‘ANC member behind death threats on Knysna mayor'

THE death threats levelled against Knysna Mayor Thando Matika in a voice note circulated in a WhatsApp group could be linked to the upcoming by-election in ward 8, following the resignation of former mayor, Aubrey Tsengwa.
This is according to the ANC Victor Molosi Region in Knysna, as police confirmed they have since launched an investigation into a case of intimidation.
"The matter is investigated by our Provincial Detectives Serious and Violent Crime Investigations who have already identified a suspect. Upon completion of the investigation, the docket will be submitted to the Senior Public Prosecutor to decide whether prosecution will be instituted or not. No one has been arrested yet," said police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie.
According to the ANCYL Victor Molosi Region, 'disturbing' voice notes had been circulating where a 'rogue individual' makes death threats against Matika's life.
'We are aware of organised attempts by a few to destabilise Knysna. These malicious efforts aim to undermine the progress and harmony achieved by the diligent work of the Mayor and his mayoral committee, which includes dedicated leaders of the ANCYL like Deputy Regional Convener Kay Andrews. We call on the authorities to thoroughly investigate these attempts and hold accountable those who seek to disrupt the peace and prosperity of Knysna. We take these threats with the utmost seriousness.
'Notably, in recent years, a Councillor was gunned down in front of his house in Knysna. These threats must not be taken lightly. We must learn to tolerate each other even at the height of disagreements. The criminal making these threats must be arrested and should expose the others he is referring to in the circulating voice notes,' the ANC in the region said.
Approached for further comment on the matter, spokesperson Moyisi Magalela said the person behind the voice note is a member but not part of leadership structures.
'We got to learn there are people who know him, who could identify him on the voice note he was sending. In the voice note he is talking about the mayor and his leadership style. It looks like he said there was an attempt before. Overall, he is saying the new mayor has big shoes to fill and questioning his leadership style.
"Because of the past experience of Victor Molosi we told the mayor he must not take these things lightly. In that light he understands things are not normal and went to the police,' Magalela said.

He said they intended to talk to the structures about the incident to calm things down ahead of the by-election and urged law enforcement agencies to act swiftly.
The municipality said they had met with police on the issue and a new date for a budget Integrated Development Plan meeting, which was scheduled to be addressed by Matika, was yet to be scheduled.
'The Knysna Municipality takes the recent security concerns very seriously. While we cannot discuss specific security protocols in the media, we can confirm that the Municipality has engaged with SAPS on this matter. The threats are deeply concerning as they not only endanger public representatives but also undermine Council's constitutional mandate and the public's right to participate in democratic processes such as the IDP and budget consultations. A new meeting date for Ward 8 must still be finalised.

The DA has rejected higher education minister Buti Manamela's sector education and training authority (Seta) takeover, claiming he has appointed corruption-tainted individuals. Alleged murder mastermind Katiso 'KT' Molefe loses bid for release on bail
Katiso 'KT' Molefe, the alleged mastermind behind the murder of DJ Sumbody and three other people, was denied bail by the Alexandra magistrate's court on Wednesday. According to magistrate Renier Boshoff, there are a number of concerning aspects not only linking Molefe to the crimes but also regarding his circle of influence and capabilities. He said it appeared the state's case against him and other accused — who had abandoned their bail applications — was 'extremely strong'. 'The counts are of a serious nature and can increase the risk to abscond. His application for bail is refused,' said Boshoff. Molefe faces four counts of murder and four of conspiracy to commit murder over the killings of DJ Sumbody (Oupa Sefoka), who was with his bodyguards Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza when they were shot in Woodmead, Johannesburg, in November 2022. DJ Vintos, whose real name was Hector Buthelezi, also died in a hail of bullets outside a nightclub in Orlando East, Soweto, in March 2022. In his ruling, the magistrate said Molefe, who claims to have been born and raised in South Africa, had once left the country using a false Lesotho passport and a fake name. 'This raises concerns about what he is capable of,' said Boshoff. Speaking outside court, NPA Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the prosecution team believed the ruling was in the interests of justice, as there was a risk Molefe could interfere with investigations if released from custody. 'The evidence against the accused is overwhelming. We showed in court how he is linked to the offences, including WhatsApp messages between him and the other accused who are believed to be the gunmen,' said Mjonondwane. According to the NPA, there are several dockets under investigation against the men, including two in Sandton, two in Pretoria and one in Vereeniging. The prosecution is working on an application to centralise these cases so that one team can handle them. 'Today's [Wednesday] ruling affirms the criminal justice system is there to protect society and we welcome it,' Mjonondwane said. Molefe and his co-accused, Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela and Musa Kekana, are expected back in court on September 18.

Manamela under fire for another round of ‘unfit' appointments to Seta boards
ANC higher education ministers have been accused of using Setas to create jobs for their comrades. The new minister of higher education and training, Buti Manamela, is under fire for yet another round of controversial appointments to the Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) boards. This comes after Manamela announced several officials with corruption allegations on their backs as administrators for three Seta's that have been struggling with governance failures and the lack of financial oversight. These administrators will oversee the Services Seta, Construction Seta (Ceta), and Local Government Seta (LGSETA). Manamela said these administrators have a clear mandate to restore integrity, enforce consequence management and ensure that students and workers are not prejudiced. DA rejects Seta appointments However, DA portfolio committee member for higher education, Karabo Khakhau, said these appointments do not inspire confidence. 'These appointees are unfit – implicated in corruption, mismanagement, fraud in previous government jobs – or have proved themselves useless in the Seta space already,' said Khakhau. She said the DA has written a letter to Manamela requesting that he should withdraw these appointments. 'Will Minister Manamela fail his first test of ANC cadre deployment, or will he go down the same path as Nobuhle Nkabane? The facts against Manamela speak for themselves,' she said. How on earth can this be addressed by corruption, fraud, mismanagement implicated ANC cadres? 'We demand that Manamela stop this, and appoint independent non-political persons free of corruption implications to deliver an effective turnaround of the system,' she said. Background Manamela was appointed minister of higher education in July after Nobuhle Nkabane resigned from her position. Nkabane got into trouble with the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training for lying to parliament about Seta board appointments. She was also accused of appointing ANC cadres to these boards. The entire process was reversed after numerous complaints from opposition parties. Meanwhile, a study has found that while the Setas are created to solve the country's skills shortage problem and contribute to the employability of South Africans, they instead eat R20 billion per year in tax money, and reaching only 0.6% of the workforce. The study found that the Setas have proven to be inefficient and ineffective, according to research by the Bureau for Economic Research (BER). The BER proposes to resolve the skills problem by restructuring and moving towards a more effective approach that prioritises skills for growth.
