LaLiga leads AI evolution with global outreach

Reuters02-04-2025

April 2 Reuters News - Artificial intelligence isn't coming for football — in Spain, it's already laced up and part of the squad.
"LaLiga has become an integral part of AI's DNA," might sound poetic, but according to Javier Gil — LaLiga's head of AI implementation and development — it's the other way around.
"AI has become an integral part of LaLiga's DNA," Gil told Reuters by email, calling it a cornerstone of the league's strategy for years.
"We deployed solutions based on predictive analysis and algorithms long ago," he said, crediting LaLiga president Javier Tebas as a "bold leader" who spotted the potential of generative AI early and established a dedicated department to embed it across the organisation.
This isn't tech for tech's sake, Gil insisted. "It's about the significant value they bring to both LaLiga and the league," he said.
And that value, he argued, goes far beyond tactics and transfer talk.
"Generative AI has proven its ability to change not only the way we work, but also society itself," Gil said. "We have a great opportunity to connect with our fans in new ways and to reshape the entertainment industry."
FROM PITCH TO PIXELS
AI's influence in LaLiga now stretches from match analysis to media production. According to Gil, each match generates more than 3.5 million data points via a tracking camera system installed in every stadium.
That data feeds club-level prep and fuels projects like "Beyond Stats" — an initiative with Microsoft that blends advanced analytics into live broadcasts.
AI also automates real-time video content for digital platforms. "This is perhaps one of the reasons why LaLiga clubs are so competitive in European competitions," Gil said.
And while the tech is evolving fast, even Gil can't predict what's next.
"I don't know what the situation will look like in two years or even two months," he said. "Technological development will not stop... and we believe it is our responsibility to provide ongoing training for our employees to raise awareness of AI and encourage creativity among our teams."
GLOBAL GAME, DIGITAL STAGE
LaLiga's AI ambitions go well beyond Spain. The league is working with other federations and has set up a consultancy in Iraq, while its Dubai office — opened a decade ago — underscores its long-term interest in the Middle East and North Africa.
Gil said the league remains "open to sharing knowledge and expertise with any league, institution, or federation" keen to build a shared understanding of tech's potential.
Clubs like Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Deportivo Alaves are also rolling out AI-driven experiences to engage fans, while LaLiga continues to team up with partners such as Microsoft and Sportian to push the frontier.
And the U.S. is very much in their sights. Gil called it "a benchmark for innovation, responsibility, and inspiration" — a country from which LaLiga is keen to learn.
Whether it's article writing, branding, campaign work or interactive experiences, the possibilities are multiplying.
"We believe that sharing knowledge with other sports organisations in open discussions is not just a luxury," Gil said. "It's the only true way to continue learning and developing together."

