3million, much of which is set to be going to his eight-year-old son, Bear.
Court documents filed on May 1 reveal that music lawyer Richard Bray has also been appointed as an administrator, the Mirror reports.
Liam was only 23-years-old when he became a father to Bear in 2017, with the couple separating just a year later.
In an interview the star revealed he had an 'internal battle' when it came to naming his only son - and Cheryl decided on Bear despite Liam not being the biggest fan.
In May 2017, Liam expressed to Total Access: "It was like an internal battle. I wanted a more traditional name, and she wanted a name that was more unusual. And the reason she chose Bear in the end was because Bear is a name that, when you leave a room, you won't forget. And I like that. When I look at him, he's just Bear."
Liam continued: "At first, I wasn't really having it. I was like, 'I'm not really sure. I don't really understand.' Now, I look at him and he's Bear. You become your name as you get older anyway."
A few months later, Liam revealed how one of the midwives had called him 'Bear' in the delivery room, and the name stuck.
On March 25, 2017, Cheryl shared the news of the birth of her son on Instagram, posting a picture of the One Direction star holding his son.
She stated: "On Wednesday 22nd March Liam and I became parents to an incredibly beautiful, healthy baby boy, weighing 7lb 9 and looking like a dream. Although he still doesn't have a name, he is already stealing hearts."
She continued: "We are all madly in love and overwhelmingly happy with our little arrival. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers around the world. A day that now has a different meaning to me forever."
Before settling on the name Bear, the former couple shared their struggle over whether to choose a traditional or modern name for their son.
He told James Corden: "He had this thing where if they don't have a good cry, they get fluid in their lungs, which is quite serious, so he was like going 'grrrr'. I had like 10 doctors come in the room, and in the end, the guy was just like, 'Dude, I'm not being funny. There's nothing wrong with him. He just likes to make a lot of noise.' And that's carried on ever since, so he just became Bear."
Despite being in the public eye, both Cheryl and Liam chose not to share any pictures of Bear's face online. Although Liam revealed in 2020 that his then three-year-old son looked just like him.
He said: "He looks exactly like me, which is very strange. When family members see baby pictures of me now, they say, 'Oh wow, Bear looks really great there!'"
In 2018, a year after Bear's birth, the couple announced their split after two and a half years together but pledged to stay close for the sake of raising their son.
There statement read: "We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It's been a tough decision for us to make. We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together."
Back in 2022, Liam shared how he spent a lot of quality time with his son, saying: "I see him two times a week, three times a week sometimes."
"And I make sure when I see him, he has 100 percent of my time. I make sure that I'm not on my phone or d***ing around somewhere else. So, I like to give him those moments and it's important, he needs that in his life, he needs his dad in his life, and I'm happy he looks at me like a superhero, and I'm hoping to keep it that way."
Following Liam's death Cheryl paid tribute to her son's father, describing his death as an "earth-shattering event."
At the time she said: "As I try to navigate this earth-shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I'd like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being."
"Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our seven-year-old son. A son who now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again."
The Girls Aloud singer continued, writing: "What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days. It is breaking my heart further that I cannot protect him from that in his future.
"I am begging you to consider what use some of these reports are serving, other than to cause further harm to everyone left behind picking up the pieces."
"Before you leave comments or make videos, ask yourself if you would like your own child or family to read them. Please give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last. Thank you, Cheryl."

I've dubbed Lilibet the ‘jigsaw girl', Meghan Markle's bizarre birthday photos shows exactly why, says expert
PRINCESS Lilibet has been hailed as a 'jigsaw girl' following her fourth birthday photo. On Wednesday, the daughter of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated her birthday - with the duchess sharing two photos of the young tot. 7 Meghan Markle shared this photo of Princess Lilibet for her fourth birthday this week Credit: Instagram/Meghan 7 The Duke and Duchess of Sussex like to protect the privacy of Lilibet and Archie by concealing their faces Credit: Instagram 7 One of the only photos we've seen of Lilibet's face was her first birthday picture Credit: PA 7 On The Sun's Royal Exclusive show Charles Raw and Sarah Hewson spoke to host Bronte Coy, with Charles calling Lilibet a 'jigsaw girl' Credit: Supplied One showed Princess Lilibet as a newborn, while the second was a picture of Lilibet in the present day. However, both snaps showed a partial view of Princess Lilibet's face for privacy. Speaking on The Sun's Royal Exclusive show, former Sun Royal Correspondent and author Charles Rae discussed the intimate post, with host Bronte Coy saying it showed 'almost Lilibet's whole face.' He said: 'I like your definition of almost the full face. 'I'm dubbing Lilibet the jigsaw girl because over the four years, all we've seen is an ankle, an arm, a bit of a nose, maybe a forehead.' He added: 'I'm all for them protecting their children. 'I've got no problems with that as well. 