Khalifa University researcher develops innovative coating for nuclear fuel safety

SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)Driven by the need to improve nuclear reactor safety, an Emirati researcher is focusing her efforts on developing accident-tolerant fuels (ATFs).PhD researcher Ghadeer Hegab Mohamed from the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department at Khalifa University of Science and Technology, under the supervision of Prof. Akram AlFantazi, is working on the development of special chromium coating for fuel rods.This coating helps the rods withstand extreme conditions during accidents, using advanced testing methods to ensure better protection and performance.Her project, titled "Systematic Fuel Performance Analysis of Accident Tolerant Fuels (Development of Cr-Coated Cladding and Evaluation of its Applicability)," is funded and conducted within the Emirates Nuclear Technology Centre (ENTC) at the University."Zircaloy-based cladding, which is widely used in pressurised water reactors, reacts with steam at high temperatures-producing dangerous levels of hydrogen and causing core damage during severe accidents," she said."The chromium-coated version offers a practical, near-term solution by increasing resistance to oxidation while still fitting within current manufacturing and licensing systems."To achieve this, she developed a new method to coat the inside and outside of the fuel rod casing with chromium, making it stronger and more resistant to damage during accidents. The team also added a middle layer to help the coating stick better and protect the rods more effectively at high temperatures."This single-step process uses environmentally friendly materials to create an even coating," she said.The chromium-coated cladding provides better resistance to high-temperature damage, gives more time to respond in emergencies, and stays strong under pressure, she noted, adding that "it works with current reactor designs, so there's no need for expensive system changes."To test the coating, she used both lab experiments and computer models.In the lab, her team used advanced imaging tools to closely examine the coating's surface and structure, making sure it was strong, even, and protective.They also carried out high-temperature tests to see how well the coating resists damage, along with trials to check how strongly it sticks to the fuel rod surface.Meanwhile, on the digital side, her team used computer tools to simulate how the fuel behaves in different conditions-like how it reacts inside the reactor, how heat and fluids move around it, and what might happen during an accident.The impact of this research could be transformative. "It can greatly enhance nuclear reactor safety by reducing hydrogen buildup, slowing down core damage during accidents, and enabling more efficient fuel use," she explained.Her team is continuing high-temperature tests to check oxidation resistance and how well the coating sticks. "We also plan to collaborate with international research reactors to test how the material performs under actual radiation. Our computer simulations will help confirm how it behaves inside a working reactor."

During the session, Al Qasimi explained various types of astrophotography, highlighting the differences between wide-field imaging — such as capturing the Milky Way and star trails —and deep-sky photography, which includes shooting nebulae, distant galaxies, and planets. He also addressed critical factors that influence image quality, including light pollution, moon phases, weather stability, and more. Al Qasimi affirmed that the workshop was an inspiring opportunity for dialogue and learning, as attendees showed great enthusiasm for exploring the artistic and scientific aspects of astrophotography—an art that combines visual beauty with technical precision and strengthens the human connection with the universe. He added: "Astrophotography is an effective visual tool to promote scientific awareness. It helps embed space sciences into the cultural memory of younger generations through direct and engaging visual experiences. I also commend the vital role played by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library in equipping the community with tools for knowledge and exploration, in line with the UAE's vision of building a knowledge-based economy driven by innovation and science." Yousef Al Qasimi addresses the gathering. Participants learned essential technical principles of astrophotography, including the ideal camera settings for capturing the Milky Way: shutter speeds between 10 to 30 seconds, focal lengths from 14 to 24mm, wide apertures (F2.8 – F3.5), and high ISO settings (1000–3200) to produce clear, detailed images in low-light environments. The workshop also covered necessary astrophotography equipment, such as wide-angle lenses and tripods for wide-field shots, and star trackers and telescopes for deep-sky imaging. Al Qasimi introduced free software like SEQUATOR, used for image stacking, detail enhancement, and noise reduction, to help produce high-quality photos of stars and galaxies. Additionally, the trainer showcased a variety of telescopes, cameras, and modern astronomical tools, explaining the features and uses of each for capturing planets, nebulae, and distant celestial objects. He clarified the differences between lenses and telescopes and offered guidance on selecting the most suitable gear based on location, environmental factors, and desired subject. The workshop emphasized astrophotography as a skill that blends art with science, fostering analytical thinking, precision, and attention to detail. It also opens up new, non-traditional career and creative paths for youth, inspiring them to engage with science and space through a compelling visual perspective. This workshop aligns with Mohammed Bin Rashid Library's vision of empowering future generations and equipping them with tools to explore new horizons — such as astrophotography — in line with UAE Vision 2071 to build a knowledge-based, forward-thinking society and promote scientific curiosity.