Russian billionaire and Putin critic launches AI data centres in the UK

A Russian billionaire and critic of Vladimir Putin is preparing to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in artificial intelligence (AI) data centres in the UK. Nebius, a technology company headquartered in the Netherlands, will invest £200m to establish an 'AI factory' in Britain, deploying 4,000 graphics-processing chips designed to power the latest generation of machine-learning technology. The $12bn (£9bn) business is assessing potential data centre sites in the South East. Nebius was formed as part of a carve-up of Yandex, a company known as 'Russia's Google'. Arkady Volozh, a Russian entrepreneur worth a reported $2bn, founded Yandex in 1997 as a Russian rival to the US search engine. The business later listed in New York and in 2021 was valued at more than $30bn. However, its shares were suspended in 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Mr Volozh was sanctioned by the European Union. Over the years Yandex faced growing pressure from the Kremlin to censor online news and search results, and the company was accused by Brussels of helping to spread Kremlin propaganda. In 2023, Mr Volozh labelled Vladimir Putin's invasion 'barbaric' and said he was 'horrified' by the war. He said: 'I am categorically against it. Although I moved to Israel in 2014, I have to take my share of responsibility for the country's actions. 'There were reasons to stay silent during this long process. While there will anyway be questions about the timing of my statement today, there should be no questions about its essence. I am against the war.' The European Union removed its sanctions of Mr Volozh last year. Nebius was formed as part of a carve-up of Yandex, which spun off its Russian search division in a $5bn deal to Russian investors. Nebius, which is listed in the US, is made up of the remaining European, US and Israeli assets, including several data centres powered by Nvidia microchips and its self-driving car technology. Mr Volozh, Nebius's chief executive, said: 'The UK is where AI is being built, tested, and deployed at scale across industries from fintech to life sciences. Being here puts us closer to the start-ups, researchers, and enterprise leaders shaping what's next.' Nebius's UK investment comes after Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, announced plans to spend more than £1bn to boost the UK's computing power in a speech at London Tech Week alongside Jensen Huang, the Nvidia chief executive. On Monday, the Government announced a series of AI investments ahead of this week's Treasury spending review. These included £1bn for an AI research resource, made up of powerful AI data centres and supercomputers, as well as £187m to boost the technological skills of the UK workforce. On Tuesday, Peter Kyle, the Technology Secretary, also announced plans for a new Turing AI fellowship in a speech at London Tech Week. Backed by £25m, the programme will seek five AI experts who will be offered a substantial package to relocate to the UK and hire a team to conduct AI research. Mr Kyle said: 'We will harness the vast potential of our trillion-pound tech sector to help remake our country for the better.'

Casemiro claims season has been 'successful' despite Man Utd misery

Even though Manchester United achieved their lowest finish in Premier League history, midfielder Casemiro stated that the 2024/25 season has been one of the "most successful" of his career to date Casemiro has surprisingly deemed this season one of his "most successful" after earning the trust of Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, despite a challenging period for the team. The Brazilian midfielder appeared to be on his way out of Old Trafford in January, after talks of a move to Saudi Arabia were bandied about last summer and re-emerged during the winter window. Yet when the dust settled, Casemiro remained with United. After initially falling out of Portuguese coach Amorim's favour, by around February he began to carve out more regular playing time in the Premier League and European competitions. ‌ The 33-year-old became integral to the squad that battled its way to the Europa League final, noticing an uptick in appearances as the season drew to a close. ‌ Casemiro, while on duty with the Brazil national team, has now shed light on discussions held with Amorim earlier in his tenure, boldly stating that, for him, personally, it was indeed a successful year. "This year has been one of the most important years of my career, if not the most. Even because of the coach's choice [Ruben Amorim]. I was left out [of the options], but I never stopped working," Casemiro revealed. "That's my great success. Everyone wants to talk about titles, victories and big games, but when you don't play and you manage to change the mind of a coach who arrives and doesn't play you. "You end up coming back, and now you're being praised by the coach who at first practically didn't count on you... it was one of my most successful years. "These are things that end up happening internally. I'm one of those people who, when things happen internally, I don't like to say too much." ‌ Despite United's struggles, Casemiro donned the Red Devils' kit 42 times this term, netting five times and contributing three assists. His personal comeback stands in stark contrast to United's disappointing campaign, which saw them lumber to their lowest Premier League ranking in history, finishing 15th, and suffering 14 defeats, a figure not seen since 1990. The Brazilian midfielder faced severe criticism in September following a harrowing first-half display against Liverpool, where his error led to Luis Diaz opening the scoring after just 35 minutes. Not long after, Casemiro lost possession again, allowing Diaz to score once more before Erik ten Hag subbed him off at the break, with United eventual 3-0 losers. ‌ Casemiro shed light on his discussions with his manager during challenging times, stating (via the Manchester Evening News): "I don't think there's been such a big relapse in my individual aspect, but when the club isn't playing well, changes are needed. "I spoke to him [Amorim] and he told me that it was more a question of choosing to play, that I should wait for the opportunity. Of course, he was open with me. "He said it was his choice, nothing against me. I had no choice but to carry on working and wait for the opportunity. When I played, I lived up to what he asked."
