Will Joe Root Break Tendulkar's Record? Jos Buttler Says: 'He Won't Wake Up In...'

News186 days ago
Jos Buttler believes Joe Root can surpass Sachin Tendulkar's 15,921 Test runs if he stays fit. Root, with 13,409 runs, focuses on playing well over chasing records.
Jos Buttler has weighed in on whether Joe Root can beat Sachin Tendulkar's 12-year-old record of 15,921 Test runs, saying that it was 'quite attainable' if he can remain fit. Buttler explained that Root was not only hungry for runs, but he was also not focused on 'hunting down' the record, which allowed him to be not distracted.
Root jumped from fifth to second in the most recent Test against India at Old Trafford and now has 13,409 runs. A CricViz estimate said that if he can maintain the pace of the last two years, it would take him around 29 Tests to go past Tendulkar, which could be anything between two to three years. Root is still 34 and only needs to contend with depleting reflexes (no signs of that have been visible yet) to realistically get there.
'He's not hunting down Sachin Tendulkar because that's definitely not the way he plays his cricket or how he sees it," Buttler said in a podcast with former teammate, Stuart Broad. 'But he is number two on an incredibly elite list, with what seems like—if he stays fit—quite an attainable kind of thing, which is absolutely mind-blowing. He has got 21 hundreds since COVID. He is obviously in the form of his life and it is awesome to watch," he added.
Broad asked him if he has ever thought that Root won't be able to do it?
Buttler replied: 'It might just be a bit more in his favour."
'Hunger is never an issue I see with Root. He isn't going to wake up in 2-3 years and think he doesn't have the love for batting or playing for England. He has just been playing so well, even during that period when England won one game in 17 and he was captain. But he just doesn't see it like that at all. Which I think is the great thing about him. He just loves playing and winning matches. So it's going to be pretty cool to watch whether he stays at No. 2 or scales that Everest and goes to No. 1," he added.

Mohammed Siraj emerged as India's hero in their narrow six-run victory against England during a thrilling fifth Test. England, chasing a target of 374, were bowled out for 367, with fast bowler Siraj taking 5-104, including a spectacular 3-9 spell on the final morning. This victory marks India's narrowest winning margin in a Test match. England, resuming on 339-6, lost four wickets for 28 runs on the final morning of a dramatic series. Outstanding paceman Siraj, the leading bowler on either side in this series, struck twice to remove Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton, reducing England to 354-8, 20 runs shy of victory. When injured England last man Chris Woakes came in to bat with his left arm strapped due to a shoulder injury, England still needed 17 runs for victory. Gus Atkinson hit a six off Siraj, bringing the target down to single figures. But Siraj sealed a superb series by bowling Atkinson (17), knocking over the batsman's off stump and sparking jubilant scenes among the India team and their supporters in south London. India were without Jasprit Bumrah at the Oval, having decided to play the world's top-ranked Test bowler in only three games of the five-match series. Bumrah achieved the top ranking during last week's drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford. Siraj, who played throughout the series, ended with 23 wickets at 32.43. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Both Bowlers Were Exceptional': England Pacer Lauds Mohammed Siraj-Prasidh Krishna

Last Updated: Stuart Broad has lauded Indian bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna for their joint effort in India's thrilling six-wicket victory over England. Former England pacer Stuart Broad has said that the Indian bowlers came in afresh and knew that one lengthy spell could do it for their team, as he lauded the joint effort from Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, which took India to a thrilling six-wicket win in the fifth Test at the Oval. The Indians began their comeback when they reduced England from 301/3 to 337/6 in their run chase of 374 in the final session on Day 4. In a conversation with Sky Sports after the game, Broad said that while many believed the early stumps on Day 4 disturbed India's momentum, it was the opposite from a bowler's perspective. 'The Indian bowlers freshened up and knew they had one big spell to get this. And when you are bowling for a Test win, there is no more energy inside your body than that and both bowlers were exceptional in what they did," Broad said. 'It had everything and was a fitting finale to what has been one of the greatest Test series I've seen and I think a fair result," Broad added. 'When we were walking off the ground last night at the end of Day 4, a lot of the social media were saying England will be at a big advantage with the heavy roller. However, how I thought about it from a bowler's point of view was, ' I get a nice sleep and I'll be fresher to hit this pitch hard and get more out of it," Broad said. Siraj starred for India with a five-for in the second innings, including three wickets on the fifth day. Siraj was the standout performer, delivering one of his finest performances under pressure. He grabbed nine wickets in the fifth Test, which India won by six runs and finished the series with 23 wickets. The Test series turned out to be one of the most intensely fought and drama-filled showdowns in recent times. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