The bot is a smart automated system designed to monitor permafrost, which is the frozen layer of soil found in some of the coldest regions on Earth. Reem's understanding in the field of climate is evident as she ranked among the top 30 winners in UNICEF's Net Zero Hero competition across the UAE, for her efforts in projects related to permafrost, plastic use, and waste recycling. 'Winning Net Zero Hero was more than just an award. It was a turning point that taught me age doesn't matter in making a difference,' she said, adding, 'Sustainability Practices are important and I try to implement them in my daily life as well as to raise awareness within our communities.' Passion in lit and tech The eighth-grader's victory against tens of thousands of students in the Arab Reading Challenge shaped her approach to problem-solving. Where others see separate interests, Reem sees connections between her passions in literature and technology. 'This was truly one of the most memorable moments in my life,' she told Khaleej Times about her reading triumph. 'Our country always pushed us to dream big, and I felt a deep sense of pride to even represent it in the finals." Reem juggles different practices at once and is always out for more. 'Balancing is not about doing everything at once; it's doing the right thing at the right time. My key is being organised and doing the work I am passionate about, so it counts as free time,' she explained. Family support fuels her achievements. 'My biggest support system was my family. They believed in my capabilities from my first step, encouraged me to dream big, and cheered me in each competition,' she shared. Speaking to Aletihad , Maryam Al Menhali, Laboratory Specialist at the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory in Al Ain, outlined the cultural, environmental, and scientific weight of the centre's work. 'The participation of the Date Palm Development Research Unit, part of the Khalifa Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in the Liwa Date Festival clearly reflects the centre's mission to preserve the cultural and strategic value of the palm tree by linking heritage with innovation,' she said.'Palm trees have not only been an agricultural crop; they have also been a pillar of Emirati identity and have played a pivotal role in food and environmental stability for centuries.'Al Menhali believes that the date festival is not merely a symbolic event, it is an active platform for community outreach and knowledge exchange.'We affirm our commitment to developing biological propagation techniques and improving local varieties through advanced scientific research, including safe genetic modification, genome analysis and micropropagation,' she added.'This aligns with the UAE's vision of achieving sustainable food security and enhancing agricultural sovereignty through advanced biological solutions, without compromising the cultural heritage represented by the palm tree.'The centre uses a combination of biotechnologies to enhance date palm productivity and resilience, with a focus on disease resistance and climate adaptation.'We rely on six key technologies,' Al Menhali include tissue culture for disease-free propagation, genome sequencing to identify stress-resilient genes, CRISPR gene editing, transcriptomics and proteomics for molecular understanding, microbiome engineering for soil-plant health, and high-throughput phenotyping to evaluate performance across environmental comprehensive approach ensures that while the trees' cultural significance is honoured, they are also equipped to face the challenges of changing climate and food security Menhali also outlined how KCGEB integrates artificial intelligence, data analytics and precision agriculture to improve cultivation.'We use machine learning to detect early signs of disease from drone and satellite imagery, allowing us to intervene before visible symptoms appear. Smart IoT sensors track soil health, while predictive algorithms optimise irrigation schedules. Farmers also receive real-time advice via smart applications linked to our cloud systems,' she technologies enable proactive decision-making, helping farmers reduce water use, prevent crop loss, and boost palm health; marking a shift from traditional to data-driven efforts extend beyond productivity. Al Menhali highlighted the centre's national seed bank and genetic mapping initiatives.'We are sequencing the entire genomes of local and wild date palm varieties using advanced genomics. These maps inform our breeding programmes and help reduce genetic bottlenecks. We also store seeds in tightly controlled environments to preserve biodiversity,' she centre conducts field surveys to locate and document rare Emirati date varieties, and preserves them both genetically and culturally.'This is not just science, it is a national investment in our agricultural and environmental future,' Al Menhali centre is leading efforts to promote water-saving and environmentally-friendly farming.'We develop varieties that are drought- and salinity-tolerant, use smart irrigation systems to reduce water waste, and recycle treated water safely,' Al Menhali noted.'We also replace chemical fertilisers with biofertilisers and promote organic and conservation agriculture.'These include integrated agricultural systems that combine farming with solar power and waste recycling, establishing model farms as examples for national dissemination.'Our goal is to shift agriculture in the UAE from a consumer model to a sustainable, regenerative one.'Through its initiatives, the centre places strong emphasis on education and knowledge sharing, aiming to inspire the next generation of Emirati agricultural innovators.'We run workshops and create apps that deliver best practices to farmers while engaging youth in environmental agriculture. Cultural heritage must evolve, and part of that evolution is empowering people with knowledge.' In summary, Al Menhali said the mission is clear: protect the past, innovate for the future, and cultivate a sustainable legacy for generations to come.