'But, you know, this sort of half bits of the child, it doesn't do anything for me.' Royal Correspondent Sarah Hewson pointed out that the last time we had a proper portrait of Lilibet was three years ago to mark her first birthday. She shared: 'Apart from that, we haven't really seen her face. We see the backs of them. Meghan shares rare video of Lilibet BEEKEEPING with pair in matching outfits 'We do know so little about Lilibet because they moved to California. 'They are very protective over their children's privacy and they have every right to do so. I'm dubbing Lilibet the jigsaw girl because over the four years, all we've seen is an ankle, an arm, a bit of a nose, maybe a forehead Charles Rae 'We know that their safety is a huge issue.' We last got a glimpse of Princess Lilibet in a little beekeeper suit, which was shared by mum Meghan on Instagram - but it was taken from behind. 7 Meghan recently shared this photo of Princess Lilibet in a beekeeping suit Credit: Instagram/meghan GUARDED FAMILY Bronte continued: 'They're releasing bits of the kids, but in a very guarded way still. 'But both Harry and Meghan have been accused in the past of hypocrisy in this area. 'As a parent, of course, I do understand it is completely a prerogative what you share of your children online. 'They have said things in the past about their privacy. 'And then now Meghan having launched her Instagram in January, she has been releasing more and more of the kids, which is her decision.' 7 Meghan shared this photo of Archie from behind for his birthday Credit: Instagram Sarah claimed it is 'fair play' what the Duke and Duchess of Sussex share on Instagram now that they are no longer senior working royals. The couple famously stepped down in 2020 and now live in the star-studded Montecito California, in a £12million mansion with Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four. Sarah added: 'With Harry and Meghan, of course, we'd all love to see more because we're really interested in those little children. 'But I think it's entirely fair that they say, 'you know what, it's on our terms'. 'And that's what this is, very much on their terms, Meghan on her own platform, the images they choose to curate.' KATE AND WILLS' VIEWS 7 The Prince and Princess of Wales recognise George, Charlotte and Louis 'play a public role', according to experts Credit: Getty She pointed out that Prince William and Princess Kate may have a different approach with their own kids, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven. The royal expert explained: 'I think with the Waleses, they recognise that their children are going to play a part in public life. 'And they are being funded by the public as well. 'And they are going to take on significant roles in the future of the country and the monarchy. 'And therefore they recognise that they need to share. 'But they're also quite careful about when they share those moments of their children's lives. 'And there are pretty stringent restrictions on what can be shown and what can't.' Charles agreed, saying: 'You know, their children are eventually going to be on the royal treadmill. 'But they are very cautious with the times that the children have access to the public, or the public have access to them.'

Dawn French apologises after being accused of underplaying October 7 attacks
British comedian and actress Dawn French has issued a public apology after a social media video she posted about the conflict in Gaza and Israel drew widespread criticism. The 67-year-old Vicar of Dibley star shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), using a baby-like voice to deliver a satirical monologue critiquing what she described as the justifications used by those supporting Israel's continued military campaign in Gaza. 'Complicated, no, but nuanced. But [the] bottom line is no,' she says in the video, before launching into a series of exaggerated, childlike impressions mimicking pro-Israel arguments. 'Yeah, but you know they did a bad thing to us… and we want that land… and we have history… Those people aren't really even people, are they?' Each segment is followed by French returning to her natural voice to declare: 'No.' The video, which has since been deleted, quickly amassed over 4.7million views and sparked a fierce backlash among some. Critics accused French of trivialising the October 7 Hamas attacks, in which over 1,200 Israelis were killed and hundreds taken hostage. Some viewers said her tone appeared to mock victims rather than leaders. In response to the outcry, French posted a lengthy apology on Instagram on Saturday, acknowledging that her attempt at satire had fallen short of the mark. 'I clumsily used a mocking tone,' she wrote. 'My intention was NEVER to mock, or dismiss, or diminish the horror of what happened on 7 October 2023 and what continues to unfold from that brutal, unthinkable, unforgivable savage [attack].' French said her real aim had been to 'mock and point the finger of shame at the behaviour of the cruel leaders on ALL sides of this attricious [sic] war,' but admitted that her message had come across as one-sided. 'I'm particularly sorry that my disgust at Hamas didn't figure. It appeared one-sided and that is wrong,' she said. She added that she had been motivated by a growing sense of helplessness and a desire to speak out against the escalating humanitarian crisis, particularly the suffering of children in Gaza. More Trending 'The images of starving and wounded children have haunted me day and night,' she wrote. 'History has taught us never to stand by and allow this kind of inhumane violence to be wrought on anyone, especially innocent children.' 'I hope you will understand my intention was not to offend, but clearly I have. For which I am sorry and I have removed the video.' French's apology has prompted mixed responses online, with some praising her for addressing the issue directly and others continuing to criticise the original post.
