Taiwan shuts down last nuclear reactor

Qatar Tribune18-05-2025
TaipeicTypeface:> Taiwan on Saturday began to shut down its last active nuclear reactor, officially marking its departure from atomic power.
The No. 2 reactor at the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant in southern Taiwan, with a capacity of 951 megawatts, was set to be completely shut down by midnight local time, after its 40-year operating license expired, according to the state-owned energy supplier, Taiwan Power Company (Taipower). This move fulfils a key promise of the government's 2016 energy plan. The decision was largely influenced by the 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan.
'This sends a strong message not only to other Asian nations like Japan and Korea but also to the rest of the world that nuclear power is unnecessary,' Jusen Asuka, a professor at Japan's Tohoku University, told DPA. The decommissioning of Taiwan's older nuclear power plants began in 2018 and 2021, followed by the shutdown of Maanshan's first reactor in July 2024. At its peak in the mid-1980s nuclear power provided more than 50% of electricity, but in 2024 its share dropped to about 3%. (DPA)

Uganda agrees to take in African migrants deported from US

Kampala/Nairobi: Uganda will take in migrants deported from the US under certain conditions according to a new agreement reached with the US. Details of the deal's implementation are still being worked out by both countries, the country's Foreign Ministry announced on the X platform on Thursday. How many people will be affected and when the deportations will begin remains unclear for now. It is a temporary arrangement, the Foreign Ministry said, adding that people with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted. 'Uganda also prefers that individuals from African countries shall be the ones transferred,' the statement said. The agreement applies to third-country nationals who may not be granted asylum in the US and who have concerns about returning to their country of origin. The US is also targeting African countries in its controversial deportation policy. At the beginning of August, Rwanda agreed to take in up to 250 migrants deported from the US, according to a government spokeswoman. (DPA)

German top diplomat urges China to up pressure on Putin

dpa Jakarta German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on China to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. China must finally realize 'that it must play an active role in ending this conflict,' Wadephul said following a meeting with the secretary general of the ASEAN group of 10 South-East Asian countries in Jakarta on Thursday. 'Regrettably, China has not done this so far, although it has been asked to do so on several occasions,' Germany's top diplomat added. Wadephul called on Beijing to 'take on an active role, to end this conflict and put political pressure in particular, but also economic pressure on Russia to come to the negotiating table.' 'So far, we have tended to see Russia taking evasive action when I look at the latest statements by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov,' Wadephul said. 'But if China changes this strategy - and as we know, it's never too late for that - then I can also imagine a constructive role for China in the future.' Germany looking to recruit health workers The German minister was speaking during his first extended trip to Asia since taking office in May. Earlier on Thursday, the conservative politician visited the College of Health Professions in Jakarta together with Health Minister Budi Gundai Sadikin. In light of the shortage of nursing staff, Germany is interested in recruiting health workers from Indonesia. The German government sees great potential to recruit skilled workers from Indonesia, especially since half of the population is under 30 years old. At the college, which offers a programme that combines nursing training with German language classes, Wadephul engaged in discussions with trainees to get an idea of how they envision their future career plans in Germany. So far, skilled worker migration in this area remains at a low level, with around 1,000 visas per year. Wadephul also planned to visit a production facility of Germany's Daimler Truck AG in Cikarang, east of Jakarta, where chassis for trucks and buses are manufactured. At the site, which employs around 200 people and covers over 130,000 square metres, nearly 200 of these chassis are assembled monthly. The minister was also to visit the Istiqlal Mosque, guided by Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar, and the Cathedral of Jakarta, guided by Archbishop Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo where he hoped to gain an understanding of the coexistence of religions in the city.
